NASCAR is everywhere in 2007

by Adam Finley, posted Jan 8th 2006 9:34AM
I admire NASCAR fans. It's not because I'm a fan myself, though I have always enjoyed watching my little brother race stock cars, but because it takes a lot of devotion and dedication to try and remember just when the hell all the races are being aired. I would think that having races spread out over three different networks (ESPN/ABC, TNT, and FOX) would test the patience of even the most diehard NASCAR viewer. This begins in 2007, and did I forget to mention the SPEED Channel? Yeah, they're in on it, too. Here's to you, NASCAR watcher, and the numerous mental breakdowns you've no doubt had trying to keep track of all this.

And as you can tell, NBC isn't in the picture anymore with NASCAR.

Shame, really. ABC and ESPN couldn't cover auto racing even if their life depended on it. Indy 500s, commentator-wise, are worse than they use to be and the IRL races are just total crap.

And as much as I hate to admit it, Fox is pretty decent with their coverage of NASCAR. They don't have to split the time with as many other things during the first half of the season as other networks do in the second half of the season.

I can take ABC@TNT,ESPN but NBC is the pits .They should stay with golf and swimming and forget the other sports. With racing you getfive minutes race and seven minutes commercial. Goodby NBC.

It's easy to remember, races are Sunday morning afternoon, except on those few occasions when they are Saturday night, but you know about that because you also know that during the season you just turn on Speed anytime and that's when NASCAR is on. The speed channel has whored itself out to NASCAR so much it's a little ridiculous.

I don't have a problem with the races airing on the different networks. I can consult my television viewing guide. Whan annoys me about it is the changes in teams that cover the races. I would have much preferred that NASCAR use the new contract to take control of the broadcast personnell. With the current FOX/NBC/TNT setup there is a big dropoff halfway through the season when they switch networks, and broadcast teams. And if that article is correct in the prediction that ABC/ESPN is going to bring Dr. Jerry Punch in for their coverage, there will be another dropoff when they switch to ABC too.

For those unitiated to the sport, all you need to know is that you root for the #24 Dupont Monte Carlo, and hope for blown motors and cut tires for the #8 Budweiser. The rest takes care of itself. :D
