Will Meredith Viera replace Katie Couric?

by Adam Finley, posted Mar 13th 2006 2:36PM

meredith vieraFearing it might be losing Katie Couric to CBS, NBC apparently is trying to woo Meredith Viera of The View and Who Wants to be a Millionaire to take over Couric's spot on The Today Show, should the pixie-ish personality decide to head to CBS. Now, understand that none of this is official, and Couric still has until May 10 to let NBC know whether or not she'll accept the anchor position on the CBS Evening News. However, given Viera's many meetings with NBC execs, it looks as if it's probably going to happen. Unless, of course, it doesn't.

While most of us know Viera for gossipy fare like The View, she does have a background in journalism. She helped develop the short-lived but well-respected news program West 57th, and also worked at CBS News, spending part of her time there as a co-editor on 60 Minutes in the early 1990s.

Mereidth is the BEST person for the Today Show - her sense of humor is incredible, her wit is amazing, and her family values will add sincerity to the Today Show. Meredith has previous experience in journalism and knows when and how to be serious and funny when needed.
People please don't "hate" because other people were not chosen for the job. I'm sure Ann Curry and others were considered but you can't pass up on something great. And the GREAT something is Meredith Viera!!!!

I really can't believe that they are replacing Katy Couric with Meridith Viera. She has no charisma at all. She should stay on The View with the rest of the boring babes.

What a mistake!!!

Meredith Viera has a long history in news. Those of you who insult her abilities because of her work on "The View" have a short memory span. She will be a great replacement for Couric. I think her ability to bring a seriousness to "The View" proves her talent. She is able to focus on real news while maintaining the flexibility to deal with the fluffy stuff. Honestly, you make "Today" sound like it is ground breaking, super serious news when it's just another morning show. Give Viera a break.

Gahhhhhhhhh!! They have just announced it on the view. How could they overlook Ann, Campbell, and Natalie!! I'm not so sure about this choice.

My opinion is, Nobody will be as good as Katie! Please please do not put Meredith Viera in her place. All of them on the view, should stay there. "LOW CLASS" and NO CLASS!!!!!!

I would like NBC to bring back Soledad O'Brien. I think bringing back some real intelligence to the Today Show would boost their ratings. Anyone else would only be temporary until Matt Lauer leaves, and the network can replace both hosts with younger, fresher faces.

While I really like Anne Currie who has been on the Today show for a while, I don't think she provides the seriousness to carry off top news events. Meredith Viera definitely does not...please leave her where she is! Campbell Brown has a good chemistry and I don't dislike Natalie Morales, but not crazy about her either.

While we at it, enough of these fashion shows, cooking shows, etc., and by expanding the show to 4 hours, I'm afraid that is what we would end up with. How boring!!! Most of us cannot afford half the stuff they showcase during these events. It is too much of a "New York City" show. Take away some of the "Manhattan" please!

While I'm no huge critic of the morning shows, I can guess at the criteria for a successful morning host.

First, seem nice on camera.
Second, Teeth.
Third, looks/breasts. If the candidate is cute, fine. If she's good looking enough to be homecoming queen, that's two marks taken off. I call it the "Fat Oprah" effect. (Early in Oprah's career, rumor had it that she got better ratings when she was fat and trying to lose weight than when she was thinner)

Last, she has to appear to be friendly to mortals. It's the "self depreciative" personality check box and it should be checked. For an example, see Diane Sawyer.

That last one is important, and will be the reason why Katie's fans won't necessarily follow her to whereever she goes. She might have seemed genial to begin her career, but I don't think she can still fake sincerity any longer.

A Bos, 'Ann Currie'? You've got to be kidding! I hate watching her as much as Katie Couric. I agree with PLD, why not Soledad O'Brien who has plenty of NBC experience.
