Smallville: Reckoning

by Deidre Woollard, posted Jan 27th 2006 1:08PM
It's often a bit of a tease when a show promises a death. Ever since so long ago when Beverly Hills 90210 promised that "one of their own" would die and then killed off Silver's friend in the cowboy hat, I've learned not to expect too much. Last night's 100th episode had Clark whisking Lana off to his secret lair, confessing all and popping the question. She makes him wait for a little while and then agrees to marry him. All seems to be perfect, Mr. Kent wins the election and is now Senator Kent, Lana is welcomed into the Kent family and it's good feelings all around. But wait, we are only a half hour in. Lana's phone rings, Lex beckons and next we see Lana at the Luthor lair talking to Lex lit by firelight. He finds out she knows Clark's secret, she runs off and he tosses his drink into the fire. Next we see Lana driving away, calling Clark, Lex pulls up behind her, a rather rocking schoolbus with a distracted driver is crossing and intersection and bam, smash. No more Lana. Clark zooms in to see his broken and bloodied beloved. Of course we know Clark won't let this stand.

Anyone who has seen the Superman movies might assume Clark is going to spin the world backward to reverse time but this time it's more simple. He is given a crystal that he can use but he is warned that the balance must be maintained. Now I spend the rest of the episode wondering who is going to be taken instead. He choose to save Lana and finds himself at the start of yesterday. Lana tells him they need to take a break from each other. Clark confesses what he's done to Chloe who doesn't believe him at first but then agrees to tail Lana around for the day. Once again Lex calls, Lana goes running, a car chase ensues but this time Clark manages to save her by slowing down the bus.

Meanwhile at the Kent farm. Mr. Kent has a confrontation with Lionel Luthor. Mr. Kent vows to pay back the money that Lex's dad gave to his election but then is shown a picture of something incriminating. He crumples up the picture and punches Lionel. Afterwards, he staggers a bit. We see him walk away and Lionel's bloodied hand grab the crumpled photo. As Clark and Mrs. Kent arrive home, Jonathan Kent walks out into the driveway, looks lovingly at his family, and dies in their arms. Clark is understandably upset and fells as if he caused it but even after he explains everything, his mother forgives him. I'll miss seeing John Schneider (my favorite childhood crush) on this show but I think that the death of Mr. Kent might make Clark more of a man and polarize the tension between the Luthors and the Kents.

Definitely wasn't expecting this, mostly because I thought Mr. Kent didn't die of a heart attack until after Superman bit the dust (at the hands of Doomsday) in the comics. Lana should have died, although I don't really know her story in the comics, maybe she's important. I just thought it was strange they kill off Jonathan so early in his life. Maybe I should just accept some creative liberties. Anyone got an opinion on this paradox?

Enjoyed the 100th episode of Smallville and while understanding the need to kill off Jonathan Kents character because it is a big part of what finally turns Clark into Superman, his loss to the show will leave a definite void as his character was superb.
I wish i knew the email address to Smallvilles writers as there is an excellent opportunity here to have his character continue to contribute the show without bringing him back to life. Since he was connected to Jorel when he was given powers to bring Clark back from Metropolis and hence like Lionel Luther when he stole Clarks dead body from the Hospital it would be easy to have Jonathan recreated as an artificial intelligence and holographic presence in the Fortress.

Just a thought and logical progression and would give the show the continued presence of his character.

The episode of Jonathan Kent dying was a big dissapointment. John Schneider added strength, warmth and morals to a show that benefitted from his perfomances, as did his young audience.
Most of the friends that I have feel the same and we will miss him. Good Luck John, everything you do you do in style!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anon: Its not that we expected it as much as we were hoping for it (at least, speaking for myself).

To steal a term from Battlestar Galatica, this is a "reimagining" of the Superman mythos. While many of the characters are the same, not the same things will happen to them. Perry White meeting Clark while he's in high school, Clark meeting the Flash and Aquaman this early, the caves, Lois Lane this early, and my favorite departure (because she's far and away my favorite character) Chole Sullivan.

A mockery of the comics? Please.

Futhermore, if I know my comic history correctly (and I do not claim to be an expert), Clark's father's death differed in Pre/Post Crisis, and its the Donner film that really brought the concept that he died to the general public.

I'm just saying...

Have ppl been smoking pipe-weed or something? Why are ppl expecting to see Lana die? Even though the show has made a mockery of the Superman comics ... anyone who at least as an idea of Sups would know that it was Jonathan Kent that was meant to go. Why they waited till the 5th season for this to happen ... I am clueless. Hopefully, Clark will move on to Metropolis and fulfil his destiny as Superman ... and enuff of the filler episodes that add no substance to the mythos of Superman.

I am bored with Lana in her current incarnation (or, maybe not incarnation, but plot arc?).

I'm hoping that Lana's story becomes more intertwined with Lex now (as I feel it will) than with Clark. Clark/Lana hasn't been interesting since S2 (If, you know... Ever). Clark, IMHO has had more chemistry with Chloe (Though, I'm such a fan of Allison Mack, I think she'd have good chemistry with a tree if she wanted to) from day one.

And on a completely unrelated note, I like Lois. She seems to get bashed most everywhere, but I'm a fan. It might be a bit forced, but I'd take her and Clark's banter over Lana and Clark quasi-mooning over each other, which seemed to be what they did even after the got together.

I really do hope that Clark eventually tells Lana, or Lana finds out about his secret. The obstacles and tension is really getting old. I mean its been over four season already. How much longer do they expect the series to last? I think a full season of Lana knowing Clark's secret would be good for the ratings even if we all know they're never be hooked up permenantly. Afterall, Lois & Clark lasted 2 seasons after Lois found out, and the wedding episode arc was what ended up killing the show. Let's hope this bait & switch doesn't have as disasterous results like Lois & Clark's bait an' switch.

alright, first off, i LOVE lana lang!! sorry, but i do, i mean i knew at some point in the episode she was going to die because one of my not so nice freinds sent me a clip from the show...but, i also knew that he would do something to save her, i figured it would be more like, taking her body to the fortress of solitude and bringing her back, def. would have been a little more dramatic then just going and getting a crystal....

anyways, i would LOVE to see clark and lana together, without drama. we know this wont happen. maybe i just dont want her with lex because of my own michael rosenbaum crush, who knows?

moving on, i cried when mr kent died. i was like nooooooo...and my friend, who is not a smallville fan, sat there and laughed at me. i mean, i knew he would die, especially if they planned on following the comics story line. i just didnt want to see it happen though.

oh...and then the tease at the end where lana holds clarks hand only to walk off with lex???!?!?! what the heck? nooooo

and one more upsetting thing about this episode...from now on james blunt's "you're beautiful" is that much sadder now...

the end

Wow wow. Everyone's got good points above. I for one am just upset to see Pa Kent go...such a cool character who made up such a large part of what we love bout Smallville. Ultimately, it was a story arc event that HAD to happen either way i guess. Not quite sure if we're meant to think that Clark had to make a choice between Lois and his dad, or if Jonathon was going to die either way?? And yeh, some parts of the episode seemed a lil disjointed and rushed - woulda like to see a lil more time on Jonathon's death maybe. It is kinda humbling how Clark's character would give up being with Lana just to save her rather than risking her life for his happiness..honestly how many of us 'mere mortals' would do the same, huh...??
