Martha Stewart's daughter fixated on horses

by Anna Johns, posted Jan 13th 2006 12:27PM
Martha Stewart's daughter, Alexis, is on a mission to get horse-drawn carriages out of New York City. She recently wrote a letter to Mayor Michael Bloomberg to ban the attractions. Stewart is a member of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), a group that is very upset over a recent collision between a vehicle and a horse-drawn carriage. The carriage driver was seriously injured in the crash, as was the horse, which was euthanized. Stewart contends that horses are forced to work long hours in unpleasant weather, on hard pavement, and breathe in polluted air from all the cars on the streets. She also says they happen to be a danger to pedestrians and others who use the streets and sidewalks of New York. Operators of horse-drawn carriages argue that the horses are treated well and that the horse-car crash on January 2nd was a fluke.

First of all there are no Garbage Trucks on Mackinac Island. The horses on the island are very well taken care of. They only work 5 hours a day and get every other day off to rest. There are brakes on the carriage's. The horses are checked over by a vet all the time. But of course if you really did your research you would know all of this. My tip to you is to do more research next time before you start up about how mackinac island horses are mistreated. And if you go to mackinac island to do research then take your own bags and walk to your hotel if the horses are that mistreated.

Now that I think of it I would rather ride around in a carriage pulled by PETA extremists than pulled by horses.

The horses are safer in New York.

Well since there are only like 2 vehicles on the island, (A Garbage Truck and A Fire Truck) I think horses are okay there, but they'd prefer you to use bikes, preferably tandem.
