Invasion: Us or Them

Sheriff Tom UnderlayDespite lots of the mediocre reviews this show has received from disgruntled "fans", I still like it. In fact, it gets better with every episode. Each installment has added just a bit more than the last one and the episode from a few nights ago was huge. The "you know what" has hit the fan and it seems Sheriff Tom has finally started to enact whatever plan he has in the works. It seems like he's reaching the point where he either knows precisely what's happened to him and he's embracing it or whatever is inside him is so powerful that he truly has no control. Either way, I'm terrified of his condescendingly "nice" attitude and humungous forehead. I mean, look at that thing.

Russel finally sucks it up and shows Mariel the skeleton that he and Dave found. She doesn't believe that it could actually be Tom's because if it is, then what the hell has she been sleeping next to every night? Mariel gets all indignant and confronts Tom about it. He takes her to the swamp (or as they call it, "the 'Glades") and he explains that on the night of his plane crash he saw the same lights that appeared on the night of the hurricane. So he brought Mariel to see them (she doesn't remember). While Tom won't come out and say it, it sure sounds like he "helped" Mariel into the water so she could get a closer look. Wisely, she doesn't believe a word of his fake "I tried to stop it" rhetoric and she leaves him. He screams at her and it's now clear that those who have been taken possess a great deal of rage under certain conditions.

Earlier in the episode, the church group almost beat the husband of another survivor to death. No one even attempted to stop it besides Mariel. Oh right, later on? She kisses Russel after she realizes that whatever happened to Tom is happening to her too.

Meanwhile, Larkin still has Jesse and Rose up north at some hotel. Jesse meets a girl who's obviously had a visit from the orange light monster. But Jesse gets his swerve on and takes a bath with her. Come to find out, she drowned three of her sorority sisters and has been on the run since.

Lewis is still recovering from cutting his new arm off. He stays at Tom's place, but after he realizes that he's strayed from God he gets freaked out and leaves. The Sheriff isn't too pleased with this and we know, because he unlocks the door that never gets unlocked. You know, the one they keep showing that's covered in padlocks? Larkin drops the kids off at Tom's and he kidnaps them. Mariel finds a note from him. Who knows where he took them. But the door? It's been locked again so whatever he needed from that room, he got it. Something tells me that next week, we're gonna see a whole new Tom. Anyone have any ideas on what he needs the kids for? Maybe as leverage to get Mariel to give in and join him?

The show is good, but I keep thinking that they really need to start picking up the pace a bit. I keep watching hopeing for something... I just can't make sense of it yet...

Interesting how the thread of this story in some way paralles that of BSG.
Both have a new intelligent life taking human form.
The new "life" seeks to replace the old dominant life form, humans. But in so doing it is actually beginning to integrate the 2 species while fighting for survival.

Glad to see some love for Invasion at TVSquad... thought I was going to get beat up like the dude at the church group when I said I liked it before the Lost chat Wed. night. This was the best episode of the show so far, and anyone who says it's slow or sucks can go bite it. This was one of the best all-around openings of a TV show I've seen in a long time. It was long and packed with stuff. I loved it.

I was just recently thinking of a (less plausible) angle for the sheriff that might be a nice twist (Fichtner, btw, is a suberb actor - he plays that creepiness and might-know-more-but-maybe-doesn't-but-probably-does) so well). Anyway, I was thinking - maybe he DOES fully realize what's going on and truly HAS been trying to protect Muriel. If he knows what's going on and is trying to STOP it, he could have organized the whole survivors group thing to get "them" all in one place. The "thing we were talking about" he mentions on the phone could be the motions to kick it into high gear and start kicking some alien ass. Remember, he was super gung-ho on the quarantine - maybe he wanted to stop it from spreading even more.

Not sure if I like that more than the other two possibilities (he's a scared "them" trying to keep things in control and has no idea what's going on or he's a "them" overlord trying to facilitate things).

Finally, does anyone else think that Jesse was 'turned' by sleeping with that older chick (statutory anyone? I don't think he's supposed to be 18+)? I mean, when they flashed to the morning, he was UNDER the water when he woke up. I think he was breathing under there and just didn't quite realize it. She seems to like going around sleeping with guys Species-style, so maybe her whole speech about "us and them" was about trying to turn normal people into 'invaded'. Either way, that little bit of story is not going to go away, even if just for the fact that it proves there's at least ONE invaded person wandering around who's not living in the immediate hurricane area. End of super-long post.

I still think he doesn't fully know what has happened to him and is keeping the kids either in a desperate attempt to keep the family together or to "change" them by taking them to the lake.
