The Shield's "beginning of the end"

by Keith McDuffee, posted Jan 10th 2006 3:35PM
the shield season fiveThe Shield resumes tonight on F/X at 10 PM ET, and we've heard the good news and bad news about this fifth season of the series.

The good: Instead of the usual 13-15 episodes for this show, we'll be treated to a full 21 episodes. There's also a great guest star appearing in at least the first half of the season, Forest Whitaker, playing an internal affairs officer trying to take down the Strike Team. The writers and producers are taking a risky route for this season by revisiting a four-season old crime that's barely been mentioned since season one: the shooting death of Det. Crowley. Remember, I believe only Vic and Shane know what really happened that night.

The bad: The tagline being used for this season is "the beginning of the end," which some are speculating means this will be the last season of the series. The fact that this is an extended season also seems to support that assumption. Also, with the revisiting of the Det. Crowley murder from season one, the writers and producers may be alienating newcomers to the show, which might turn off those who'd entered the series late in the game.

In any case, this is a top ten show in my eyes, one of the finest that cable has put forth within the past decade. If you are a latecomer to the show, I highly recommend grabbing the DVD sets and see what you've been missing. You won't be disappointed.

Check out the preview video over on AOL for tonight's episode.

I hope to goodness this is it. More series need to go out on a high, having a real ending instead of petering out over a decade. Especially with DVDs, it makes it all like a giant, great movie you can rewatch.

Two good examples are The Office and Space: Above and Beyond. And while SAAB's end wasn't what they wanted, at least they ended it.

The alternative is 10 seasons of episodes that potentially decline into the quality of, say, a movie like Highlander 2, or even worse, Star Wars. Where by the end of it you wish it had never happened.

Don't get too excited about the 21 episodes. I've heard they already decided to split season 5 into two short seasons, with the second half airing next fall.
