Desperate Housewives: Silly People

We interrupt our regularly scheduled review by Sarah for one from me this week. I'm a regular watcher of the show, though I hope I don't disappoint.

This week's theme: unlikely friendships. This show has always done an amazing job of starting us off on a theme by the familiar narrator, wrapping the episode up with a short montage of those very themes affecting the people of Wysteria Lane. Some great stuff involving the overall "mystery" of the season, more Mike Delfino issues and the usual Susan bumblings.

Let's start with Susan and Edie. As we saw in previous episodes, she has something called a "wandering spleen." Because Susan doesn't have medical insurance, she's afraid she can't afford the surgery. She keeps referring to her spleen "slamming into" her heart, but to me it just sounds like she's so uninformed about the rare condition she has, one diagnosed by what seemed to be a rookie doctor, that you can't help but want to slap her.

Edie suggests to Susan that she get married to take on that person's health insurance, so she sets Susan up with a gay friend who's looking to get hitched to please his aging parents. Because the gay man's life partner completely hates the idea and leaves the drugstore-turned-chapel in disgust, the wedding's suddenly off. Later, Susan's ex-husband comes to the rescue, offering to even the scales between them by marrying her so she can get her surgery. "We won't tell Edie," he says. Yeah, she won't find out.

As for Mike, his father-in-law, who's been riding him over the death of his daughter, gets a "mysterious" note, informing him that he has a "grandchild". Why the heck didn't Felicia say "grandson?" So Mike's father-in-law sends one of his thugs to tell Mike to cough up the name of the grandchild. The father-in-law then tells Mike to bring the grandchild to him within two days. Oh, wait until he finds out who's been the daddy all this time.

Gabby and Carlos offer to take in a Chinese immigrant, who was found enslaved in a woman's home, making baked goods under lock and key. Long story short, Gabby and Carlos now have a live-in maid. I wonder how long that story's going to last. Could this be where Carlos takes Gabby up on her offer to make things even?

As far as the Scavos' story, I hate how shows will capitalize on the whole "hey, I was in a fraternity, too!" thing. Look, I was in a fraternity in college and had an awesome time there and met great people, but would I give another greek a break now that I'm out of college? Not on that fact alone, I can tell you that. Oh, and Lynette's raw bacon chowdown was pretty gross. I mean, it's at least edible material, but bacon is mostly pig fat. And she ate a pound of it in one sitting. Yeah, I think I need a bucket, too.

Bree finally confronts Betty Applewhite on what she learns from her locked up son, and Betty fesses up everything. This was one of the better scenes of the episodes, as we saw a definite and true connection between the two women, as they both have undergone ultimate sacrifice for their children. The difference is, Bree's son isn't mentally challenged.
