Does Jenna Elfman deserve another show?

Jenna Elfman in Courting AlexIf you've been watching CBS a lot lately (especially if you're watching football), you probably haven't been able to avoid the ads for Courting Alex, a new sitcom starring Jenna Elfman. You don't really learn anything about the show, as the ads only show Jenna dancing in hot pants and a bikini top, hair and make-up done up to the maximum. Then as the dance music blares and she wriggles around, Jenna stops and says, "Why am I dressed like this? I play a lawyer!" and she flirtingly walks off-screen.

Now, I like Jenna Elfman. She's funny and sexy in a way that's completely unthreatening. I even liked her last series, Dharma & Greg, because -- at least for the first few seasons -- her loopy Dharma played well against Thomas Gibson's uptight Greg. But, for some reason, the general public opinion about her has been decidedly mixed. Some people thought she was never funny. Others thought Jenna wasn't even good looking (I had seen descriptions like "gawky" and "flat-chested", and those were the nicer ones).

So Jenna's critics might be loading up the ammo for Courting Alex. They may have a live target, though; the fact that the promos don't show scenes from the pilot is a very, very bad sign. Also, the fact that the show has had three different names can't be a good thing, either.

So, let me ask the audience out there: Does Jenna deserve another shot? Let me know in the comments.

I think some people are put off by her Scientology thing but I think it's mostly because in her mind, she evinces she's really hot & sexy. It's one thing for someone like Cindy Drawford or Tyra Banks to act a little overtly sexy or to act like she knows you know she's driving you a little crazy ... but Jenna? She's not unattractive but she's no Cindy or Tyra no matter how hard she tries and frankly, the harder you try - the creepier it is. It's like she's making up for the fact she was probably skinny & gawkier in high school and now is definitely trying to get all 300 guys who turned her down or paid her no attention then to notice her now. And of course, ultimately, she's a tease since no one has seen her actually nude. There are plenty of other actresses who are equally making up for lost attention time from HS but at least, they are willing to take off all their clothes ... or of course, there is always the sad (for Jenna) possibility that no one has offered her more than scale to take off her clothes in a movie role.

Unlike a drama, a succesful sitcom requires that people like you as a personality (or failing that - as your character) in a playful sexy manner ... unless you are surrounded by dozens of other funny people, Kristie Alley on Cheers can be the annoying sexy woman because there were a dozen other characters we liked but Kristie Alley as the lead in Veronica's Closet was just annoying (never mind the weight gain). Maybe it's just a Scientology women thing - they get taught the overtly sexy thing (Kristie, Jenna, Juliette Lewis, the girl from JAG) but it's not a playful or honest sexy - more of desperation to gain attention ...

Quite frankly, I don't think we need anymore alien worshippers being given more airtime. Dharma & Greg was mildly amusing, but she looks like she has an eating disorder in the promos, and I'm not going to watch a show simply because she's on it.

ANYTHING with Jenna Elfman is going to be watched! She's hilarious, unique and sexy. I know the show will do very, very well.

If her character is anything like Dharma, the show will have three strikes against it, immediately. The first being the fact that it's a sitcom. The second being it's a mid-season replacement. The third being the fact that Dharma was too bubbly and perky. OK, so the third is a personal strike.

I didn't even know Dharma and Greg went off the air until I saw him on some new show. Criminal Minds, is it?

If they air it on Mondays or Thursdays, between 8 and 9, I'll give it a shot.

I'll give it a chance but the commercials have me worried. It's just odd that they'd rather promote it with her slithering about than you a taste of the show. It makes me wonder if that means that there aren't even enough funny scenes to produce a real commercial.

I really liked Dharma & Greg (and yes the first few seasons were better).

I absolutely LOVE Jenna. She could read the phone book and I'd be there to listen. (and watch) But even critically speaking I thought Dharma & Greg was hilarious, (which is why it was on for so many years) and I think her new show shows promise too. After all how many different scenarios can sitcom writers come up with that isn't common everyday life to somebody out there. (you can't please everyone)
I know I'll be watching and TiVoing. (and maybe VHSing)
It will easily be better than the show its replacing, (a funny family of doctors?) and with Jenna it's bound to be a "hoot"!

Sign me up, I've been waiting to see Jenna return to a sitcom. Go rent "Keeping the Faith", or watch Lifetime's "Obsessed" or "Touched" and you may agree...

Counting the days, and my TiVo has been cleared for Jenna already.....

Going only off of what I have read about the show, since they haven't really shown us anything yet, it seems to me that this is Dharma and Greg with the gender rolls reversed. Now Jenna Elfman is the follows the rules does what she is supposed to lawyer who falls for, guessing here, the unconventional free spirit in an unlikely opposites attract coupling. I'll give it a shot, but my expectations are low.
