William Shatner sings and smokes and kinda dances

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 18th 2006 4:00PM

William Shatner - TransformedWow, two Shatner posts in the same day! This one, though, is...surreal.

We've all heard the stories of Shatner's renditions of "Rocket Man" and "Lucy in the Sky With Diamands." Some of us have even heard the songs. But this is the first time I've actually seen video of him performing. It's from the 1978 Science Fiction Film Awards show (yes). Shatner sits on a stool in the middle of a dimly lit stage, smoking a cigarette like he's never smoked one before, and sings "Rocket Man." It's a little long, but watch the whole thing. It's like an acid trip, and one of the greatest things I've seen in my life. Bernie Taupin himself introduces Shatner!

And to think he actually came out with a good album, with Ben Folds, just last year.

(And after you watch Shatner's, don't forget Stewie's!)

It's also the inspiration for a scene in Futurama, where Capt. Zapp Brannigan performs his stool-bound, smoky talk/sing of "Lola"...

yes he did Samuel, but for some reason the fine folks here at tvsquad do not seem to recognize great television and ignore the show.
