The Sopranos: Season Premiere - Members Only

by Tom Biro, posted Mar 13th 2006 12:38AM

Finally.

After a long wait, we've finally made it to premiere night for The Sopranos. Not only was it evident that brushing up on the cast & crew might be smart, but it was certainly a surprise to see how the show started off - after the runthrough of the major events from last season. It's been a year or so as far as the actual plot goes, and Adrianna has been missing awhile now. Johnny's in prison, Vito has lost a ton of weight (okay, not a ton...), and Carmela's spec house is on hold as it appears that the building materials she's been using aren't up to snuff.

While we weren't exactly starting off this season with a bang (no one died in the first five minutes), I gotta say that I'm mega pleased as opposed to some of the stuff from two seasons ago and a lot of last year. I guess you could say that this show kicked off with a whole stack of really random things that you might not have seen coming. I mean, Tony feeling bad for the Feeb who's come down with bacteria from his time in Afghanistan Pakistan (Thanks, ooda!), A.J. sporting a new do, and sushi apparently becoming the food of choice for the Soprano family.Jumping right into the thick of things, Eugene wanting out - which of course he got - definitely caught me off guard, but then again, who ever expected a member of the Soprano crew to hit the jackpot when his aunt dies and leaves a stack of money. What wasn't surprising was how Tony wasn't letting him out of the family, and after his collusion with the Feds, who wouldn't take the route he did? Hesh ends up having some serious trouble when he and his son-in-law have a run in with the New York crew, leaving the son in the hospital with some serious damage, as after he's roughed up he stumbles into the street and gets hit by a car. If that didn't remind me of the bus hitting that girl in Final Destination, then nothing ever will.

Janice and Bobby having a nice little family - and a train set - are leaving really strange thoughts in my head, but I guess there's nothing that can be done about that. I'm expecting some serious problems for Bobby come his next run-in with Tony, and Janice will probably fare no better. As far as run-ins go, you gotta believe that there will be some "resolution" to Vito, who is definitely feeling his oats when it comes to growth within the organization, and has Meadow's boyfriend to thank for his inclusion in the group to this point. That, I think, will most certainly change.

I'm very very pleased that Carm and Tony are doing so well. Even if she's a bit peeved at him for his trip to Nori without her, I expect that things will work out for her. She's enjoying her new Porsche Cayenne, and who can blame her. Now if only the spec house would get itself fixed up. Her seeing Adriana in her dreams has me thinking that that girl will be showing up a few more times this season, even if just in dreams.

With Uncle Junior apparently completely incapable of taking care of himself, will that leave the fam no choice but to move on as far as his living arrangements go? Pulling a gun and shooting a family member because you think he's some old school gangster is most certainly not the actions of a man who's totally sane, right? All day long people were asking me if I thought this was going to be a slow one as far as premieres go, and I didn't think it would have been. Boy, was I not even close with how crazy this worked out. If I were allowed one request though, for the rest of this season, it's that what comes next isn't all in Tony's head while he's on the operating table. And with that, we move on.

So what do you think, Sopranophiles?

Thanks for the answer to my question. How could I forget the voice of William S. Burroughs? I really think that poem is significant. Did you notice that number 5 is KA, the devil? It was A.J. You watch, A.J. is going to get into the family business sooner than we may think! I love it!!!

Whoa - previews for next week? Let's recap: Tony is shot, with gut wound, in his uncles house, hopefuly with 911 coming around (or Junior coming back around to his senses of 2006). Eitehr way, if they show previews either you KNOW tony is alive or Tony is dead - with the Sopranos there is no need for previews, we are coming back week after week to watch WITHOUT them. The last scene was a preview/tease enough for me.

With regards to the writing, our local TV commentator mentioned that Episodes 2 and 3 would delve into minor characters.

With regards to eating an product placement - the whoel point of the show is EXCESS - these guys are trying to keep up with the Jones', remember when Tony wanted to be in the golf club? They are so concerned about fitting in they do not realize they stand out. Food to excess, greed to excess, cars and material things to excess.

Just my opinion.

