The Shield: Kavanaugh

forest whitakerThe reports of Claudette's death are greatly exaggerated, it seems; we nary hear a word of her fall, just Dutch's report to Kavanaugh that she's doing better. This episode primarily dealt with the now svelte Kavanaugh and the story behind his still-worn wedding ring. I have to admit that, at first, I thought Vic was behind Sadie's alleged rape. Though that turned out not to be the case at all, it sure seemed to help the Strike Team out in some respects.

Oh, and by the way, it's great to see Gina Torres, one of the Firefly crew, back on the small screen!

I knew it was a matter of time before Dutch approached Kavanaugh. I just wonder how far the information Dutch has will get the investigation. After the final scenes of the episode, I imagine Kavanaugh will try to squeeze whatever information he can out of anyone with anything to offer, including, of course, Antwon Mitchel. And man, did Antwon know Shane like we do or what?

Kavanaugh is most definitely losing his mind with the investigation, and his latest tirade in the middle of the Barn floor isn't going to win him any friends, that's for sure. The looks between Kavanaugh and Vic this week were some of the most intense and telling moments of the season. Vic's look to Kavanaugh, after seeing the interrogation room video, said "I know your weakness, asshole," while Kavanaugh's said, "how'd you like them apples" as he threw Lem in the cage.

One question I have is, what did Vic really say to Imolia (sp?) and was he ultimately trying to get her killed?

Quote of the episode: "We'll take M.C. Dumbshit upstairs and have a little chat."

No one noticed the look Lem gave Vic after Vic said he now knew K.'s weakness? Lem says 'holy shit' and vic thinks about weakness. Lem will turn against vic eventually.

I wouldn't call the terms outdated, myself, but hey...

As for this particular instance: no matter what Vic does, he still did one thing that overrules it all: he shot Terry Crowley in cold blood. Having said that, though? It's still a masterstroke for the writers to have us rooting for him and his crew while utterly denouncing the guy who's out to bring him down. It's further into the shades-of-gray territory than usual, even for this show.

Good cop, bad cop, the terms are outdated and THAT'S what the Shield presents: the gritty reality that this is less a job for police than for soldiers. Their brutal world requires people like Mackey and the strike team. Like a rogue CIA operation, why not make a little for yourself if you have to deal with the worst of the worst. Lemansky told Kavanaugh that "Vic is a great cop." He's right.

I thought this was one of the most powerful episodes in the show's history.

The Barn has always been out of pocket so I don't see much issue with Kavannugh running rough shod over the department especially with the hapless interim chief in place. Neither Aceveda or Glenn Close would have even let him in the building without a fight but this guy has no juice and Kavanaugh consistently shows the same muscle, conviction and manipulative skills that Vic shows with the officers. It isn't like The Barn is filled with clean cops.

They all have secrets.

What I love about this season is that it is much harder watching a good cop go bad than it is watching cops you already know are crooked. I struggle with Lem because you know he wants to do right and watching Kavanaugh break bad as Vic gets inside his head is excruciating.

Emolia (who, as an aside, totally looks like Chola on Rollergirls) probably was convinced by Vic that he is the only one who can really protect her and get her the money she needs for her son. Kavanaugh hasn't shown any genuine concern for her while Vic always makes everyone feel like he's looking out for them.

RE: The Shield
What in hell is going on with the writing in this program? It seems like this Kavanaugh dude (a lieutenant in the internal affairs division) runs the entire police department; bosses a precinct captain around like he was the building janitor; directs Mackey's squad on operations and tactics and has every cop in that precinct scared (uhhhh) witless!
Whomever these writers are, they should go back to school and learn about reality.
The way these scripts are going, I'd rather watch re-runs of Matlock.
