What does the new Sopranos poster say?

by Ryan j Budke, posted Feb 21st 2006 11:43AM
the sopranos; the familyThe countdown is under way; after almost two years, The Sopranos new season will be upon us in a scant 18 days (Yes, I'm counting, I'm having a party with a huge italian feast). Like most fans of the series, I devour every bit of  "The Sopranos knowledge" that HBO wants to drop on us. The past couple of seasons, the release of that season's poster has been the catalyst for massive amounts of speculation. Who's gonna die this year? Who's going to turn on the family? Look at the way the salt has spilled in front of Paulie! So, I'm sure it will be no different with the new poster that we've been sent by HBO. You may have seen it around so far, but check out our high quality version and let the speculation begin. A couple of things that I notice right off the bat, are obviously: A) Dr. Melfi, very ghostly in the reflection of the door. B) Silvio glaring and Christopher out of the corner of his eye, seem to be the only two looking at Tony and C) Bobby is the only person sitting  besides Tony. Does any of that mean anything? Probably not. It sure is fun to wonder though. Let's hear what you have to say.

Part of me is wondering if it really does mean anything and could this need to do intense analysis stems from Lost's over-staging. =)

Is there a place where I can read about other readings into past seasons' posters and how accurate they've been? I'd love to see that.

I think you need to look at this differently...

Tony always has to look over his shoulder for different reasons.

He is worried about his personal family and the family business. Dr Melfi is the only one who knows and understands him. This is why she is inside she has a window into his world, sort of speak.

Each character is focusing on something different. This explains each character's point of view. Some are obvious - Meadow staring at her mother - she is slowly becoming her mom.

The others - you'll have to figure out. I believe Bobby is sitting down becuase he bridges the two families married into it and apart of the business.

Bobby being seated is almost certainly significant. The teaser commercial they've been showing on HBO alongside reruns as of late definitely suggests that Bobby's making a powergrab this year...

What I have noticed:

The carpet extends all the way out the door to the edge of the pool... weird. Also, from the leaves (and lack of leaves) on the trees, it is obviously Late Autumn/Early Winter, but the pool has not been covered.

I don't think Dr. Melfi is behind the door... I think she is behind Tony, inside the room, just outside the left frame of the picture (follow the REFLECTION in the door). She is looking outside at the family. And Carmela is GLARING back at Dr. M.

Is it significant that Melfi is the only person inside the house with Tony? I think so. And she is hidden from the view of the others. Will they finally act on their feelings for each other?

Carmela's got the most color going on about her. With her hair and her eyes to a certain extent. She's also standing in front of the fall-colored leaves on the tree. Also, the clothing is all varying degrees of gray and black.

On a side note, has anyone ever noticed the back cover of the Lost Season 1 DVD set? Only five characters or so are breaking the fourth wall: Sawyer, Locke, Sayid, Charlie, and Walt (might be more; i'm remembering from the store i was at).

These publicity photos are so carefully staged that it must be relevant somehow. Why go through so much effort in staging, posing, editing, etc. if it doesn't weigh in on the show it's publicizing?

I notice Uncle Junior on his way out the door frame, leading me to believe that he will die this season. I see Carmela looking over Tony's head, her back to her children and on her way out of the door frame, leading me to believe that she will turn her back on her family and leave, either temporarily or permanently. Also, Chrissy is the closest one to Tony in the picture and the only one looking at him in a sympathetic way, so Chrissy will stay with Tony to the end, in spite of the fact that Tony had his fiancee killed (because Chrissy's real love is the family and the life, not any woman). Paulie and Silvio are looking at Tony appraisingly, making sure everything is on the up and up and taken care of properly. Janice is standing and so will be the more troublesome one between her and Bobby, but she will hide behind the more benign/seated Bobby. AJ is in the same position as his mother and is looking off into the distance (albeit a different direction) so he may be leaving as well (not a big stretch -- isn't he headed toward college?). Meadow is looking at her mother critically and facing Tony -- look for Meadow to align herself with her father against her mother. Melfi is behind the door, separate from the family, but looking in the same direction as Carmela. Tony himself has the far hand hanging down over the side of his chair -- what is he hiding? Otherwise he just looks like a big grump.

Interesting that we can't see the left hands and thus the wedding rings of Tony & Carmela (or lack of rings). I don't think they got divorced last season, did they? It was so long ago.
