The O.C.: The Heavy Lifting
The one thing that stinks about having an
exciting episode where someone dies at the end is that it's typically followed up by a semi-depressing episode where
everybody is in mourning. (Remember the Dawson's Creek episode after his dad died?) This episode of The
O.C. just happened to fall right before Valentine's Day. As Seth so sarcastically put it, "Death and
Valentine's Day -- what a combination."Although, this episode wasn't too much of a downer. Mostly because only Marissa really cared about Johnny dying (in her eyes). Chili was also bummed, and is now going by his real name, which he mumbled and I believe is Dennis(?). Johnny's mom decided that she didn't want to have a depressing funeral (no black, no minister, no body) and so they had a beautiful gathering of his friends at the beach, and then sent his surfboard out into the ocean. But what did they do with Johnny's body? Did they just leave it at the morgue? That was a little weird.
Truthfully, not much happened this episode. The O.C. is going on hiatus until March 9th and I think this was a set-up episode to prepare us for everything that is going to happen after the break. For example, Ryan and Marissa established several times during this episode that they aren't getting along so well anymore. Namely, Marissa didn't want to celebrate Valentine's Day with Ryan because she was still mourning Johnny. This, coincidentally, happens at the same time that a new female character (i.e. Ryan's new love interest) is being introduced, Johnny's cousin, Sadie. Sadie is sort of a free spirit (with an edge) who has already graduated from high school and is now traveling around the country, making and selling jewelry. She comes into town to help with Johnny's funeral and instead catches the eye of Ryan. I'm not sure if this is going to be a good love interest for Ryan or not. Even though, Marissa is an idiot and the writers have lost all real ability to communicate to us why Ryan and Marissa would be attracted to each other...the show just doesn't seem to work when they are apart.
Sadie also gave Marissa a necklace that Johnny asked her to make for Marissa for Valentine's Day. It was a chain with both their birthstones on it and an angel in the middle because "Marissa was his angel." Ahhhhhh. Sorta cheesy, but hey, it was the Valentine's Day/Funeral episode.
Meanwhile, Seth and Sandy Cohen were trying to prove their love to their respective Valentines and purchased each age-appropriate lingerie from Victoria's Secret. Of course, in what could only happen on television, they get the two bags mixed up. (Cue the screwball music-- Wa wa waaaaaaaa) And they actually give Summer and Kirsten the lingerie that was meant for the other one. Summer was the one more pissed about it and actually smacked Seth for giving her a lingerie set that included a see-through thong. Now, didn't Summer dress up like Wonder Woman in the first season? I doubt that she would get so offended by a see-through thong. In fact, I bet you that she has a see-through thong for every occasion, including the Chrismukah episode. Seth makes up with Summer by giving her a napkin with all the lies that he's told in the past few months, with the condition that if he lies again she can give it to his parents. Pretty good idea, but if I was his girlfriend, I'd still want something from Victoria's Secret too.
The other big set-up on this episode was the loss of Kaitlin, who went back to school after a very long (long) winter break. But Kaitlin, you just showed up? We were just starting to like you! Kaitlin decides to go back to school after her (pseudo)boyfriend Justin shows up giving her a teddy bear with a bow tied around it for Valentine's Day. Didn't they just joke the same gift on SNL, but with a teddy bear holding a heart? Isn't a teddy bear with a ribbon around it even lamer than the teddy bear holding a heart? Anyway, Kaitlin decides to go back to school, but I've got a feeling she'll be back.
...after March 9th, of course.
