Things I hate about TV: Rich Kids

survival of the richestLet me tell you what television does not need any more of: rich kids living like the rest of us. Yes, we're a society that is obsessed with the lifestyles of the rich and famous. But, I am sick of seeing rich kids try to do everyday things like go grocery shopping or mow a lawn. While some people may revel in the fact that they know how to mow a lawn while Susie Trust Fund struggles with it, I do not. I find these shows to be downright rude. While Paris and Nicole proved they had no life skills in The Simple Life, they also belittle the lives that most Americans lead.

Why am I bitching about this? Because The WB has come out with yet another reality show that puts rich kids in everyday life situations, called Survival of the Richest. I saw a long promos for this program (hosted by Hal Sparks- what is that all about?) where the rich kids say negative, ignorant things about "poor" (aka middle class) people. This reality show matches the rich kids against the working class kids in tasks like yachting and cleaning. I'm sure it's rigged so the working class kids win because we all like to see those rich kids go down, but I'd like it all to come to an end. Let's just go back to Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and see how these people live, but keep them away from our lifestyles.

While these shows are clearly unrealistic, being a "rich kid" doesn't make your life necessarily any happier.

Look at so many of these "rich kids" and examine their lives. Many of their parents ignore them, run off on exotic businss or vacation trips, and leave them to their own devices, which is why so many of them end up in therapy.

Not to mention all the drug problems associated with "rich kids" that everyone fails to discuss such as "average" people & the media.

Bottom line: Rich, poor, or average, money doesn't get rid of ALL of your problems--just the financial ones.

No no no! These shows help us document all of these spoiled, insulting, useless rich kids, so we know where to find them when the revolution comes.

Even worse than these kind of shows are the ones where they show rich kids acting like rich kids. The worst for me were the sweet sixteen shows on MTV. I just couldn't believe how those parents gave into every little desire their kids had. There have been other reality shows that showed about the same thing, and just watching a bit makes me both sickened about how they act and vaguely jealous. Is that the point of these shows?

To be fair, it's not rich vs poor on this show, they pair them up, like in Beauty and the Geek. It seems to be a pretty similar show, only more one-sided. The rich kid that works well with their poor kid gets rewarded, the rich kid that snots about having to do work gets booted. I agree that it's a tired ploy to create conflict solely along class lines, but this is reality TV on the WB we're talking about here, it's not supposed to be particularly cerebral.

Hal Sparks will be known as the guy who was cool in "I love the 70/80/90's" but have horrible taste in shows after "Queer as Folk" was cancelled.
