Grey's Anatomy: Yesterday

by Sarah Gilbert, posted Feb 20th 2006 2:10AM
deciding upon mcsteamyYesterday..ooh, doesn't seem so far away with tonight's Grey's Anatomy. Hard on the heels of an emotional, long-held-secret-revealing Desperate Housewives, I thought I would burst from the sheer amount of raw emotion thrown at us. It's all laid out, there on the table tonight, and, wow, we're really opening up old wounds (and I'm laying on the double entendre a little thick, hmm?).

I feel like a total heel for saying so, but McSteamy - a.k.a. Mark, Dr. Shepherd's best friend and wife's lover - he's totally hotter than Derek. I am so not surprised that Addison fell for him! And his introduction, just one of a series of witty yet emotionally charged scenes, shows that the Grey's writers aren't taking a pass after last week's awesome episode. Was this one better? Nah. But it wasn't at all a disappointment, with a little surprise around every corner and a shocker at the end. Let's just say, all you George fans out there? You got a little bit of yours today.

Were you gritting your teeth at the TV along with me when the previews showed what seemed like Derek hitting George for talkin' to his wife? And were you giggling with glee right along with me when it turned out that Derek punched his once-and-former best friend over a steamy handshake with Meredith? Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.

During the highly-charged scenes between Meredith and Mark, even the one at the end when it's obvious that Mark is too far gone for Addison for anything ever to happen between the two of them, I felt dirty, betrayed by Meredith. How could she respond so to him? We all knew who he was, and how bad he was for her. Come on, Meredith. Flirting with him is just plain wrong.

But of course, nothing happens between Meredith and Mark, and nothing that much happens between Mark and Addison. But it's there. The tension is palpable, and we're left wondering - who do we really want to end up together? Izzie and Alex, Cristina and Preston, these relationships are easy and automatic. They feel right, they're funny and sexy and eclectic and perfect. But with Meredith, Derek, Addison, George, and now Mark: it's all confusion. One minute you're sure Meredith and Derek should never be together, the next you're in love with their star-crossed love. Addison you pull for one minute and puh-lease the next.

And then. You see her in the elevator with Mark and her husband, and her husband leaves, and despite the fact that you're still angry at her, for the affair, for coming to Seattle Grace, for fighting for her husband, for not fighting enough for her husband: all of the sudden you just want her to be happy. And you realize that's pretty darn near impossible.

Thank the powers that be that Cristina and Dr. Burke continue to love one another. It keeps everything right with the world.

And the world is suddenly thrown so not right. Because - it seems - Meredith sleeps with George. As I'm yelling, it's a dream, it's a dream! Isn't it a dream? at the television, my husband is skeptical. He thinks it's real.

Maybe it is. I love George, really I do, but this is one where I never pulled for the underdog to win the girl. D'ya really think it's going to work out, guys? George and Meredith? I just shivered with dread as the scene ended to credits. It's not the way I was expecting the hour to end, that's for sure.

Dr. Sloan's real name is Eric Dane...He also appeared in one of the X-Men films I believe...

To Kathy: "Dr. McSteamy's" real name is Eric...the wife and I had the opportunity to meet him Saturday 3/11 at LAX while waiting on a plane. Very very nice guy...I'm doing a little research online to establish his last name. When I find it, I'll post again.

I really don't understand why majority of the viewers were saying "poor george".For pete's sakes,he's not a 12 year old who doesnt know what he was doing,he's an adult, just like Meredith, as what the saying goes,"it takes two to tango" so if there is somebody to blame its both of them!

"WHO PLAYED DR. MARK SLOAN (A.K.A. McSTEAMY)?"

Eric Dane. If he looks familiar, you have probably watched Charmed once or twice - he played Phoebe's boyfriend, Jason. He has had some small roles on other shows, and a few movie parts, but nothing major yet. He's yummy though, and I think that Hollywood would eat him up if he could get his "break-out part."

I'm for sparing George's feelings. George is our big ole' teddybear guy. The guy you trust with your intimate secrets and late-night crying jags. I think the fact that all these characters don't do exactly what we with the perfect hindsight would do is what makes this show soooo believable. Who among us doesn't have a friend who makes irrational life-changing decisions and then wallows in the self-deprecation for weeks afterward? And who hasn't loved without logic...? Anyone? And kudos to Bailey! She's the new best line gal...I don't even need to repeat it...we all committed it to memory seconds after she uttered it to George!

The show may have a romance-serial quality to it, but it's more about short stories involving people in many real life situations. I think that's what draws veiwers in versus troubled, medical staff relationships and hypocrisies. Sometimes themes are reflected throughout the show. For example - infidelity and a parent leaving a small child to forever wonder why, even in adulthood. The tests that relationships go through (giving up an apartment; not telling a lover to leave the city so one can rebuild a marriage).

Meridith's mother is coming across more and more as a heartless b*tch that was wild and always an uncaring mother. The theme of the pain she caused her weak husband, was reflected in the man who made the hate tapes over loves lost and insults never rebuffed because of timidity.

Physical embarassment was reflected between the multiorgasmic woman and the boy with lionitis, both who yearned to be normal and fit in.

No show is perfect, but few rate a ten in my book week after week. This is one of the few.

I do think that there's a lot of these parallels going on between McDreamy/Meredith/George and the chief/Meredith's mom/dad and I think one of the reasons behind why Meredith would kind of say yes to George is because she wants to be the opposite of her mom.

I think Meredith does treat George like her mom treated her husband, like he was just there, the kind of wimpy solid rock kinda guy who isn't particularly exciting. Except George is completely different in so many ways that if Meredith is just using him to work out her issues with her parents, I say screw her. Because I love George. He's just an amazing character and has such integrity and is sooooo ... schmoopy. And SO sweet and I would SO go for someone like him rather than someone like McDreamy. But there's so many obvious parallels between what happened to Meredith's mom and what's happening to her.

George is so sweet - how he handled Bailey last week during the infamous "Va-Jay-Jay" scene was incredible and definitely made all of the ladies heave out a instantaneous "awwww". My husband has the same philosphy about Meredith as he did about Jerry on "Seinfeld", the show would still be just as fantastic without the "Lead" character. And to see Meredith use George like she did this week, I am going to have to agree with him - that is the lowest of the low, especially since any woman with any type of instinct would totally be able to sense that George is in love with her - ESPECIALLY after he gave that beautiful speech to her (right before she prepared to break his heart). But Grey's is the BEST show on television and I am hooked and ready for some more McDreamy vs. McSteamy action!!!

George is just like Mer's father. That is why we meet him in this episode.

It seemed to me that Meredith bedding George was her way of quieting his "boyish pining." After his endearing speech she seemed completely unmoved and then just removed his shirt with as much enthusiasm as she would brush her teeth with (maybe mer and cristina should have a toothbrush party). i was waiting for george to stop her and say "no mer, no. love comes from here (points to heart), not here (points to crotch)." but you know its good stuff when you're yelling at a tv character and calling her Slutty McSlutenstein/Ho-bag Trampsterwhore.
PS Dr Mark totally looks like an over-pruned wax figurine. somebody tell dis bitch to lay off the facial trimmage! or join a boy band.
PPSS What the crap!? Was i the only one who saw the bomb squad guy explode last week? couldn't the show acknowledge that his ability to eplode was something less than fun times? because I know I was not pleased.
