Bradley Whitford joins new Sorkin show

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 28th 2006 10:44AM

Bradley WhitfordAh, another West Wing alum joins Studio 60!

Bradley Whitford (Josh Lyman on TWW) will play a producer/director of the fictional late night show where Studio 60 is set. He'll join cast members that have already been announced, including Matthew Perry, Amanda Peet, Steven Weber, and Timothy Busfield. Aaron Sorkin created the NBC show.

This is turning into the must-see show of the 2006-07 season. I'm really looking forward to this.

First, Brad Whitford can do no wrong in my opinion. He is a first rate actor that really needs to get into more films. Second, I think it's wrong to say he should NOT team with Sorkin so soon after West Wing ends. I think Sorkin-Whitford is an intellectual version of the Speilberg-Hanks or Speilberg-Cruise teams. Keep going guys, you're the only reason my TV is turned on from time to time.

LOVED Jack and Jill, if for no other reason than it introduced me to Peet, Paulson, and Jamie Pressley, who's from the same small town in North Carolina as me (Granted, I didn't live their long, but hey, whatever). Felicity Huffman is the "Guest Host" of Studio 60 in the pilot. There's nothing to say that Jamie Pressley couldn't host down the road ;)

Solsbury... I just don't see the Whitford/Micheals thing. I also don't think that Sorkin's taking a jab at Fey, as I'm sure both had these shows in mind, and were working on them long before either were announced. I stand by the fact that I think that he's been writing/thinking about Danny with Whitford in mind long before he ever heard that Tina Fey (Whom I love, too, BTW) was doing a show with a similar concept.

And who does Whitford look like more than just a little bit? Lorne Michaels. And who is producing Tina Fey's show about a late-night talk show? A little jab at the competition, I think, from Sorkin.

A little bit of a Jack & Jill reunion going on I see. This is turning out to be one of the best casts for a tv show ever. All they need is Maura Tierney and I'd pretty much be in heaven.

Toby: First off... I really have to disagree with the comment about Malina. I think that the differences between his two characters are huge (As I write this, on my TV, Jeremey is giving a tour around the Sportsnight offices to his friend the choreoanimator :). Jeremey is all slapsticky and a dork (or nerd, or geek). While Will Bailey wears glasses, he's neither the nerd that Jeremey, nor does the West Wing see that much slackstick comedy.

Second: Danny was written for Bradford. I know that NBC was the biggest obstacle in his hiring, and for the exact reasons that Toby mentions. I guess I can see that arguement, but realistically, I'd like to believe that the West Wing has a smarter audience than the rest of telelvision. Actors move around the dial and to different shows all the time. I mean, just look at the people having gone back and forth between Sportsnight and the West Wing. Granted, none (at least b/w those two shows) have moved from a prominent spot to another, but, whatev. I'm just excited he's on the show. If other people get confused, that's their problem :)

Finally, it wasn't noted here, but Sarah Paulson was cast to play Harriet, whom I'm assuming by reading the script, will be a regular character. I LOVE Sarah Paulson... I mean, LOVE her... But I was a bit disapointed because Kristin Chenowith was being discussed for the role, and, reportedly, that role was written with her in mind. I mean, I LOVE Sarah Paulson. Ah, nevermind... She's going to be great!

I'm still looking forward to this show, but I'm not sure a re-teaming with Sorkin is the best thing Whitford could have done so soon after 'The West Wing' goes off the air. I don't have a high opinion of some of the audience out there - will they see his character as somebody other than Josh? And when it comes to that, will Sorkin be able to write the character's voice to be different from that of Josh?

(As much as I like Malina as Will Bailey on the show, I don't think there's much of a difference in style between that character and the one he played on 'Sports Night'.)

Oh well, like I said, I'm looking forward to the show and I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt....

Now I'm REALLY looking forward to this show. Since this is looking more and more like NBC's big pusher, I'll be curious to see where it shows up on the fall schedule.

Will it get the old "West Wing" spot before "Law & Order" on Wednesday? Is "ER" safe on Thursday?

Bradley Whitford is one of my secret TV crushes. Well, not so secret anymore. I'm just thrilled Sorkin is bringing him on board.

Sweet action, I knew he was in talks, and was hoping he would sign.

I guess Sorkin wrote the character for him.

I cannot wait for this show.
