Project Runway: The Inspiration Competition

by Lacy Hall, posted Jan 26th 2006 9:57AM
tarahI think that this week's theme for the competition was the most ambiguous one to date. Designers were given a digital camera and told to hit the streets of New York for a hour and take pictures of things that inspire them. Then they were to take their most inspiring photograph and turn it into the most amazing design ever. Talk about having a lot to work with. The designers have no excuse to screw this one up. The sky is the limit.

I just feel bad that Diana has already been eliminated. Holy crap, she could have gone nuts on this one! I can just imagine her designing some sort of dress that transforms (via magnets, of course) into a fully functioning taxi cab, complete with foreign cabbie. Ahhh, the possibilities. But alas, Diana was already eliminated.

But Zulema was not and she started drama right off the bat by not sticking with her original model, Rachael. And instead decides to have a model walk-off between three of the models. The designers snicker in disgust. In the end, Zulema steals Tarah right from under Nick. And he is pissed! Apparently, Nick does not find inspiration from photographs or elements on the street. He finds his elements from beautiful sexy bitches, and he wants his model back! I couldn't help but feel sorry for Rachael. Nobody wanted the poor girl. But her walk is pretty weak and she is pretty boring. How did Tim describe her? As a marshmallow with Gumby legs. Ouch! (Seriously, click on the links of the two models and I think you'll understand as to why nobody wanted Rachael and why Tarah is such a hot commodity. Sex sells, baby.)

Designers had $100 and only one night to finish their designs, and Tim started the day off with a little "pep talk" to the designers. Basically, he addressed them one by one and told them that if they didn't up their game, they would be out. He told Santino, of course, that he needed to down his game to stay in the competition. I love Tim. The only thing I love more than Tim is Santino's impression of Tim. (DESIGNERS, I'm really gonna need you to rock the Kasbah.) Ha ha ha. That impression was dead on. It's nice to see that Santino can make people laugh with something other than his wacky ass designs.

But Santino was decidedly tame this week. Santino used graffiti as his inspiration and designed a flowy dress out of beautiful multi-color fabric (the same that had been chosen last year...oops). My only problem with this garment was that it had the same complicated, bodice-type halter that EVERY one of Santino's designs seem to possess. Why does Santino hate boobies? He must hate them to want to cover them up with such a ridiculously complicated design. Breasts are one of the best parts of a woman's body. Why cover them up?

Daniel scooped up his second win with a tweed skirt and silk organza top that was inspired by an orchid in the Michael Kors boutique. At first, I thought the top was a little too balloony, but it was for the runway and everything is always exaggerated. I really liked the design though. I thought it looked elegant and sexy, but mostly I just liked that Daniel was getting creative.

Andrae was the only one that really came close to Daniel and I was actually shocked that Andrae didn't win this one. I think that Daniel was surprised too. Andrae designed a stunning and elegant dress that was ready for the red carpet. His inspiration was dirty street water that seemed to shimmer in the sunlight. He executed the concept beautifully by creating a garment out of silky grayish fabric that had sequence up through the middle. The dress was simple, but beautiful, and I like how it looked good at any angle. I really think that Andrae should have taken this win.

Nick had trouble this week because he spent too much time pouting over his lost model, Tarah. I know she's a pretty girl Nick, but you're gonna blow it with all that sobbing. Daniel tried to give Nick a little pep talk about staying focused and it sorta worked, but by the time Nick got re-focused there just wasn't enough time to create anything spectacular. Nick used some handkerchief or something as inspiration for this lackluster design. Then, during judging, he spun some sort of wild story about being inspired by Paris Hilton on a Greek vacation with her (now ex) boyfriend. The judges weren't buying it. Nick, Paris Hilton's boyfriend as your inspiration? She's with a different man every week. That "inspiration" was soooooo two minutes ago.

Chloe's dress was so-so. While I think it was pretty and definitely something I would wear I wasn't impressed by it. Her inspiration was a skyscraper. But frankly, I don't think it looked like that at all. I just think she strayed too much from the concept.

Kara, on the other hand, interpreted her concept too literally. She used her inspiration (no trespassing signs) to create this boring number, a black halter dress with yellow "do not cross" tape across the waist. Booooring. Tim warned her that she was being too literal and during the judging Michael Kors said the same thing. I sort of think that she should have been eliminated this week if it wasn't for Zulema.

Zulema's dress was not good. It looked like something I would have sewn in 7th grade Home Ec class. It looked like it was about to fall apart. She had taken a picture of an African woman in traditional garb as inspiration. But wait. Can you use a dress as an inspiration for another dress? I don't think so. And she used her time poorly. She literally had to sew the dress onto her model when she arrived in the morning. Poor Tarah just kept looking over at Nick with a tear in her eye. Her eyes screamed, "I want to be with you, Nick! With you!" But she was with Zulema and with Zulema out, Tarah might be out soon too. Poor girl. It's just not fair.

Side Note- How long is it going to be before they have a Heidi Klum-inspired maternity wear competition? It seems like a wasted opportunity if they don't.

The "Inspiration" episode was hilarious!

The show begins with Zulema requesting a model "walk-off" and that was devastatingly humorous--even more funny than when they had Robert from PR 1 dressed up as a mailman (an inside joke that you'd only know the humor behind if you had seen the PR 1 episode where they have to design uniforms for the USPS).

After Zulema made that shocking request, everyone in the background is thinking, "Oh no, she did'nt!"

That was comical! Zulema should win an Oscar for that!

If that weren't hilarious enough, Tim Gunn tells Daniel V. not to be "seduced by the Santino effect" & that Nick's new model, has the body-type of a marshmallow, can't walk and has flexible legs like that of Gumby!

Tim Gunn is becoming more hilarious.

