Arrested Development: Save Our Bluths

by Ryan j Budke, posted Jan 3rd 2006 8:09PM
Ok, plain and simple, Fox just doesn't deserve this show. Regardless of what they "want to do with it", they don't deserve Arrested Development. Cancel it and let ABC or Showtime try something instead. I mean, what idiot at Fox decided to put the funniest episode of the season up against the Fiesta Bowl? This is just the latest example of their complete lack of respect for one of the funniest shows ever. There are only so many ways that you can screw up perfection, and I'm pretty sure Fox has now run the gamut. At the end of a good show's run, they always try and pull some kind of stunt to bring back some new viewers. Tonight's episode was like a Cliff's Notes version, and it was brilliant. On with the show!

The entertainers that are self-aware are always much, much more effective; David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, William Shatner, etc know their roles in the entertainment industry and who they are in life. Because of this, they end up playing a parody of themselves to often hilarious results. So when a show as stellar as Arrested Development is self-aware, well, it rarely gets much better. In last night's episode, they learned that The Bluth Company was in serious trouble, and the Home Builder's Organization (HBO) wasn't interested so it was time to go for Showtime. I mean, put on a show that is, a fundraiser.

Michael tried to track down Andy Richter to host the event, since one of Andy's quintuplets now taught George Michael at "Openings", an open-minded school. To save some money, both Gob and Lindsay took on jobs they later utilized for the charity dinner; Gob, a charming waiter, and Lindsay the cooking housewife. Granted, neither performed their roles well, but, hey, bully for them for trying. Andy however, sends one of his look-a-like siblings, so they are without a host for the event and the spotlight falls on Michael's speech about his father. Michael, armed with the knowledge that his father poisoned a few of his teachers decades earlier, is less than enthused though. He verbally tears both his family and company apart. Much to the shock of everyone though, everyone felt sorry for them, and started sending in checks left and right. The company is saved (we hope)!

Fantastic, unbelievable, brilliant, stellar.... I could go on and on, but I will never be able to say enough to describe this show. The way they made fun of all those "jumping the shark" moments (celebrity guest stars, 3-D episodes, live episodes) was unbelievable.  Stupid Fox, they could have advertised this episode as everyone of those things, but nope, they went and buried it with little to no notice. Come on Showtime give me some good news... Let me know what you think.

i agree with tee. showtime would be worth the extra expense, just for AD, and they have several other great shows. if they put it with Weeds, it'd be like their own little "must see tv." (hear that, network heads?). obviously, satan has started running things at fox, and he's turning fox into a hellish void of bull**** programming. kinda reminds me of freaks and geeks, but at least AD got two extra seasons. oh yeah, almost forgot- prison break? you are not oz! they should pull that done-to-death garbage, instead.

If Fox did an AD for this show where all the actors were just being hilarious for one minute, people would watch. They don't even need to be in character; they should just be funny and talk about all the awards and acclaim they have gotten, and then talk about how they are being cancelled. They just need to do it during American Idol.
Maybe they could put on a half hour special with clips from the show, hosted by the cast, just to make people feel bad.
I know it will not happen, because people at Fox stupid. If no one picks up the show though, there is still hope. Remember what happened to Family Guy?

Here in the U.K. the show wasaired by BBC2 and they made a hash of scheduling and advertising too. A.D. could be HUGE over here. In the U.S. you're notb the only ons with Foxwit schedulers!

Winkler did jump a shark on A.D., it's in season 2 when they catch the shark that bit off the flipper of the sea lion that bit off Buster's hand. On the dock, as he decides to leave, he jumps the shark. It's very subtle, but intentional.

I just wrote Showtime offering to subscribe if they pick up AD.... maybe if enough people write them they'll see the marketing potential in this brilliant show.

I totally agree that AD would fit right in on Comedy Central, and the time slot after the daily show would be just perfect. Come on! Comedy Central? ABC? SHOWTIME? Anybody? Give me some good news! I'm so sick of watching crap. Ashton Kutcher hiding Wilmer Valderama's car wasn't even funny the first time he did it. If sokmeone would actually promote this show, I think it could be the next Seinfeld. And do you know what Fox will say? I've made a huge mistake!

Seriously, what is wrong with Fox? I didn't even know AD had come back and I missed the first couple episodes. They have done no promoting for this show. Zero. Zilch. None. In an era when TV is practically unwatchable, AD was a funny and original show. It almost seems like FOX wants to fail. Replacing AD with Skating With the Stars? Seriously?! Are you kidding me?! I hope ABC picks up AD and everyone watches it instead of FOX'S reality show crap. AD and the OC are the only shows on FOX that don't induce vomiting. FOX SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It wasn't on this Monday and I've been hearing rumors that the one the week before was the last episode. Is it really over?? God, the only show on television that's actually worth watching, and they're going to blow it.
