Daniel Franco's not so crazy

by Annie Wu, posted Feb 28th 2006 4:14PM
Daniel FrancoOn the first season of Project Runway, just one episode was enough to convince me that Daniel Franco was a little loopy. A little too much craziness and dancing but not enough talent to back it up. When he returned for another season, he definitely toned it down a little (good for you, Daniel!) but the folks at Project Runway still managed to portray him as the token weirdo. For example, when the designers had to show Heidi their sketches and ideas for the lingerie competition, Daniel whispered to her, "I want to show you something beautiful" and gave her this really weird smile. Whoa, buddy. Awkward. Well, giving him the "auf wiedersehen" didn't end the creepiness because on the latest episode (the reunion one), he said, seemingly out of nowhere, "I love you, Heidi".

But, of course, editing played a large part in making this guy seem totally out-there. I know, I know... "Reality show editors manipulating footage to tell a different story? Surely you jest!"... Franco decided to explain himself on his MySpace blog, saying that Heidi had given him a great compliment, prompting him to say, "I love you" (read his full response here). That whole bit had been cut during editing... Whether it was because of time restraints or because the Runway people wanted to make Franco look insane one last time, we'll never know (but I have a feeling it's the latter). Either way, that was definitely different from what we saw on TV, when it was just... "I love you, Heidi", Heidi awkwardly biting her lip, and a cut to commercial.

Heh, I can't help but wonder what Seal thought.

When Daniel Franco said to Heidi, "I love you, Heidi" that seemed rather creepy to me, too!

All I could think is, "Run, Heidi, run!" Then Heidi saying, "Auf Wiedersehen!"

Incidentally, if that weren't strange enough, did you hear Lupe's response to Tim's website responder's question?

She seems to have been drunk and Tim's response to her was hysterical!

Also wasn't it funny when Daniel Franco confronted Santino when they were showing past episodes at the reunion?

Bottom line: The reunion for "Project Runway 2" was not as entertaining nor as interesting as "Project Runway 1." Keep in mind, in the 1st one, Vanessa the Australian from Houston walked off the set and everyone heckled Heidi, which was rather obnoxious and rather immature.

On -his- blog, Santino briefly noted that he believed the editing was kind to Daniel Franco, and the moment was pretty awkward for everyone (okay, I doubt Lupe felt awkward). I wish Tim had done a real podcast this week. I'd love to know what he thought.
