24: 11:00am - 12:00pm

In what is already the fifth (fifth!) hour of this season of 24, there were a few stress points that were definitely going to break. Audrey and Diane were bound to meet up with each other, given the proximity within the CTU premises, Spenser is getting the gasface from Chloe, and Mrs. Logan is bound to either break down or get herself in some trouble. Of course, I have Monday Night Quarterbacking going on and can point those things out, but they were all left hanging at the end of last week's fourth hour.

Frankly, I'm still flabbergasted at the casting of Sean Astin, and the waxing of Michelle and President Palmer. Leading into this week's recap, I figured to notice something that would catch me off guard or perhaps show something I needed to think more about. There wasn't too much big stuff, but after re-watching the first hour a few nights ago, I definitely see the concern that Palmer has on his face before commenting to his brother about being distracted because of his memoirs - clearly that's not all of it. Was he foretelling what was going to happen with the Russians and the treaty? Was he aware of the plot against him? So many questions!

And Chloe, with a tattoo! Jack leaves town for 18 months and the whole place comes crashing down!

Our pals the terrorists have made off with the nerve gas, a fact that Curtis and the CTU crew find out when they make it into the hangar and find a blown up hole in the ground, and a few dead rats. When the news makes its way to Logan, via Mike Novick, the plot unfolds, but isn't any clearer to us in the audience. It appears that the terrorists are looking to use the nerve gas to take out their frustrations on Russia, who has now managed to sign a treaty of some sort with the U.S. Let's see them roll that stuff down the tarmac at LAX.

Chloe and Spenser appear to be having friends with benefits problems, and even Edgar has found out about it. So much for that potential love connection. That's what you get for dating sleeping with your co-workers, Chloe! As it turns out, this problem works out in the end, because it leads Chloe to be suspicious of Spenser, and she finds that he was tracking Jack Bauer into the building. Additionally, he just happens to be the person who lets in an unexpected assassin to the CTU building, armed and dangerous. He most certainly looks like a bad guy.

All the while, Mrs. Logan is in hiding at the compound in Los Angeles, and Cummings has somehow finagled that she will be committed - and President Logan appears to be down with it. Her assistant is doing a decent job of stalling, and it works out in the end - as she manages to somehow escape the compound - or at least the building - through a window behind the shower curtain. W00t! Go Mrs. Logan!

But the best part, although it was somewhat weak, was Audrey's "confrontation" during an interview with Diane. She's clearly curious as to how "close" Jack was with her, and doesn't really get anywhere with that line of questioning. Diane is all friendly nicey nicey, and Audrey does nothing but stare her down. When her man rolls up outside the doors, she can't help but stare - so she glares at Diane, stares at Jack - and wants to have a little bit of alone time with him. He tries to explain herself, and she doesn't want to hear it. This most certainly look like a problem - and I'm not sure which woman is going to lose out.

CTU is always infiltrated by a spy.
The White House is always infiltrated.
Jack Bauer is always presumed guilty despite numerous occasions where he has saved the world.

can't they come up with an original plot line?

I hate to bad mouth a great show like 24, but its my thing.
i totally agree with Kip about CTUs incredible in-depth hiring policy that seemingly does not improve as time goes by.
Strangely enough, with a 24-hour scenario running, the first hour had Jack & his girlfriend sitting at the table having coffee. She gave a nice view of her wrist watch which was off by 6 hours or so.
With the show so time-based I was horrified to see them blow something like that right out of the gate.
I originally hated Chloe's character but now feel she IS the show.
All that ... the best hour of TV going right now

I agree about Sean Astin. I think it is an inspired casting choice...totally opposite of typecasting! Here you have a hardnosed, competant yet power trippy character, usually a show would cas a big, hard-assed looking guy, but instead they have this short, kinda pudgy guy with a baby face...yet with great acting chops, it make the charcter more real and less a stereotype...you know, more like real life!

I love this show...love some of the new characters this season. Love the first lady, Chloe, Edgar (who has gained some weight) and here's hoping Tony wakes up to become an important part of the season again. He's and Jack are the best buddy/compadre duo in TV history. The fact that they started off disliking each other back in season one makes it all the more special!

