DVD review: Newsradio, season 3

by Bob Sassone, posted Mar 10th 2006 8:33AM
NewsradioDid I tell you how much I love this show?  Every time they release a DVD set, I do a little naked happy dance around my apartment. With the shades drawn, of course.

Season three of Newsradio is probably the best season of the show. Lots of classic episodes, including "President,"  where Jimmy runs for office and Matthew grows a 70s porn mustache; "Mistake," which finds Dave getting into trouble for comments made in a radio magazine; and "Twins," with Jon Stewart guest starring as Matthew's twin (?) brother. Stewart's only one of the guest stars this season. Others include Jerry Seinfeld, Ben Stiller, and James Caan. There aren't as many commentaries in this set as their were for the first set, but the 10 commentaries are a lot more than you get with other TV shows. And the commentaries are extremely entertaining, even if they often ramble away from the episode they're watching. On one episode, Maura Tierney has to do her commentary by phone because her schedule got screwed up and she didn't know she had to be there on that day. That's pretty funny.

And there are more extras too, including a behind the scenes look at the filming of the "Mistake" episode, and a bizarre visit to Andy's trailer, where he sings. There's a gag reel, of course (the Newsradio bloopers are some of the best you'll find on TV DVDs), and the menus are easy to navigate, with very few bells and whistles to get in the way.

I often wonder how a show like Newsradio would do today. Would it be on iTunes and gain a cult following?

This was a great show. I  think it's right up there with Seinfeld, The Simpsons, and Sports Night for brilliant 90s sitcoms. Isn't it great to have these shows on DVD so we can watch them anytime we want?

Everytime I think of Newsradio I think of the real tears I cried the day Phil Hartman was murdered.

Newsradio remains one of the best comedies ever made it - it paved the way for the contemporary classics Arrested Development and Scrubs.

Awesome! I have always loved this show. Shame about Phil. The show never fully recovered. But it had a really good run at least.

I love Goofy Ball and that episode where they all have heat exhaustion caused daydreams.

Can't wait for next season with "Super Karate Monkey Death Car".

"everytime they release a DVD set, I do a little naked happy dance around my apartment."

So you have done this twice then?

Loved this show too. So many episodes, as oddball as they are, actually relate easily well (to my business environment anyway).

Their commentaries are hilarious!

totally right about this show. in fact, this show and sportsnight, i got on the bandwagon (if there is indeed a traditional bandwagon for underappreciated things) WAY late. both of these shows i stayed awake til all odd hours of the nights to catch reruns on whatever network was showing them. or actually set my vcr (ah the day's before dvrs, iTMS, and other online sources) to record these shows if i couldn't stay awake or wasn't home. such great shows. the jon stewart twins ep is so funny. and who doesn't love maura tierney.
