Will Bo Bice be the next Clay Aiken?

by Kim Voynar, posted Dec 28th 2005 9:07AM

Bo Bice is having a busy time of it lately. He had a new baby boy last month, he had major surgery and then ended up back in the hospital with complications from the surgery, and on top of that, our own Anna Johns thinks he's one cool cat. As if that weren't enough for one guy,  his new album "The Real Thing" is being released, and the singer is said to be "very excited" about it. As you no doubt know, Bice came in second to American Idol winner Carrie Underwood (who, by the way, was just named Oklahoman of the Year), and there has been much speculation about whether Bice will pull a "Clay Aiken". Aiken, who placed second behind Ruben Studdard in Season Two of Idol, has far surpassed Studdard in album sales and fan base.

Not that Ruben was any slouch--his first album beat out Kelly Clarkson's debut, and his second album went to the top of the gospel charts--but Aiken still outsold him, and his fan club, the Claymates, are almost as obsessive as Harry Potter fans. Actually, perhaps more so -- if you really want to wear your heart on your, er, sleeve, you can actually buy a Clay Aiken thong.

I don't know if there's a Bo Bice thong out there, but he does have a fan base called The Bice Squad. Bice definitely seems poised on the edge of major success, and it's been a long time coming for the sexy singer, who's been performing since he was sixteen. When we talked to Bo's bandmates from Sugar Money, John Cooper and Shane Sexton, at the end of American Idol last season, Shane talked about Bo's upcoming solo effort, and how Bo would try to maintain control and artistic integrity. Bice says in the MSNBC story that he had "quite a bit of control" and "a lot of input" on his new album, so let's hope the end result rocks. Oh, and if you see a Bo Bice thong for sale out there, drop me a line...

Bo,Carrie and Clay are all talented people who deserve more respect than they usually get from the "rabid" fans of the other fan bases. Bo, Carrie and Clay just want an opportunity to use their God given talent to make their music. Fans who "don't get it" cause all the trouble on these blogs. Your favorite is not elevated just because you don't have the good manners not to say offensive things about other's favorites. It's just your opinion and like noses we all have them. Poor Carrie has to deal with the fact that some of her teen fanbase can't behave when given an opportunuity to express their thoughts. Bo, Carrie, Clay may God bless you and give you the career you desire and deserve.

Bo and Clay in my opinion have alot in common...both appear to be comfortable in their own skin...not manufactured. I like both for their individual "unique" style. I can't realy compare their singing abilities cause they are polar opposits in this area. I just know that I am a loyal fan of both and I have seen both live and would see them again and again. Clay has an edge over Bo for success outside of the music industry cause of his humanitarian activities which will probably keep his name in the media even without the release of a new album. Bo on the other hand is a multi-talented artist who I think has the potential of a long career in the music industry...I guess only time will tell. I wish them both success and look forward to buying their future albums...in the mean time Bo's album is really good so go buy it now!

I can see why so may feel they have to compare Bo to Clay...as I see it they have alot in common. First and and for foremost they are "Real" non-manufactured personas. By this I mean they appear to be

Look -- I am a Clay fan. I think Clay is an amazing entertainer and vocalist. But, comparing Clay and Bo is totally ridiculous. They are completely different. Bo has a lot more knowledge about the industry, and about how he wants his album to sound. Let's face it -- Measure Of a Man (Clay's first CD) was terrible. There was not one song on there that had a snowball's chance in hell of getting radio play. I mean, Clay could sing the alphabet and it would sound good, but I think that he was really given nothing to work with, and he didn't know any better for lack of experience.

Although Bo's album is not what I expected, I think there are a few songs on there that could get played on the radio, and that is key. I also think that Bo had a lot more do to with his album than Clay did. The songs on The Real Thing are definitely marketable, and if Bo gets no airplay I blame RCA for not doing their job and promoting him properly.

I wish all the best for Bo and his family.
Considering Carrie's album, a month old, sold more copies than Bice's in his debut week shows clearly he is closer to Diana DeGarmo than Clay Aiken.
Actually, in terms of real numbers, Bo is closer to FANTASIA than anyone else from AI in FIRST WEEK sales of their debut albums.
Here's how they stack up:
1. Clay Aiken - 613,000
2. Ruben Studdard - 416,000

(gap of over 100,000 copies)

3. Carrie Underwood====314,000
4. Kelly Clarkson ======297,000

(gap of ca. 50,000 copies)

5. Fantasia Barrino =====239,000
6. Bo Bice ========= 227,000

(gap of well over 150,000 copies)

Diana DeGarmo ==== ca. 50,000 IIRC
Justin Guarini ===== " " "

So, yeah, Bo's first week sales were closer To Diana DeGarmo's than to Clay's -- But so were Carrie's, Fantasia's, and Kelly's. :-)

Kim, I wish your article's TITLE reflected its CONTENT better!

Nowhere in the blog do I read any comparison of Bo and Clay in terms of fan base, talent, sales, career expectations, What you are asking, Kim, is whether Bo may "pull a Clay Aiken" -- namely, OUTSELL OR OUTLAST THE OFFICIAL "WINNER" despite being "RUNNER-UP."

In other words, your blog is comparing BO to CARRIE -- or maybe even to Ruben, Fantasia, and Kelly -- by asking whether Bo can parlay his AI exposure into a highly successful career (maybe bigger than official "Idols"), even though he didn't "win." :-D

So I think reader comments comparing Clay's fans, talent, sales, etc., to Bo's are really off-topic here.

As much as I like Bo, I know Bo is not going to be the next Clay Aiken. I doubt we will ever see another Clay emerge. Clay was in a unique spot in time. AI was fresh, fans were "fanatical", and CDs still were selling in large numbers. And Clay's talent filled a big void in many of our lives. Bo should be successful, and a strong seller, but he's not taking the world by storm like Clay did.

I have to admit, I have written up great reviews for Bo's album all over the place but don't really think it is very good. I really feel like it will flop and he deserves it for such a terrible album.

Considering Carrie's album, a month old, sold more copies than Bice's in his debut week shows clearly he is closer to Diana DeGarmo than Clay Aiken. He has not even come close to beating her. Not only that, his 2nd week, he dropped 12 places and was the ONLY album in the entire TOP 20 that did post sales gains from the week before. Word of mouth is already killing this album along with bad reviews. This album will plummet down the charts in the next few weeks. Carrie has now proven she is a superstar. Bice has proven he is mediocre, at best.
