Project Runway: Finale

by Lacy Hall, posted Mar 9th 2006 2:47AM

chloe promChloe wins! Chloe? Chloe. I didn't really want Chloe to win. I really liked her stuff in the beginning, but I absolutely hated her collection for Fashion Week. I know the judges kept saying how much she "knows women" and understands a "woman's body", but my body doesn't look like a couch. I'm not a La-Z-Boy recliner and no way would I want to be covered with half of that dreadful stuff she used. Everything was so heavy and overdone. I know that fashion shows are supposed to be about drama and "the show", but I found her stuff borderline laughable. It looked like the 1980s barfed all over her collection. And I thought her 13th outfit was stupid, especially those pockets that Diana slaved over. I just have so many mixed feelings about Chloe winning because while I like her, I don't love her.

And Santino...

Let's be honest, he is the real winner of this season. He's the one whom everyone will remember. Not Chloe. I actually really liked Santino's collection. It was simple, but sexy. I adored his fabrics. Everything just looked in place. I did not see the "boob situation" that Heidi saw. I think the problem is that none of those models had boobs. I think that there were places for boobs, but no boobs to fill them in. Santino needed boobs.

Santino did go really conservative for Fashion Week. I think that's the fault of the judges. Every week, they beat him down with how ridiculously theatrical his designs were. So, I can't blame him for suddenly going all soft and pretty. But not everything was soft and pretty. I must say, his shout-up speech to his mom was pretty lame. "Yo, my mom is the shit!...and here are a bunch of super pretty dresses." He should have added that at the end. I just wish that at one point in my life, I can give a profanity-laden shout out to my mom in front of a roomful of strangers. I'm sure that would make her proud.

Daniel V.'s collection was boring, boring, boring. Too many separates and not enough dresses. And that last dress was just plain hideous. I wanted to rip that patch thing off too, Michael Kors. But, as a whole, his collection was very wearable, and the guy is very likable. I secretly wanted him to win. (Psych...I was rooting for Santino the whole time.) But I think this kid has a great future in front of him. I'm glad to see that Michael Kors hinted at a possible job position. I think that would work out brilliantly. I agree with the judges in thinking that his 13th piece was the best piece of his collection. Maybe he and Nick should become a designing duo. And I'll admit it...I dug the handbags. I know a lot of you (and Tim) thought they looked very craft fair, but I dug 'em. I'd rock them around town.

I went to high school in the 80s. I didn't see any prom dresses, good bad or otherwise, that looked like Chloe's dresses, so all the "her dresses looked like bad '80s prom dresses" comments make no sense to me.

I saw photographs of the four PR collections soon after Fashion Week. I was certain Daniel V.'s generic collection wouldn't win after seeing those photos, so I've been surprised to hear he was the favorite and that Chloe's win was such a shock. His designs were unoriginal, the kind of thing you could find at Banana Republic.

From the photos I thought Santino's collection looked like it was the best and I predicted he would win. In viewing the runway shows on TV, I thought Chloe's collection was much stronger. I liked two of Santino's garments (the opening one and the final one)more than anything in her collection, but there were just plain bad outfits as well, such as the bootcut pants/fraying top/wine colored cape outfit and the saggy taupe dress that looked like a sack. I didn't love everything in Chloe's collection but there were no bad outfits, and she had the biggest number of outfits I liked. My favorites were the pink minidress and the brown pantsuit, both of which I'd buy and wear in a Houston minute.

I liked Daniel's black and white jacket and his cocktail dress. Otherwise, snoozers. His final dress reminded me of a Carolina Herrera dress an actress wore to the Oscars. It was brown with a big patch on the front of it. To Daniel's credit, his was more attractive...the Carolina Herrera dress was ugly.

Why did so many of Daniel's models, including the lovely Rebecca, look like they'd put their hair up before bed, rolled around all night then went to the runway without fixing their hair? The sloppy wisps were distracting.

I've seen a lot of comments criticizing the judges for saying Santino's collection was too safe when during the season, they criticized him for being too over the top. This isn't unreasonable of them. The challenge for these designers has always been to be as original and creative as possible while taking into account, the needs of the woman who would be wearing the outfit. Santino succeeded admirably at this during the Nicky Hilton challenge...the dress was both creative and appropriate for the occasion and the woman he was designing for. He failed miserably at it for the Sasha Cohen challenge, creating a skating dress so ugly I wondered if he was trying to be eliminated.

