SNL schedules good hosts, music

by Anna Johns, posted Jan 9th 2006 8:06PM
Saturday Night Live has lined up some pretty impressive talent to host the show this month. I'm sure the first host, Scarlett Johansson, will boost the ratings. Her appearance, on January 14th, coincides with the release of the first of two Woody Allen movies that she stars in. She seems like a gutsy gal, so hopefully the SNL writers can come up with some bold sketches for her. The band Death Cab for Cutie is scheduled to perform the same night. And on January 21 is Peter Sarsgaard, who has had supporting roles in Jarhead, Flightplan, Kinsey, The Skeleton Key, and was terrific in Zach Braff's Garden State. I can't find a whole lot about Peter's background on the internet-- I was wondering whether he had any experience in improv or stand-up comedy, but I can't tell. And, I'm not sure what his appearance coincides with since IMDB lists his last flick as Jarhead, which doesn't come out on DVD until March. The musical guest pairing up with Sarsgaard is The Strokes. Wouldn't it be nice if these actors could get some good sketches on SNL?

Peter actually started the sketch comedy club at my school, Washington University in St. Louis. It's still around 10 years later, so he's actually started in improv comedy!

peter sarsgaard's movie 'flightplan' comes out on DVD on tuesday, it also took me awhile to figure out why he was on the show. also, to my own knowledge he doesn't have any experience w/ improv and he actually doesn't do that much comedy.

A nickel...Sweet. I shall retire in Honduras and summer in Vietnam with my newfound wealth. Like a king I shall live.

I think Scarlett will be a great host. It'll be interesting to see what kinds of skits they throw in her direction. Any chance of Bill Murray making a guest appearance? I know Lost in Translation is old news, but it would still be sorta cool.

Do you guys ever proofread? The actress' name is Scarlett Johansson, not Johanssen. Is it that tough to use IMDB?

As for the sketches, don't expect miracles. The writing is awful and witless. Until they purge that staff, we will continue to get banal sketches that will neither offend nor entertain.

There was a rather long article/interview with Sarsgaard in the New York Times magazine a few months ago. The cover/theme of that week was "Hollywood Goes To War." I think he did a lot of theatre, but I don't remember if it said anything about improv.
