Here's why we're REALLY doing the TV Squad Live! Sketch Project

TV Squad Sketch projectEarlier this week, we introduced our comedy sketch project to you, giving you a very measured and careful explanation for why we're doing this: we love our readers, we think they're very funny, we want to utilize new wiki technology, etc., etc., etc.

All of this is true. But the real reason we decided to start this project is much simpler than that:

We think Saturday Night Live stinks.

This isn't news: just check out our reviews of this season's shows, and you can tell that we're really disappointed with what has been passing for comedy on that show this year. Scripts that stretch a weak premise for too long. Sketches that don't build to a comic climax. Too strong a reliance on pop culture that is only understandable to teenagers. It's just been painful to watch the show this year.

So, as we were sitting around our virtual teacher's lounge here at TVS discussing the show's dire straits, we started wondering if we and our readers could do any better.

Thus the grand experiment: can we, a group of mild-mannered bloggers and readers, utilize wiki technology to create a sketch that is at least as good, if not better, than anything that's currently airing on SNL? It's similar to when A.J. Jacobs let the users of Wikipedia edit an article about the site for Esquire, except that instead of putting up a finished article that's full of intentional mistakes, we will be creating the sketch from almost nothing.

So, TV Squad is throwing down the gauntlet to its readers. Send us your ideas! Let's make a sketch that will make SNL, MadTV, and all those other shows sit up and take notice! Who's with us?