Just when you think all the comedic effects are over, then Nick has a fit because Zulema chose his model. Wake up, this is a competition and Zulema had every right to change models whether Nick liked it, or not!She made the right decision because she didn't do it out of malice, she did it because she was the best walker, which can either make or break the design.

Just when you didn't think the level of immaturity could rise any higher...it did! Everyone is eating at the table and refuses to barely enough look, much less, talk to Zulema.

What is this elementary school? As Nina Garcia always emphatically states, a little rather too much, (she needs to get a new line), "This is a competition."

Therefore, since "This is a compettiion," then Nick should have acted like an adult and accepted that Zulema chose his coveted model as her own.

He finally does, AFTER the fact!

Another immature episode took place with Nick's former model and Zulema's new model, I think her name was Tarah. Tarah was arguing that she didn't like Zulema's dress due to its color. Whether she likes the dress, or not is irrelevant. Since when does the model dictate to the designer what they are or not going to wear?

Clearly, the model should be cut from the competition. Heidi Klum should make a suprise visit to the sewing room and tell the model, either wear it or you're out! Of course she did wear it--what choice did she really have?

In the real world, I can assure you that most likely, if Zulema's model told the designer she was modeling for that she didn't like the color of the dress, then he/she would say, "You're the model. I'm the designer. You don't like it, you don't have to wear it, and you don't have to work for me. I can get someone to replace you."

In addition, I strongly disagreed with the judges' decision to cut Zulema from the competition. Especially, when Kara's dress lacked any real design. Granted Kara's symbolism and explanation was excellent, but Kara is not competing in a speech or essay contest discussing symbolism found in dress design. Kara's dress was ugly, and boring. It lacked any real sense of style and because of this, she was the better candidate to be eliminated versus Zulema.

Interestingly, I think Santino--consciously or unconsciously, as the designers pointed out, stole Austin's (PR 1) dress because it was uncannily similar--add to the fact that the dress was made with the same exact fabric as Austin's and you have an Austin-esque dress. More than likely, Santino made an honest mistake because in PR 1, the judges kept saying that Kara's designs resembled GUCCI, or Versace as they had put it, in other words, they actually resembled both, and she reassured them that her designs were also original. I think what happens, many times, is that people see certain designs, are inspired by them, and inadvertenly incorporate those designs into their own, which isn't good.

Furthermore, the judges are always saying that a dress doesn't look finished. Many times, the dresses are NOT completely finished because the designers are on a very limited time crunch. Of course the dress isn't always necessarily going to look finished. If the time contstraints were more realistic, then maybe they would have more time to create a finished look, but due to time being at a premium, they don't have a whole lot of time to design something.

Incidentally, does anyone know whether or not Nina Garcia has any experience at being a fashion designer? I know that she's the fashion designer at "Elle" magazine, but I firmly believe, unless, you're Betsey Johnson, Donna Karan, MIchael Kors, Ralph Lauren, etc., then you have no business telling others what works or doesn't work without the proper training and educational background of design.

Anyone can be a fashion critic, it doesn't make you an expert because you think something looks good. Case in point: many stylists choose dresses that end up on the "Worst Dress

This episode was hilarious and dramatic!

First, you have Zulema wanting a model "walk-off" and everyone in the background is thinking, "Oh no she did'nt" and it was hilarious!

If that weren't funny enough, you have that guy Nick having a fit because Zulema got "his" model.

Think about it: as Nina Garcia would say, "This is a competition." Nick had no right nor the others to ostracize Zulema for picking the model she thought would work for her to the best of her advantage. How old are these people? They acted like elementary school children with their childish behavior. "Well, she picked Nick's model, so I'm not eating with her. Let's all just ignore her!" All I can say is GROW UP!

If Nick didn't like it, then too bad! We're talking about a 38 year old acting like a 5 year old, who can't get his way, so he throws a verbal temper tantrum.

Furthermore, at the fitting, you have a model, Tarah, I think that was Zulema's new model & Nick's former model stating that she didn't like the dress.

Wake up, you're the model, NOT the designer, and I guess if you're the model, then you wear what the designer tells you what you're going to wear if you want to remain a model!

If that weren't hilarious enough, then you have Tim Gunn telling Daniel V. not to be "seduced by the Santino effect" and furthermore, Tim Gunn criticized Nick's new model as having the body-type of a marshmallow with flexible Gumy-like legs!

This was the most hilarious episode I have ever seen!

Oh, and let's not forget about the drama queen, Kara, who really should have been kicked off! Her dress was bland, boring, and while the story was creative, did not create a show-stopper in the dress' elements.

Kara should have been told good-bye and Zulema should have stayed.

It's rather disappointing that Zulema didn't win because I thought she would be one of the top three designers along with Santino and Nick.

Incindentally, I thought Chloe should have win because her dress was the most colorful.

Oh, and do you think that maybe Santino stole Austin (PR 1)'s design, or do you think that was merely a coincidence?

YOU DECIDE!

I was thinking the models could wear those fake maternity bellies. And I'm sure at some point, Santino would slip one on. It'd be kind of funny.

Yeah. Who would model the maternity dresses?

Heidi needs something though. She looks like a hot mess!

Was it just me, or was Jay being a meanie? It's like he thinks he's above it all. Maybe he is, but I was happy when Heidi reminded him that he used to be long winded too. I really hope he's not arrogant now b/c I loved him last season.

I tune in every week hoping to catch a glimpse of Andrae's priceless 'SHOCKED' look, and each week without fail, he gives me face. That, along with Santino's Tim imitations bring a smile to my face everytime!

Correction: Daniel has won THREE challenges so far. Remember Lingerie? Day to Night? and now this. He's adorable and smart. He knew how to stay in the competition and now hes ramping up the creativity. I hope he wins.
