Will you pay for Ricky Gervais' podcast?

by Anna Johns, posted Feb 21st 2006 9:12AM
ricky gervais podcast subscriptionYou're gonna have to, if you want to hear it. When Ricky and his comedian buddies Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington (aka "The Village Idiot") launched their hilarious podcast in December, they flew to the top of the iTunes Top 100 list. Their first twelve episodes were sponsored by the Guardian, and therefore free to all of us. This time, their "second season" is going to be through Audible and the monthly subscription will cost at least $7 for four half-hour shows. You'll still be able to get the podcast through iTunes, you'll just have to pay for it the same way you pay for other Audible content like NPR'S This American Life and Fresh Air. By the way, there's a preview of the new season over at Gervais' website.

Obviously, this is a very big deal. This is the first podcast in iTunes to charge a subscription. While other podcasts are sponsored or get donations from listeners, this one will be the first to answer the question that so many business people want to know: will people pay for podcasts?

So... will you pay for Ricky Gervais' podcast?

[Thanks for the tip, Doc!]

I agree the sound quality isn't as good this time around, although that could be because I downloaded via other free sharing sources. Far too much to pay, I vote for adds.

Still funny though.

I can't believe the real "He should be doing it for free" attitude people have. They have already done 12 for free which is alot more than most comedians do. If they are doing something that people want to hear then why shouldn't they charge for it? I don't think it is alot of money and I have listened again and again. Plus only a few people have mentioned that the only reason they are charging is for Karl Pilkington (the undisputed star of the show)for whom it makes no difference whether this podcast makes people buy "The Office" on dvd or whatever because he won't get any money from that.

Well, a year ago I would have never thought I would pay for a podcast, beut I just shelved out 6,95 and listened to the first two episodes... Even though it feels odd to pay almost 2 dollar for 30 minutes of content, I'd still think it's worth it. But only for one reason (apart of Karl being very funny): it's the only podcast I'm paying for. I couldn't image paying 7 dollars a month for each podcast... I'm not sure if I woulod renew my subscription though.. maybe if they will bring back monkey news!

"The sound quality isn't as crisp and clear as the *free* first series either. I expect the quality's better on the iTunes versions."

Evidently not. I think this is going to tank Karl's broadcasting career, at least temporarily.

As previously stated, the money's so that Karl gets some income, since he's been unemployed for a while. Think about Karl!

Anyway, I'm getting it on Audible for free...it's just as well that I didn't have to pay, because somehow, the Audible files don't have the bookmark titles or the enhanced thumbnails. The sound quality isn't as crisp and clear as the *free* first series either. I expect the quality's better on the iTunes versions.

the whole of series one is only a few mb, there are loads of fans with sites that would host the whole series with unlimited bandwidth - e.g. me.

I cant pay for it, they can put adverts in it if they must.

No matter how much I like him, I'm not gonna fill his pockets...

I guess I'll just be pulling other comedy down to my iPod instead

I would pay for it. It really is the funniest podcast I've heard. Karl keeps me in stitches every time.

One problem I do have is that the show seems to crash my iPod every single time I listen to it. Whether I pause in the middle, or even after finishing the show, my iPod won't turn on again after it shuts off. I have to do the menu-middle button holding thing to reset it every time.

If they can fix that, then they're getting my $7. You pay much more than that for a 2 hour movie anyway, and you wouldn't laugh as much.

Of course I will pay. The show is hilarious and the only podcast I can't bear to miss. Most of the money will go to Karl Pilkington in any case, Gervais and Merchant are loaded from their other work and don't need this relatively tiny podcast revenue. On the other hand of course people who listen to dozens of podcasts and don't even get around to listening to this will not pay, why pay for something you're not interested in? Anyway, the beautiful thing about this is that it's pure artistic capitalism. If you like the show, you pay the artists directly. They have complete creative control and reap the vast majority of profits. It's a beautiful and revolutionary thing and I'm sure the media companies find it very threatening :>
