The Five: Shows we miss the most

by Ryan j Budke, posted Dec 28th 2005 4:24PM
According to a poll taken in England by the Home Media Networks, Star Trek tops a list of shows that are most missed by the viewers. There's been a couple of different iterations of Star Trek and it didn't really specify which one, so they've got a leg up. Head on across the pond to the BBC's site and check out the entire list. After reading this list however, it got me thinking about my most missed shows, and I'm not talking about the "painfully short" shows that we've talked about numerous times in the past here at TV Squad, just overall shows that I miss the most. So here we go, the shows that I miss the most.

Dead Like Me
This aired on Showtime for only two seasons, but it's still one of the greatest premium cable dramas I've ever seen. It followed a girl, who had recently died, while she learned the ropes as a grim reaper. It was hilarious yet heart-wrenching at the same time and featured a cast that you could tell was absolutely in love with the characters they played.

Angel
Even though Buffy made the UK's list, I never really got into it. I really really dug Angel though. It had a good run of five seasons, but they were just starting to hit their prime then, and it's a shame that the WB cancelled it then. This is still the my last great show to have a great finale in my opinion; the entire gang going out Butch and Sundance style. I'll still pop the DVD in every couple of weeks to watch just that episode.

Quantum Leap
Literally filled with endless possiblities, this show could have gone on forever. Following the adventures of Dr. Sam Beckett as he time leapt from body to body throughout history, "hoping each time that his next leap, will be the leap home". A great drama that was actually of enough caliber to be entertaining for the entire family. I could probably describe every scene in the episode where he leapt into the Kennedy assassination; that was one of the greatest hours of TV for me.

Seinfeld
Whether they knew it at the time or not, one of the greatest benefits of being "a show about nothing", was that the episodes are still relevant today. It's a shame that no one in the cast has gone onto big success in their own series since it ended. I would love to hear what Jerry and the gang thought of some of the problems and idiocracies in the world today, though.

The A-Team
The action-packed-guilty-pleasure shows have been too far and in between since the ending of this masterpiece in 1987. There's always talk of a movie just around the corner, and with it premiering on the Sleuth cable channel next week, I can still get my fix. Nothing makes me happier than when a plan comes together.

So those are my five most missed shows, but I want to know what yours are. Do you miss hanging out with some Friends here on this 3rd Rock from the Sun? Or perhaps a Perfect Stranger gave you some candy that made you sick, and now you need to see Doogie Howser MD (or Dr. Cosby). Let me know what you think.

I'm with spongy. Futurama is the show I miss most, even with it being on Adult Swim most nights. Dead Like Me was a great show that went before its time (ironic, no?). I miss The Tick (the animated one, even though the live action one was pretty good too) a whole lot. I used to wake up to Talk Soup, and I'm glad The Soup has picked up the slack for it. Oh, and Mr. Show!

Mine:

Rockford Files -- Best PI show ever.

St. Elsewhere -- ER stole everything from it and never came close to beating it.

WKRP -- But I'd settle to see it on DVD.

Once & Again -- Difficult to watch at times, but always good.

Dick Ebersol-era SNL -- Yes, Lorne hates to acknowledge its existance, but there are more consistent laughs in this period than in any period Lorne has had, including the original cast, which was funny, but overrated with time.

All of Joss's shows: Buffy, Angel and Firefly.

Farscape. And Wonderfalls. From years back, Remington Steele.

And from this season, Kitchen Confidential. Stupid FOX network.

And next year I'll be missing Alias...

Freaks and Geeks!

I was so incredibly sad when I finally watched the last episode in the box set. I want more!

Let's see:

Enterprise: I know, but the fourth season - the one where Berman and Braga were pretty much exiled from the production except for the last episode (which stank) was up there with some of the best Trek ever. The show would probably have survived if the first three seasons were as good as the last one.

DS9: My favourite Trek of all. I wouldn't have objected to seeing what happened after Sisko and Odo left. I want to know what happened to Colonel Kira.

Obvious subjects of network interference that should have stayed on TV: Firefly, and Crusade and Reunion. Reunion is controversial but it should at least have been allowed to finish out the season so we can see the end of the story.

Eyes was a wonderful show that proved the point that the TV execs don't have a clue.

As for shows I miss:

SeaQuest (which is marathoning this week on SciFi)
Adventures of Briscoe County Jr. - can't say enough about this one...

And for guilty pleasure from when I was a kid that has turned into an embarassment when I downloaded an episode recently and rewatched it(and realized how lame it really was):

Automan

I miss Sports Night (I could have really seen that show going several more seasons), and I'll also say I miss the Sorkin-era West Wing desperately.

Also: Eyes, Lucky, Kate and Allie, Magnum, P.I., and Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Can't say that I miss Seinfeld. Not only are the reruns on 35 times a day, the show kinda burned out at the end. Nine years was enough.

I'm quickly being won over to the British way of thinking: short, high-quality seasons and shows that usually call it quits before the decline starts. As much as I love "Spaced", I think the premise would have started to feel old and repetitive had it gone to a third series. Plus, the little addendum at the end of "Skip to the End" (in the box set) leaves things so perfectly; I want to always remember the characters like that.

That said, it killed me that the American remake of "Touching Evil" wasn't given more of a chance by USA Network, and if "The League of Gentlemen" made another series (either Royston Vasey or something else), I'd be all over that in a heartbeat!

Ok, I am going to go out on a limb here since it ended when it should have but I miss The Pretender.

Quantum Leap
Murphy Brown (before Elden left)
Columbo - though I can get a fix on the Biography channel
Mash
