Loving Oprah doesn't come cheap

by Adam Finley, posted Mar 1st 2006 5:01PM
oprahOprah has a lot of money, but she recently insisted in a speech to the Harvard Business School that money, as the old adage goes, can't buy happiness. I would add that it can still buy you love, although I'm pretty sure that's still illegal in most states. The Chicago Sun-Times has a funny piece on Oprah and how much money a real fan would have to slap down for her cable show, print publications, XM radio channel, Oprah's Book Club books, and various items adorned with Oprah's name. By its calculations, it would cost $572.86. The point, apparently, is that these items are quite expensive for your average Oprah fan. I suppose that's true, but it's not as if Oprah is the only celebrity to venture into other forms of media and lend her name to commercial products.

Ophra is a community leader. Some will admire her and follow, others will not.

Some will just not even care.

Like the estimated 3 billion people living on two dollars a day in the third world. If Oprah gave it all way, that would bring them up to three dollars, for one day, maybe.

As for buying her products, that individual decision has its own sets of opportunities & responsibilities that, like charity, perhaps for some begin at home.

One child dies every approximately every three seconds of poverty, according to UNICEF. I don't think that the Oprah products issue is comparable, yet it tends to get more press. I wonder what that means...

Oprah has made many people very rich by sharing her fame to ignite anothers goals (Dr. Phil and many others no matther their color or nationality). She has also supported the forgotten and abused worldwide. Moreover, wealthy people are the ones able to give to so many of the less fortunate. Too bad most wealthy people do not; and are not obligated to do so. Oprah cares about the little people, the children and the forgotten or least among us as well. SHE SHARES AND CARES! Oprah DOES NOT have to do what she does for others. As for Mr. Frey, he chose to use kindness deceptfully. Again Oprah was trying to help Mr. Frey by making him a famous individual and a hero from whom others could find inspiration. He chose to deceive her.

How about she seek out just regular people and give them a helping hand, not just a family with a 'special story', just a family, plain and simple - like mine? lol

I think there is a hugh difference in idol worship and admiration. I admire Oprah for the accomplishments she has made in her life as I would anyone that had worked their way up the ladder of success. I do feel that she has shown kindness as well as great compassion for people in dire straits. I don't feel that she is exploiting people when she speaks of all her charities, but that she insures they are known to all of us so that we may do our part as well. Compassion, kindness, intelligence, and ambition are 4 attributes I admire the most in any person.

Money definately opens the door to all kinds of life opportunities. AND freedom to pursue them. But don't diss Oprah for having lots of money...she came from poverty...and made it big...she climbed the ropes like any one of us can also do. AND she gives back...there are plenty of Billionaire families that aren't out there helping like she is--Johnson&Johnson,Dupont,Rockefeller,tons of rich people that live behind the "curtain" and wallo in their riches...at least she is out there doing something...it may not be what YOU think she should be doing but.....she made the money...she calls the shots in her Empire....and if Oprah were a man instead of a woman...would there be as much criticism?? Also...just becuz she recommends books to read does NOT make us a bunch of dummies unable to pick our own books. In fact- I do not like the books she chooses-most of them are too dark or sad or boring but its called a BOOK CLUB---and thats what a book club is--everyone reads the same book and then discusses...what's wrong with that?? I am not a member of her club, but I enjoy 90% of her programming and have, over the years, learned many things. SO what's wrong with that? and hey, if you don't like her...change the channel.

Money may not buy happiness but it certainly allows you to select your miseries!
Oprah has worked hard for her fame and wealth. Of all the wealthies out there she is probably the most publicized which makes her grist for the media mill.
I say, let Oprah be Oprah....whatever that is. If you don't like her, don't watch her show, don't buy her magazine, don't listen to her opinions or read about her!
Last I checked it's still a free country!

I think Oprah is a very good, talented, and GENEROUS person.

She overcame her dreadful childhood, which was not easy.

Let everyone leave her alone and stop nit picking. Jealousy is behind the criticisms.