If you had a problem with the first episode, you obviously missed a few seasons. It's not about people just getting whacked..it takes you inside the life. They have families, dreams and problems like everyone else They didn't create a character to kill him off, Eugene has been there and it gave everyone an idea regarding "the Oath". You just can't turn your back when you done with it, it's your family for life.

Tony can't die in the first episode can he? I will be very bummed but it would lead to some great plots in coming episodes...NJ and NY without a leader? Imagine the wars? Phil needs to get one in the head that's for sure and Christopher's got his hand up saying "oh oh". When did Christopher get his Captain's stripes? wow. Wish Paulie Walnutts was in there a little more but there's more to come. Vito on his "no carb" diet, see him scarf down that hot dog at The Bing...reminded me of the scene last season..ok that just gave me a dry heave.

BOttom line-Stop hating people..it was a great episode of the greatest show in the history of televsion...name another show that would be as popular every season after waiting as long as we do. It's the swan song for a great show, enjoy it...

I loved last night's episode and it was definitely worth the wait. I have an obscure question...does anybody know the name of the old man who narrated the beginning of the episode? I know his voice but cannot recall his name. Just curious...anybody??

Tony getting shot is not a contrivance. This will create a huge power vacuum that someone will need to fill, and that others will want to fill. The ambitious crew members will start to manuever and the conspiracies will grow exponentially. Johnny Sack and Tony are now off line, at least for a while.

As for Tony, once he gets his strenth back to a reasonable degree, he will start dealing with his new allies and his new enemies. he has no friends and never has, but now the old order is 100% gone.

Meadow is amazingly sexual now. We need more of her.

Did anyone understand the references to William S. Burrough's "Western Lands" at the beginning of the episode? I'm certain this will have some significance? It is funny how the last of the Egyptian souls, the seventh soul - the remains, ended with Tony. Perhaps this will be revealed as time goes on. I thought the show was brilliant, it had an artistic flair with the Burrough's readings. The best yet - it brought all the old Sopranos into what we can expect to come in the future.

I'm curious for those who speak fluent Italian as to what Junior said to Tony right before he shot him...something about Malenga (the Big Pussy, as opposed to Little Pussy - whom Tony did away with).

Another note - Eugene Pontecorvo is not a new character. He has been around but has been in the background. This is the first we see of his family, etc. He was on Gigi's crew which became Ralph's crew which became Vito's crew. Eugene was made in the same ceremony as Christopher where the "sacred bird" was watching....

If you can't remember that Eugene has been in several past episodes that you are not one who has the knowledge to back up your argument. Perhaps you should watch the past episodes to become more aquainted with the "family". Only then can you truly appreciate the outstanding quality of this show. You also seem to miss the point that these mobsters are not crafted comedians. They tell bad jokes at inopportune times. If you want clever banter, tune into Seinfeld reruns. The greatness of the Sopranos is that it gives us a look at wise guys who are not so wise. And that's what makes every episode of this show so special.

I beleive the whole point of focusing on Eugene, who has not been a major character thus far, was strictly to backup Tony's statement to Melfi last season that for guys like him there are only two ways out, "dead or in the can."

Obviously Gene took the former. Chase seems to enjoy introducing these small story lines just to prove a greater theme or to advance another story line. Such as the case with Hesh's son-in-law, another very minor character. That whole scene really helped give more depth to the NY/NJ relationship.

Dear HBO.......I love you. I never thought I could ever become so addicted to soaps, but you have me hooked. The Supranos is a fabulous show. For all who thought this was not an intellectual experience last night you are watching the wrong show, or you know nothing about the Supranos. The complete series has never been such. Those who care about this series are not looking for intelligent conversations from the characters. Please watch the prior five series and understand all the characters in this group (the family) are not college graduates. With the exception of soon-to-be graduate Meadow and her fiance' (wonder how long he will last, remember Vito?) and Tony's Psych. The writing seems appropriate for the family characters. Thru the whole series the family characters always talk about having to drop out of college or never being allowed to attend for personal reasons.

I truly believe Tony will not die, at least not in the beginning. But it's a great cliff hanger don't you think?
