Gervais' Simpsons episode to air March 26

by Adam Finley, posted Feb 28th 2006 12:29PM

ricky gervaisWell, we've known for awhile now that Ricky Gervais, The Office creator and revered funnymen on both sides of the pond, would be penning an episode of The Simpsons. What we didn't know, however, was when the show would air. Well, it looks like March 26 is the magic day. In Gervais' episode, titled "Homer Simpson, This is Your Wife" Homer and Marge take part in a "wife swap" reality show. Gervais will play Charles, one of the contestants who falls in love with Marge. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is the first time an outside party has been allowed to write an episode. It will be interesting to see what Gervais brings to the episode, and how his own humor will blend with that of the show. Methinks they'll go together like peanut butter and chocolate.

The details are sketchy to me, but there was a crossover episode featuring jon Lovitz's character, The Critic that matt groening was so upset about, he took his name off that episode. The crossover was insisted on by FOX, but I do not recall if it was staff written or penned by someone the network hired.

No, it's not the first time someone from "outside" the show has written an episode. They've done it a number of times. The difference is, most of those people end up becoming a regular writer for the show.
