Numb3rs: Double Down
As was mentioned a few weeks ago, professional poker player Annie Duke had signed on to guest star in this episode, which I'm sure you've
gathered revolves around playing poker. Too bad she was only in it for about two minutes as a blackjack dealer. And
unless you were looking for her, you probably wouldn't have noticed since we saw her hands more than her face. What a
letdown. Fortunately, this episode was really good and it had a twist that I actually fell for. After taking the house for quite a large sum of cash, this young Russian guy with terrible facial hair gets shot in the parking lot of the casino. Don, Colby, and David arrive on the scene and find notebooks in his SUV filled with card counting equations as well as a student ID. He was only 19 and the crappy goatee along with his horrible clothing choice was all a disguise.
After reviewing the security tapes, it becomes clear that the kid was working with two others to count cards and beat the house. But Charlie analyzes their cash flow and becomes convinced that they're being backed by someone and more importantly, they were also laundering money. In the meantime, another member of the group is shot at a bus depot and one of the clerks identifies a local high school math teacher as the person who bought the dead college student's bus ticket. He comes clean to Don about teaching the kids how to count cards but it takes some investigation to find out that he worked for the company that manufactured the automatic card shuffling machines for casinos. This teacher wrote the algorithm that operated the machine. Using that, the three students knew what cards were coming next.
So who was killing them then? Two were dead and one was still missing. The math teacher (who also knew Larry. Turns out they tried to win big at poker back in the day, but Larry walked away from it. Really cool back story) also admitted that the three guys got busted by the casino owner. To pay off the debt he had them launder his drug money. So he seems like the perfect match for who's doing the killings. Then he turns up dead. The killer was actually the third student and Colby and David stopped him right before he shot the high school math teacher.
This was just an all-around great episode that involved all the characters to some degree. The highlights were when Charlie, Amita, and Larry went gambling to try and get in the mindset of the students. Even better was Charlie's little science experiment. Did you that if you drop about a dozen mints (LifeSavers or Altoids I assume) into an open two-liter of cola, then the whole bottle erupts like a geyser? There's a good chance I'm going to make a mess in my kitchen later on today.
