Gilmore Girls: Just Like Gwen And Gavin
I seem to learn
something new every time I watch Gilmore Girls. Did you know that Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale found out
that Gavin
had a kid he never knew about? I didn't have a clue, but now I know, thanks to Amy Sherman-Palladino and her
knowledge of pop culture minutiae. After Lorelai accidentally finds out about the existence of Luke's long-lost
daughter April -- she runs into April at the diner, happily loading the salt and pepper shakers and figuring out
experiments on how to keep the salt from clumping -- Rory uses Gwen and Gavin as a means to keep her mother from
freaking out. Oh, and she also took the opportunity to take a quick swipe at the pair's singing ability, but that's
another matter...(It was a good aside: "They're people. You're people. I mean, you don't sing and neither does Luke. But really, neither can Gwen and Gavin, but they're still together.")
How'd Luke get himself in this pickle? Well, he goes to visit April in the park, thinking that a smart Rory-esque 12-year-old wants to play in the snow on a 40-degree day. Um, no. April doesn't mind hanging out at the diner though, likes it actually (oh, she's an odd one, that April), so they agree that she'll show up there the next day. Luke gets all nervous and tries to cancel later, only to be upbraided by April's mom Anna; it was his choice to have contact so he can't start backing out on his commitments.
So April's coming to Stars Hollow. Since Lorelai's going to be busy hosting a group of creepy maple syrup sippers at the Dragonfly and setting up a Doggie Swami booth at the Winter Festival (Taylor called an emergency 3 AM meeting about the festival -- he was videoconferenced in from Maine -- and the entire town showed up! Do towns like this even exist?), she won't be making it to the diner when April's there. But Lorelai leaves the inn to escape the syrup drinkers, and runs into April at the diner.
Meanwhile, in Roryville, she's still trying to fend off the olive branches from Logan. Flowers. More flowers. Even more flowers. He even buys the services of the Yale coffee cart to follow her around for the day. No dice. At the same time, Paris is running roughshod over the staff of the Yale Daily News, and the staff is about to, in their terms, "Howell Raines her." They meet to discuss their plans, keeping Rory out of the loop, thinking that she's too close to Paris. But when Rory accidentally interrupts the meeting at the local pub (coffee cart following closely behind), they clue her in. When she tries to warn Paris, who has assigned the staff numbers so she doesn't have to waste time remembering their names, Paris turns right around and deftly clamps down harder on the staff while throwing Rory under the bus at the same time. Smooth. Now they hate Rory, too. Can the palace coup be far behind?
Oh, and did I mention that Logan isn't giving up? He even goes to Lorelai, hat in hand, seeking advice. Lorelai, bless her heart, agrees, admiring Logan for his pluck even though he screwed up her daughter's life. He goes back to Rory's apartment with a dozen Krispy Kremes and a note from her mom. She reads the note, doesn't tell him what's in it, and reluctantly agrees to dinner.
Some other loose plotlines: Zack gets jealous that Lane's hanging about with an "Asian George Clooney" and confronts Mrs. Kim at the festival, thinking she set them up. Lane says that the guy is her brother and Lane's uncle and, in yet another cool moment, says she won't stand in his way of getting her daughter back. Oh, and Taylor comes back from Maine and goes "undercover" to see how good a job Kirk is doing with the festival. How they had room for a "Stars Hollow is so quirky" plot in this eventful episode I have no idea, but it wasn't really all that necessary, even if the Winter Festival was a nice backdrop for the fun.
But back to Luke and Lorelai. She was upset that he waited two months to tell her about April. What else doesn't she know about him? But after hearing about Gwen and Gavin from Rory, Lorelai decides that though things are weird, they can work through it. Luke continues to apologize, and tells her that things are so overwhelming between April and the wedding, that he didn't have the chance to tell Lorelai. She starts to realize that something's not right and offers to postpone the June 3 nuptuals, which Luke agrees to with relief.
Uh oh. Lauren Graham does a great job in this scene, because a look comes over her face that tells you that, even though she offered the postponment, she's not happy that he accepted. Like I said, Uh oh. Stay tuned. Who gets the feeling that we're going to be seeing Christopher rear his head really soon? That guy's timing is uncanny...
