Dane Cook and HBO: best friends forever

by Annie Wu, posted Mar 3rd 2006 10:33PM
Dane CookWord is that HBO has recently signed a multi-project deal with comedian Dane "Suck My Back!" Cook. This deal will include specials and series, among other things, and marks the first time that HBO has ever done this with any individual. They say that they're planning to air Dane's comedy tour documentary, Tourgasm, and they're also working on a pilot for a half-hour comedy series.

Whoa. Comedy series? I love Dane and all, but, honestly, the idea of having him lead a comedy series makes me a little nervous. I never fail to crack up at his jokes (despite hearing them quoted all around me, 24/7) but is he really enough to carry a show week after week? The only things I see happening are A) Dane is way too much for the series (unfortunately, I can only imagine him playing an over-the-top jackass... not the sort of character that the audience really sympathizes with) and it gets real old, real fast or B) they tone down Dane so much that it's painful to watch and his career goes hurdling down the toilet faster than the punchline for one of his drinking anecdotes. But, either way, I'll be watching to find out.

I firt heard of Dane through my daughter, Shelby. Last yaer she was diagnosed with cancer and she would listen to his CDs while she was getting her treatments. She would laugh hysterically even though she was feeling very sick, she absolutely loved him!. we arranged for Shelby to attend one of Dane's shows and then meet him afterwards. But she was rushed to the hospital with a high fever and could not go. Dane heard about this and called her on the phone to cheer her up. They became friendly and he called a couple more times. Then he sent her a clip of his show in Boston where he dedicates her favorate skit "Koolaide" to her by saying "This one's for you Shelby". She was thrilled! He brought so much joy to her and we will be forever grateful.

We lost our beautiful daughter on March 15, 2005. Dane paid her the ultimate tribute by dedicating his "Retaliation" CD to her life (you can read it on the inside cover). I think that he's not only the funniest guy on earth, but also the greatest. Thank You Dane.

I like Dane Cook's standup and would watch a series, at least once anyway. Although, it being on HBO doesn't give me much confidence in it. My guess, a behind the scenes look at Hollywood/Entertainment. It seems to be the only thing they can do in comedy anymore. Curb Your Enthusiasm, Unscripted, Entourage, The Comeback, Ali G, Extras. We get it. That whole 'It's not TV, it's HBO' tagline is beoming more of a negative for me.
