The latest in my TiVo saga

by Anna Johns, posted Feb 20th 2006 9:37PM
tivo exchangeLast month, I broke up with my TiVo. Thanks to the support from TV Squad readers, we have reconciled. Unfortunately, things are getting a little bit rocky in our relationship.

It's been a month since I put my old DirecTV TiVo in the garage and replaced it with two new TiVos, a 40-hour machine named Patrick and an 80-hour one named SpongeBob. We hooked the boxes up to cable (which is inferior to satellite) and to our home's wireless network. Poor Patrick is having a rough time. He keeps crashing and resetting himself. SpongeBob crashes about once a day. The last straw was Friday night when Patrick crashed and wiped out Battlestar Galactica.

I called TiVo on Saturday morning and the technician instructed me to unplug the TiVo-brand wireless adapters because they may be causing the problem. All day Saturday and most of the day Sunday, neither TiVo crashed. I even had Patrick record 4 hours of Olympics so we could be sure. When we plugged the wireless adapters back in, Patrick promptly crashed. I called TiVo today to update them on the situation, but I talked to a different technician who insists that it's our 40-hour DVR and not our wireless adapters that is the problem. He's sending me a pre-paid postage sticker so I can exchange Patrick for a new box.

I'm no technician, but this doesn't sound right to me. I've got seven days until the pre-paid postage arrives. Until then, I'm going to keep the wireless adapter unplugged from Patrick and see if he crashes between now and then. If he doesn't, I'll be calling TiVo back and second-guessing their decision to return the box. I knew I shoulda written down the name of the first technician I spoke to.

Thoughts?

We have the same setup as you, 40 hr and 80 hr networked wirelessly with our PC, and neither TiVo has crashed, nor have there been any major problems. We've been very happy with both TiVos, and they are completely easy to use.
I tend to think the first guy was correct, but it makes sense to confirm that the box is not faulty.
As for the TiVo bashers, I hope you've all had TiVos and were unhappy with them, because really, how would you know, hm?

Do you have a Mac on your network? I've seen discussion around about issues with some Mac IM clients which use Bonjour (formerly Rendezvous) causing TiVo's on the same LAN to reboot. (TiVo also uses Bonjour.) This does seem like a bug with TiVo - it shouldn't reboot like that. But when this happens replacing the TiVo or the adapter doesn't help, it is the software.

Others using the TiVo adapters without this (including myself) don't have any reboot problems. (I don't have a Mac.)

Do they hire monkeys to do tech support these days?

Tech support 101: it's the adapter, stupid. Call their tech support back, ask for the next level support, and have it out with them. Your Tivos sound like they work properly. Those Tivo wireless adapters were just released, who knows what bugs their firmware/drivers might have. Also, since the adapters were released very recently, it may be you picked up Tivos manufactured a while ago. Although the models in the store might be the exact same Tivos you bought, a difference of a few months might mean slightly different builds, leading to compatibility issues - or, perhaps your new Tivos haven't downloaded the latest updates from Tivo.

Your last tech support guy was a hack. Don't let him waste your time. Call them back.

that's weird. our tivo kept crashing, and it turned out it was too hot. we checked the internal temperature (on the system stats screen in one of the menus) and it was about 5 degrees higher than they recommend. we removed stereo components above & below it and since then everything has been fine. So give it a feel to see if it might be running hot.

Yes, I would always troubleshoot anything external plugged into a PC. And unfortunately, the only real test is to wait and see if it locks up again with no adapter.

Was the wireless adapter on their list of preferred hardware? You could try a different wireless adapter to see if that helps/hurts the situation.

It sounds like the wireless adapters are your problem. I've never had any thing like that happen to my TiVo, and I've had it for years.
And Mike, you can easily turn off TiVo auto recording in the options. I've used a dish dvr for months and I hated it. The interface is crap, the features are nonexistant, and the picture decides to randomly stutter at times. I'd stick with TiVo even if you are having these strange problems.

I've had Dish Network DVR's since 2001- practically zero problems and None of the annoying auto records like TIVO. I now use a dual tuner DVR (about 100 hours) AND a single tuner DVR (40 hours) I haven't watched LIVE TV (except sports) in years. TIVO sucks. You just need a DVR, NOT Tivo.

I found a thread on the TiVo Community Forums that sounds similar to your issue: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=282296

Shoulda hacked a series 2 DirecTivo. I've got two, great satellite quality shows, share between them, access via the internet (all legal) and offload shows (not so legal).

I'd go outside more often, even in near zero temps. I have a hard time understanding the fascitnation with TiVo. I guess I'm just not wrapped up in TV as much as I thought.