Why would you be "flabbergasted" at th casting of Sean Astin as Lynne McGill???? The man is an AMAZINGLY good actor, with the operative word being "actor". Sean is a good person in RL, a fine and honest and decent family man who spends his spare time involved in helping those less fortunate than himself. That is not, however, any reason to think he couldn't carry a role that is so totally different that his reality.

If you doubt his ability to be anything but good, I'd advise you to grab a copy of Deterrence and see him as the bigoted kid in the diner. Or possibly Where The Day Takes You, in which he rocks the screen as a drug addicted street kid. I think that might answer any qustions you might have left.

24 is the best written show on earth! Ok, I love Rome, but between that and 24 I would choose 24 as more annoying and Rome as the best quality. I think the brilliance of the show has to do with the casting director, whoever that is - I'm not bothering to find out right now. The president is perfect as someone with no spine, Cummings does a great job of appearing to be the guy with the real power, and the mousy guy who looks like he's constipated and should just quit is great also.

Now we come to Edgar, one word: Nepotism. The guy looks like he should be working for Tony Soprano as a second hand gopher. Seriously, how did a guy that incompetent looking/sounding get a job playing a computer guy on a government intelligence service? Does anyone have the answer?

This brings me to the neccessary teenager, what, no rebellion this time? Someone under twenty-five that doesn't intentionally mess everything up for Jack. I suppose they just decided to surprise us this time around.

I forgot about Chloe, beautiful casting, again. She plays the geek with no social skills to a "t."

I think this is the best season yet, but they are all great.

How come no one has mentioned that for the first time there is no drawn out "who is the mole?" plotline. Rather than draw anything out, it seems to get resolved pretty quick this year meaning that the writers will have to keep all the plots moving along to keep the pace.

P.S. Edgar has put on some more weight. Kim Raver looks a lot better than last season. I can't wait to see if Kim returns and if she finally gets what she's had coming for many seasons.

Assassins don't know details...just the "mark". Not to mention, you don't injure/interrogate an assassin...you kill him. It's kind of a "kill or be killed" scenario...you know...being an assassin and all. Just like Jack killed Palmer's assassin, cause he knew he'd kill Chloe if he got a chance.

This is the second time Cummings has tried to kill Jack. I can't wait until they meet. I'm sure Jack will do the deed personally.

I really hate President Logan. He has no spine, and I really can't tell if he's just preoccupied, or just stupid. Mike Novick seems to be the only decent guy in the administration. That's who the First Lady should have confided in. By the way...LOVE HER!!!

Prediction of the week: Diane's kid gave Jack up. Not sure how yet, but, he's just too grevious.

Spenser's internal work is such a rip off of an MI-5 episode over 2 years ago. Its jsut upsetting to see an original idea get ripped off by a marquee network show.

Here's my question: How come CTU has so many issues with people infiltrating it all the time? I know it makes for a cheaper budget but come on people This is the 4th time someone has gotten inside. What is up withthe dudes in purple? No internal security? This si suppossed to be a super top secret place but they jsut let him in because some intern, level 3 noob says its ok. BTW--wouldn't the assassin have been able to do more damage if he was able to put more incriminating evidence against Jack into the CTU main frames, alert the Chinese, something other than not shoot/smother/inject an air bubble/somethign into a defenseless Tony Almaeda?

Lastly, why teh scene with the kid who constantly apologizes. Cound;t they have written more interesting lines of dialog for this guy rather than to have him turn into a mindless Jar Jar of a character? Look at last season and the teenager played a HUGE role where they actually had someone behave neither stupid nor smarter than someone of their age.

Props to Sean Astin. He is good in this role as a paper pushing dork with a hero complex for Bauer.

We need more Curtis this season! The guy needs his own movie deal soon!

I was kind of surprised Jack killed the assasin. I thought he would like to ask him questions.

Best line of the night:

"After we take care of this terrorist thing, we'll sit down over a cup of chamomille tea and I'll tell you all of my secrets."
-Chloe to Edgar
