Dennis Weaver dead at 81

by Joel Keller, posted Feb 27th 2006 5:25PM
Dennis Weaver as McCloudWow, it's been a bad week for TV veterans.  First Curt Gowdy passed away, then Don Knotts and Darren McGavin. Now comes word that Dennis Weaver, who acted in various roles on television for over fifty years, passed away Friday at the age of 81, apparently due to complications from cancer.

Weaver's best known roles were as Chester Goode on the long-running Western Gunsmoke and as a New Mexican cowboy lawman transplanted to New York City in the Seventies mystery series McCloud.

Dennis Weaver is also known for his excellent portrayal of a driver pursued by a mystery trucker in the Steven Spielberg (his first movie?) Movie of the Week "Duel"

I thought McCloud was great show when I watched it as a kid.

I have the 50th anniversary DVDs for Gunsmoke, so I watched clips of Dennis Weaver on The Ed Sullivan Show and a Chester episode of Gunsmoke. He will be missed.

Had the chance to meet him a few times when he was in town back when I worked at the CBS affiliate (circa 2000-ish). Always seemed like a really nice guy...
