Project Runway: The Inspiration Competition
I think that this week's theme for the competition
was the most ambiguous one to date. Designers were given a digital camera and told to hit the streets of New York for a
hour and take pictures of things that inspire them. Then they were to take their most inspiring photograph and turn it
into the most amazing design ever. Talk about having a lot to work with. The designers have no excuse to screw this one
up. The sky is the limit.I just feel bad that Diana has already been eliminated. Holy crap, she could have gone nuts on this one! I can just imagine her designing some sort of dress that transforms (via magnets, of course) into a fully functioning taxi cab, complete with foreign cabbie. Ahhh, the possibilities. But alas, Diana was already eliminated.
But Zulema was not and she started drama right off the bat by not sticking with her original model, Rachael. And instead decides to have a model walk-off between three of the models. The designers snicker in disgust. In the end, Zulema steals Tarah right from under Nick. And he is pissed! Apparently, Nick does not find inspiration from photographs or elements on the street. He finds his elements from beautiful sexy bitches, and he wants his model back! I couldn't help but feel sorry for Rachael. Nobody wanted the poor girl. But her walk is pretty weak and she is pretty boring. How did Tim describe her? As a marshmallow with Gumby legs. Ouch! (Seriously, click on the links of the two models and I think you'll understand as to why nobody wanted Rachael and why Tarah is such a hot commodity. Sex sells, baby.)
Designers had $100 and only one night to finish their designs, and Tim started the day off with a little "pep talk" to the designers. Basically, he addressed them one by one and told them that if they didn't up their game, they would be out. He told Santino, of course, that he needed to down his game to stay in the competition. I love Tim. The only thing I love more than Tim is Santino's impression of Tim. (DESIGNERS, I'm really gonna need you to rock the Kasbah.) Ha ha ha. That impression was dead on. It's nice to see that Santino can make people laugh with something other than his wacky ass designs.
But Santino was decidedly tame this week. Santino used graffiti as his inspiration and designed a flowy dress out of beautiful multi-color fabric (the same that had been chosen last year...oops). My only problem with this garment was that it had the same complicated, bodice-type halter that EVERY one of Santino's designs seem to possess. Why does Santino hate boobies? He must hate them to want to cover them up with such a ridiculously complicated design. Breasts are one of the best parts of a woman's body. Why cover them up?
Daniel scooped up his second win with a tweed skirt and silk organza top that was inspired by an orchid in the Michael Kors boutique. At first, I thought the top was a little too balloony, but it was for the runway and everything is always exaggerated. I really liked the design though. I thought it looked elegant and sexy, but mostly I just liked that Daniel was getting creative.
Andrae was the only one that really came close to Daniel and I was actually shocked that Andrae didn't win this one. I think that Daniel was surprised too. Andrae designed a stunning and elegant dress that was ready for the red carpet. His inspiration was dirty street water that seemed to shimmer in the sunlight. He executed the concept beautifully by creating a garment out of silky grayish fabric that had sequence up through the middle. The dress was simple, but beautiful, and I like how it looked good at any angle. I really think that Andrae should have taken this win.
Nick had trouble this week because he spent too much time pouting over his lost model, Tarah. I know she's a pretty girl Nick, but you're gonna blow it with all that sobbing. Daniel tried to give Nick a little pep talk about staying focused and it sorta worked, but by the time Nick got re-focused there just wasn't enough time to create anything spectacular. Nick used some handkerchief or something as inspiration for this lackluster design. Then, during judging, he spun some sort of wild story about being inspired by Paris Hilton on a Greek vacation with her (now ex) boyfriend. The judges weren't buying it. Nick, Paris Hilton's boyfriend as your inspiration? She's with a different man every week. That "inspiration" was soooooo two minutes ago.
Chloe's dress was so-so. While I think it was pretty and definitely something I would wear I wasn't impressed by it. Her inspiration was a skyscraper. But frankly, I don't think it looked like that at all. I just think she strayed too much from the concept.
Kara, on the other hand, interpreted her concept too literally. She used her inspiration (no trespassing signs) to create this boring number, a black halter dress with yellow "do not cross" tape across the waist. Booooring. Tim warned her that she was being too literal and during the judging Michael Kors said the same thing. I sort of think that she should have been eliminated this week if it wasn't for Zulema.
Zulema's dress was not good. It looked like something I would have sewn in 7th grade Home Ec class. It looked like it was about to fall apart. She had taken a picture of an African woman in traditional garb as inspiration. But wait. Can you use a dress as an inspiration for another dress? I don't think so. And she used her time poorly. She literally had to sew the dress onto her model when she arrived in the morning. Poor Tarah just kept looking over at Nick with a tear in her eye. Her eyes screamed, "I want to be with you, Nick! With you!" But she was with Zulema and with Zulema out, Tarah might be out soon too. Poor girl. It's just not fair.
Side Note- How long is it going to be before they have a Heidi Klum-inspired maternity wear competition? It seems like a wasted opportunity if they don't.
