How I Met Your Mother: Game Night

by Ryan j Budke, posted Feb 28th 2006 11:08AM
how i met your mother; barney; neil patrick harrisFor all the comic book geeks out there, this episode probably would be better named Barney: Origins. Last night we learned the secrets behind Barney and how he became...well, Barney; the pig-headed chauvinist we all know and love. I cannot imagine anyone besides Neil Patrick Harris playing this role. He's absolute brilliance, and one of the funniest actors on TV now. For me, if he doesn't get nominated for an Emmy, I'm going to be very disappointed in the system. Neil Patrick Harris versus Felicity Huffman-- I love her, but no contest. On with the show!

Once again, the reasons I love this show are not limited to just the comedy. I love how protective Marshall, Lily, and, to even some extent ,Barney all are of Ted. They know he falls hard for women and therefore give Victoria the little subtle interrogation. Marshall, who's apparently a board game champ, creates a game where the sole purpose seems to be rooting out her secrets. Victoria takes them all in stride though, and offers up her answers in stride. She even offers her most embarrassing moments up to the altar that is Barney.

Ah, Barney. It was like the whole first (chronologically) trilogy of Star Wars for him last night. We saw him go from the free-love, good times, granola eating, high-twoing, peace making hippy that he started out as, to the evil, suit wearing, cigar chomping, high-fiving ladies man that he is today. His revelation that his life is awesome was one of the funniest moments so far. When he pulled out his phone for "proof" that he slept with Shannon....
High-Class Suit - $1800
Treo 700w           - $700
Round of drinks - $35
Audio visual proof that the tables were literally turned on the girl that screwed up your life - Priceless.

I'm betting, though, that the doormat that was outside of Robin's door at the end was a present from Barney. I don't know why I got that feeling, but I just did. He was there when Ted killed his vomit streak, and he would know. I also think those two crazy kids are going to end up together. Again, just an inkling. Let me know what you think.

Barneyisms of the Night:
High-Twos
"I deem your offering... worthy"
"Hi, leg warehouse, my friend Ted needs something to stand on. Yea, nothing to stand on? Ok"
"If i don't see another rainbow, will an eagle ever soar through this tempest of whoa. Baby please, don't go. There's a thief in the palace and she's stolen all my love, there's a thief in the palace."
"But the Nee-Ha-Rog-Jauns need us"
"I'm off being awesome 24 7 365"

Does anyone know the name of the song that played at the end of the "Milk" episode?

This week's episode was amazing! This show is the only sitcom I watch now (R.I.P. Arrested Development) and it is nice to have my weekly dose of laughter.

I totally agree that the characters laughing at each other adds to the show. It is one of the most realistic sitcoms I can think of... my favorite moment of the night was when Marshall beeped someone for saying "when?" instead of "what?". I could totally see that happening in real life! Especially since I have played Taboo!

And, I just have to add, Neil Patrick Harris owns that show! I love every single minute of Barney time!

Good episode - love the sharp writing.

The song at the end was by My Morning Jacket entitled "Off the Record." It's their best song on an almost flawless album (called "Z"), and though I have a problem with this show just dumping hot indie tunes onto the end of every show and calling it cred, I think they've incorporated some of them pretty well.

Does anyone know the name of the song that played during the last few scenes (When Robin saw the new doormat, etc.)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Barney became what he hated/feared. i was wanting for someone to say it. One of the funniest/best episodes. and the last part where he was crying, was freakin great. i almost had a tear for him, until he said his life was great.

Did anyone else notice that Barney being lifted in the barber's chair more than slightly resembled the "Rise Lord Vader" scene from "Revenge of the Sith"?

I think that Barney might be one of the best concieved comedic characters on TV in a long time. He's been compared with Dan Fielding on Night Court, but he's so much better than that (taking absolutely NOTHING away from JL's work on NC, I thought it was superb). But NPH's turn as Barney is freaking hilarous night in and night out. I only started watching this show because of AH (I give anything with a Buffy alum, actor or behind the scenes, at least one shot. Except Tru Calling), but this quickly became my favorite new show of this year. In fact, I think its the only new show this year that I'm still watching.

Barney's Barneyisms are funny enough they deserve their own book. My favorite this week was the Leg Factory line :)

Good episode, but I'm still creeped out that he's telling these stories to his kids. Sure, he left out Victoria's hot tub story which probably was a good idea. But then he leaves in Marshall and Lily having sex while Marshall's mom inadvertently listens?

But creepiness aside, I do enjoy this show. It's one of the few sitcoms I watch and the only one I never miss.
