Kelly Clarkson wins 2 Grammys and so do some other people

kelly clarkson grammyWhat a night for Kelly Clarkson! She cried when she beat out Gwen Stefani, Sheryl Crow, Mariah Carey, and Bonnie Raitt for best female pop performance for her very awesome Since U Been Gone rock hit. Less than an hour later, she nearly broke down as she sang Because of You. Later in the night, Kelly won her second grammy for best pop vocal album for Breakaway, an album that was very close to her heart. She wrote or co-wrote half the songs on the album and divorced her management company over control of the album. Neither of her acceptance speeches mentioned her win on American Idol. That's a tough call. She obviously wouldn't be where she is if it weren't for Idol, but at the same time, she legitimized herself as a true talent this year when she distanced herself from the competition.

Other winners:
  • Album of the Year: U2, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb;
  • Record of the Year: Green Day, Boulevard of Broken Dreams;
  • New Artist: John Legend;
  • Song of the Year: U2, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own;
  • Country Album: Alison Krauss and Union Station, Lonely Runs Both Ways;
  • Rap Album: Kanye West, Late Registration.
The complete list of winners is here.

I can't believe the press comments about Kelly Clarkson "forgetting to thank" American Idol. Quite to contrary, her success has made that show a big hit and a lot of people have benefitted financially from her hard work and talent. It is American Idol producers that should be doing the thanking.

Fans are fans, whether they bought a CD or called a toll-free number to vote. Kelly Clarkson doesn't owe American Idol a thank you, only her fans.

Besides, American Idol already got their thanks from Kelly -- in the money they made off of her talent and hard work.

Record of the year is like "song of the year", except for Song of the year goes to the writers of the lyrics, not the performer. Album of the year is for the best album. The album of the year usually has several great records.

It's always good to remember where you came from, as they say, but Kelly Clarkson's wins last night were because of her own work, not anything connected to AI. She deserves what she got. Also let's remember the premise of AI--that the public chooses the winner, not the judges or the producers. They just gave her a vehicle to show her stuff. The audience did the rest.

If she was still had ties with American Idol I don't think she would of won anything. Plus she doesn't owe them anything else, if she were a flop Idol wouldn't be the ratings hit that is now.