I don't understand the judges preferring Daniel to Santino, as Daniel was the one with the safest, most boring collection. However, I agree that Santino's own personal style got lost when he did his collection. It wasn't "safe" but it didn't have his unique stamp, either. What Santino needed to do was be his wild, creative self without going so over the top as to turn his creations into bad jokes. He succeeded in not going over the top, but he didn't allow himself to be as creative as he could. I know, based on the first few challenges, that Santino is capable of being extremely creative without going too far. I hope to see him do that again.

Chloe's designs were unique and beautiful. The sillouettes were unlike anything I'd seen before, but they didn't go over the top. I loved her curved seams, rich textures and the highly unusual backs of her dresses. I wasn't crazy about the fabric she used for the flowy dresses in the "blue and gold" final section of the show; the print dress with the blue shrug was the worst outfit of the collection. I adored the green and pink mini dress, the pink minidress and shrug, the gold minidress and shrug, and the brown pantsuit. I also liked the 13th look quite a bit. I wasn't as nuts about the final dress... the back was the only thing that grabbed me. Grace's lackluster presentation didn't help.

Finally, I've got to say that none of these shows packed the punch of the three runway shows of the Season 1 finale, including that of the much maligned Wendy. I reacted with strong emotions to all three collections...each one contained outfits I wanted to run out and buy right then. That's not true of any of the lines shown by the S2 finalists. The music, presentation and the designs all fell short of what was shown in S1. I'm not happy to say that. I wanted Santino and Chloe to knock them dead. It would have been nice for Daniel to knock them dead too but I didn't expect to be wowed by his collection as his clothes never really rang my bell.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one shocked and appalled that Chloe won. I won't reiterate what everyone has said about her collection--I'll just say ditto! I think there had to be some producers pushing Chloe down their throats--I just don't see how individuals who deem themselves fashion-experts could see anything beautiful or marketable about what she sent down that runway. Literally, my mouth was open in horror when her designs came down, and I was thinking, poor thing, she doesn't have a chance. It was THAT bad. Then, she wins? I don't get it. I love Project Runway, but if this is the way they're going to play--rewarding someone BR can use the best rather than the most talented and creative--then I'm not sure I'll return for season 3. It's hard to get so invested in a show and in the talent of the show to have it thrown in your face!

I think Chloe's collection was the most cohesive because of the fabrics that she used repetitively. Daniel's collection was beautiful, had range, but lacked cohesiveness. Santino had some beautiful dresses but his collection lacked cohesiveness. I believe Chloe is the only one of the three who will know how to use the money and mentorship creatively and productively.

I know, sorry about complaining about the spoiler. They have full...authority? Authority to post that, but it still annoyed me. >__<

Anyway. I apologize, Lacy Hall and TVSquad commenters.

I'm a Dan fan. Completely. Totally. But, I would have flipped out a little less if Santino won instead of him. Chloe winning instead of Daniel just breaks my heart. I don't understand! When I saw her collection, I thought to myself, "Holy crap, she has no chance of winning..."

I was so horribly wrong and I don't understand why. What in the hell did they see in that collection?! Some of those things are the ugliest outfits I have seen all season. They should have given it to Santino, if not Dan (his collection was a wee bit boring, I'll admit). Santino clearly took the judges' advice to tone it down. I'm so angry that the judges turned that back against him, saying it wasn't "Santino" enough. And the boobs issue, well, it shouldn't have been an issue. Even after they pointed it out, I didn't see a problem. You're right, those models don't have anything to work with anyway.

I cannot fully verbalize how tremendously disappointed I am. I moped around all day at school. It was dreadful.

GRAGH.

Well I just HATED Chloe's collection it looks like a bunch of prom dresses going bad bad bad. She already has a store let her design everything she has on her head for her store. Daniel V. I liked it but not loving it. I was disappointed of all the comments the judges gave Santino, what were you expecting people, you beat him up on the runway with comments like "he does not know women's body" and know he comes out with the best, sexiest and beautiful women's friendly collection and you do not make him the winner. Oh well, shame on all of you. I think as a viewer I make Santino Rice the Winner.

Thumper, according to Tim Gunn''s podcast, there was a lot going on with Santino and his mom, and he hadn't seen her in four years, so I think doing that meant a lot to him--as cheesy as it was.

My friends and I were so in agreement with you, Lacy. Chloe's collection was just ugly--my female friends and I agreed that we'd never want those things on *our* bodies. The judges also complained about Santino's fit, but we noticed fit as more of a problem with Daniel. Daniel's collection was a little boring, but I think it was more wearable than Chloe's and it was at least true to his aesthetic. Safe or not, however, Santino had the best collection out there, and should have won. Or at least Daniel should have won. However, Santino will have no problems making it now, and Daniel looks like he could work with Kors, so maybe Chloe will benefit the most from the win.
