James Frey returning to Oprah -- UPDATE

by Anna Johns, posted Jan 26th 2006 10:26AM
James Frey is going to stick up for himself, again, but this time he'll do it on Oprah. Frey is the author of A Million Little Pieces, a memoir about drug and alcohol addiction that was chosen for Oprah's Book Club. The truthiness of the book were brought into question by The Smoking Gun on January 8. Smoking Gun folks claimed that Frey embellished some of his experiences and flat-out made up other ones. Since the investigation became public, all sorts of reviewers have jumped on the attack bandwagon and some say his experiences sound too text-book.

Frey is on Oprah today, along with his publisher, Nan Talese. Oprah is a terrific interviewer so I hope she throws him some tough questions, instead of blindly defending him.

My hate/hate relationship with Oprah turned into love/hate about a year or so ago. While she is a notorious ass kisser when it comes to celebrities and many of her "tragedy" episodes are overwrought, she does take people to task in interviews quite frequently and admits mistakes when she makes them. Glad to hear she reevaluated the Frey sitation. You go girl, indeed!

As of this posting I heard on the radio that Oprah has made a statement where she apologized for sticking up for Frey when she called up Larry King. SHe stated her judgement was impaired and that the truth does indeed matter.

Well, I was wrong. At least in the intro, Oprah has apologized to fans of her book club, claimed that she regrets her call to Larry King (saying her judgment was clouded), and claims "the truth matters."

That's as much humility (or honesty) as Oprah has ever displayed. Or likely ever will again.

"Oprah is a terrific interviewer."
Was this posted from "The Twilight Zone?"
Oprah is an ass-kisser who makes Kelly Ripa look like Mike Wallace.
The show, I'm sure, will be a disgusting love-fest.
