CSI: Miami - Double Jeopardy

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Mar 14th 2006 1:44PM

CSI: Miami; Double Jeopardy; David CarusoThis was a sensational episode. For whatever reason, after it was over, I felt very satisfied, accomplished. Wow... I really just wrote that. Seriously though, it was very good.

One thing I've noticed as of late, is that a majority of reader comments that I've received on past CSI: Miami reviews seem to share a common sentiment. People hate David Caruso and I can't understand why. So he's a poor actor. I can accept that but he still makes this show. I like his "I'm reading this directly off of a cue card" delivery for many of his lines. I think it adds to his character, the dryness of his attitude. At least he a has a character you can pick apart, unlike Gary Sinise's shadow of a man on CSI: NY.

Okay, back to this episode...

First off, did anyone else feel like this was a case that had already happened when the episode started? For some reason I felt like we had seen this case before and this was just a continuation of it. Oh and that idiot reporter is back... Erica? I think that was her name. She told Wolfe about the mole early on in the season and that's the only good thing she's ever done.

Back to this episode, I thought the story was really well done. The way they weaved in an unrelated case, which then turned out to be related in an extremely odd way, was fantastic. Essentially, a man had been accused of killing his wife but the body was never recovered. So the jerk got acquitted and then they found the body. Obviously it went downhill for him from there but in the end, it was his new wife that had killed the first. That caught me off guard. I honestly thought the guy was guilty the whole time.

It also seems that Wolfe and Horatio's plan to flush out the mole has been put on the back burner. Whatever the plan was, it involved Wolfe being a jack-ass to everyone but he seems to be acting friendly now. Someone in the comments last week made a good observation that Valera could be the mole since she was absent and attending some meeting at the State Department. Sooner or later, one of these episodes is gonna drop a huge bomb because so far they've been tight-lipped.

LC: The show has different directors for different episodes, so you can't blame the director for Caruso's character.

I dont mind his character too much but I think if I see Cain put on/take off his sunglasses again I might go postal!

I liked the case, but the beginning and end bugged me. They found the body right as the guy was being aquitted, which is more coincidence than I can handle, and I kinda like weird coincidences in my TV shows.

Then, the not-so-witty last line of the teaser was worse than usual. "The verdict is in, but the jury is out." Bleech. I'm waiting for Det. Tripp to punch Horatio and tell him to shut up, and it never happens...

Finally, we get to the end and Horatio turns into an Ad Council shill for hate crime laws. After he lectured the DA on how bad hate is, I expected him to turn to the audience and say "The only thing we should hate... is hate," or something equally inane. The "you wanted a case you could win, here's three" was a great ending, and it should have stopped right there.

I don't think Caruso is a bad actor. Sure he has been in some flops, but I always thought his acting was pretty good in most of the projects he has done.

I just think the director has him portray Caine in such an odd and sometimes cliched way that it looks like bad acting.

I had similar feelings about Scott Bakula when he was in Enterprise. He too was a fairly good actor in other shows and movies, but looked like a horrible actor in Enterprise.

Jon, it felt like you'd seen this before on the show because you did...on the network...when they were talking about Scott Peterson on the news 24 hours a day...

Just so you don't feel alone...I felt the same way...until I figured this out :)
