Rolling with Adult Swim

by Adam Finley, posted Jan 2nd 2006 10:47AM
12 oz mouseNobody ever really talks about it, but there's more than a few people out there who insists that in order to enjoy Adult Swim, you must be really, really high. Of course, I would never advocate drug use of any sort, despite the book I wrote seven years ago titled, "Drugs are Awesome and Everyone Should Do Them." Adult Swim also appears to be anti-drugs, as they air anti-drug spots during shows. These are the same shows that more or less beg the viewer to take a few hits off the bong their roommate created using a hollowed-out Mr. T action figure. The question: Is Adult Swim that cool uncle who lets you spark up a doobie whenever you feel like it, or is it more like an authority figure that tries to appear cool but is actually out to harsh your buzz with occasional reminders of why doing drugs is bad? I'm going to work exhaustively to unravel this conspiracy, or maybe I'll just go make myself a sandwich. The important thing is to keep busy, that's what my therapist tells me.

In all events it's a tv station under Cartoon Network, which I believed is owned by the all encompassing AOL Time Warner, so even if they wanted to hint at drug taking, which I am totally sure they have, um, i think, then they "socially" have to take an anti drug stance either way. For a funnier version of what I said, refer to post #1

I have also never taken drugs and have found a lot of Adult Swim shows to be extremely funny. Weird humor, if done well, can be hilarious without being high.

Except for 12oz. Mouse. You not only need to be high to enjoy it but borderline retarded. What is Adult Swim's obsession with that show, anyway?

I have never taken drugs in my life (Heck, a shot of Nitquil keeps me loopy for three days) but I do like some of the Adult Swim shows. I never understood ATHF, but I do like to watch 'Harvey Birdman, Attorney-at-Law' and, when it comes on, 'Sealab 2021'. Of course, I watch 'Futurama' and 'Family Guy' as well.

I've honestly never used drugs before, and I may be out of Adult Swim's demographic (I'm 28 years old), but I do find some of the Adult Swim shows, especially ATHF, very funny. I even own a few of the ATHF DVDs. But then again, I do have a weird sense of humor.

See, the thing with stoner humor is that, to enjoy it, you have to be really high or sleep-deprived. By airing everything late-night, you no longer have to be high to enjoy it!

I tried watching ATHF during the daytime once and "didn't get it". However, my late-night self seems to find it hilarious.

I think it may be the cool uncle who is fine with you smoking up, and may even partake in it with you, but has to act all sanctimonious and surprised when your dad shows up and asks what's going on.

That said, I've never been high while watching Adult Swim and I still find a lot of the shows hilarious. Even the stoner shows like ATHF and Perfect Hair Forever. Does that mean there's something wrong with me?
