Program your Tivo with your mobile phone

by Adam Finley, posted Mar 7th 2006 1:01PM

tivoTivo and Verizon Wireless are announcing Tivo Mobile, a new technology that will allow people to use their mobile phones to program their Tivos from anywhere. Currently, users can program their Tivos through Yahoo and the Tivo Web site. This is yet another way the company hopes to set itself apart from other DVR manufacturers and compete in the market place. I have Tivo, but I don't have a mobile phone so this news doesn't affect me too much. What about those of you who could take advantage of this new offer? Is this something you would use?

I don't think I'd use it. I do occaisionally schedule recordings through the net, but that's enough.

What I would like to be able to do is access my Now Playing and To Do lists through the Web. (I know I can do it at home, but I want a simple remote solution.) I'd also like to be able to back up my Season Passes and Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down and restore them to a new box. (I'd order one of the $30 AR 80 hour boxes on sale right now.)

And lastly, I'd like to be able to control my Yahoo services settings and subscribe to podcasts through the web, using a real keyboard.

Hot diggity dog! Lucky for me I have Verizon and a Tivo. We travel alot on the weekends and I don't know how many times one of us has said "did you program the Tivo to record....?" Seriously, we have done this a few times already.

Did you know you can use your cell phone to unlock your car? If someone else has a remote lock/unlock to your car, they can press it facing the phone and you can hold your cell phone facing the door and it should unlock the car. It's a wireless transmitted signal that can be broadcast over your phone. So if the spouse has your other set of keys, you can call them up. Learned this on one of the XM Radio Car Tip Commercials.

This news makes me very happy. Even happier than the day that I realized that I could set my Tivo by going through Yahoo. And finally, a reason to be glad that I have Verizon, rather than regretful.

Though this new feature seems mindblowing...WOW...you can also use the Internet to schedule Tivo shows, so the stretch to use the cell phone is not much of a stretch. Heck, I could probably do it on my Sprint a920 with my Opera mobile browser with a little work.

Sprint, very soon, will give you the ability to program your Comcast, Timewarner, etc. DVR with the partnerships they have joined. You will be able to schedule shows straight from your phone as well as get your home phone voicemail messages. So don't through the non-Tivo DVR in the trash yet.

And no, I don't work at a Sprint store, just a mobile info freak.

Would definitley use! I've been looking for a mobile way to program my TiVo since getting a Treo a few months ago. Unfortunately, I use Sprint so hopefully this service will expand beyond Verizion.

Wait, you DON'T have a mobile phone?!? I didn't think anyone was left who didn't have a celly. I don't know whether my respect for you has gone up or down, but I am certainly shocked.

As for the service: Hell yeah I would use this if I could (I have a Comcast DVR and Cingular, so no go - yet). I constantly read about shows that I want to record, usually at this site, which I read all day in work, and then forget to set my DVR to record it when I get home. Since I would also be likely to forget to set it via Yahoo even at work, it would be nice if I could do it from my phone, about five minutes before the show is set to start, when I am somewhere far far away from a computer.
