Dallas may not be filmed in Dallas

by Adam Finley, posted Feb 21st 2006 5:07PM

jr ewing dallasDespite being the city in which the popular television series was based, the upcoming film adaptation of Dallas may not actually be shot there due to high costs. Some private fundraising is being planned in order to create incentives for the studio to bring the film to the city where the TV series took place, but like all films, cost will be the deciding factor in whether or not Dallas actually comes to Dallas.  One producer maintains that Dallas is naturally the first choice, but it's still too early to know for sure. The reality of movie making, however, is that the celluloid version of Dallas will be whatever location is most economically viable. If producers do decide to venture elsewhere for a location, I hope the residents of Dallas will take some consolation in the fact that movies these days are rarely filmed in there supposed "actual locations." For example, Mission to Mars wasn't actually filmed on Mars. Frankly, I find that inexcusable.

Jason - Southfork is still a tourist attraction and has the gift shop. In fact, it is the site of many corporate and commercial events.

I could care less where the new movie is filmed. Either way, Dallas will benefit from the exposure.

MK in Dallas.

Well, they can't exactly call it "Dallas" if the show is not filmed at "Southfork." :)

That's unfortunate.

Incidentally, "Southfork" is a beautiful home & they have a giftshop; although, it's been years since I visited Dallas to see the mansion.

I don't know if there's a giftshop there any longer, or not!

Who cares where it's filmed. The real question we should asking is why, oh why, is this piece of 80s crap even being made into a movie? Did we learn nothing from The Brady Bunch? Can Dynasty and Falcon Crest be around the corner? And Hollywood wonders why people aren't watching their films.

It doesn't bother this Dallasite. Frankly, I don't want to be associated with another crappy movie remake of a 1980s television franchise. Toronto or Los Angeles can have it for all I care.

If you catch the reruns of Dallas on Soapnet, you'll notice that a lot of it was shot in and around Los Angeles.

Establishing shots and Dallas-specific scenes, like at Southfork or other local icons, were filmed in Dallas.

That's the reality of the business. I would suspect that the film will be shot in much the same way as the TV series
