American Idol: The Big Show

by Lacy Hall, posted Mar 15th 2006 1:03AM

ai logoBeing in the Final 12 means that you get to perform on the big stage, in front of the big crowd, with the big fancy lights. This is the AI equivalent of getting to sit at the adult table at Thanksgiving. No more of that kids' table crap. It's the big show with the bigger band and the souped-up sound system.

But there was no souped-up sound system in my apartment tonight.

I will have you know that one of our busybody neighbors filed a complaint against me and my roommates, accusing us of watching TV too loudly. They actually complained that Two and a Half Men was too loud. So if Charlie Sheen is breaking the sound barrier, then I know Mandisa surely would. Taylor Hicks seems like a nice guy, but I don't think he'd let me bunk with him if I got evicted. So I had to keep the volume way down tonight. No fun.

Ace Young- He was alright tonight. Nothing special. I realize that he's the best contestant at holding the mic and clapping without chopping up the vocals. And, the fact that I noticed that ridiculous skill proves that he was just okay tonight. Before, I was against his beanie cap, but his hairdo tonight sort of looked like George Washington. I love Ace, but if he wants to remain my fantasy AI boyfriend, he needs to make me feel special, and there was nothing special about the time we spent together tonight. I'm actually thinking about cheating on him.

Chris Daughtry- I think Chris is going to be my secret love muffin. He'll be my "AI kept man" for when Ace lets me down. I know it's wrong because he's married. But since this is all an elaborate make-believe fantasy in my head, I'm sure it'll be okay. Chris really did a great job tonight (on stage, not in my fantasies). But, then again, he always does great (errr, no comment). I think he's been the most consistent performer to date. I liked how he did the patented Bo Bice running mic entrance. But I would have been even more impressed if he would have thrown in some Bret Michaels ninja floor rolls. Or perhaps, a David Lee Roth high-kick? Maybe that will come later in the season after he limbers up. I'm just glad that AJ from the Backstreet Boys has a new job...styling Chris's sideburns. Did you notice the sweet S-curved chops? I don't know if I love them or if I'm disgusted by them.

Kevin Covais- Ahhhhh, jeez. Sigh. Every week it gets more and more ridiculous. When a blind man can pick up on the fact that you are inherently un-sexy, then you've got problems. I actually thought the singing sounded okay tonight, but I think that's because the volume on my set was down too low, and I was distracted by Kevin's dance moves. What was that marching/fist pump move he was doing? It reminded me of the dance montage in The Breakfast Club when the guys are doing the same move on top of the stairs. Somehow it looks manlier done by an Estevez. (And yes, I did manage to namedrop both brothers in the same non-related post. Randy Jackson, take note -- that's how you namedrop.) Also, I'm not sure, but I think I saw Kevin doing some light pelvic thrusting towards the end of that song. He will never be my fantasy AI boyfriend. Never.

Paris- I thought she sounded amazing tonight. These past two weeks have been great for her. Although, she lost my vote when she started to sing-talk during the post-interview. I hate sing-talking. Just talk or sing. You can't do both. And I was a little concerned about her outfit tonight. It looked cute, but I was worried about the little skirt with the super high split up the middle. I thought we were going to see her cooter. This is live TV, I don't know if they would have had time to put the AI censor logo up that quickly. Luckily, we didn't find out.

Melissa McGhee- I didn't think Melissa sounded that great tonight. She was very pitchy and her voice was scratchy. Plus, she forgot the lyrics. She said that her voice was rough and she'd been gargling with olive oil. I realize now, as a writer, I'm lucky. Even when I have severe writer's block, I never have to use olive oil on any parts of my body to further my career. I understand, with some professions...that's necessary.

Taylor Hicks- You know that when Stevie was giving Taylor his criticisms, producers wanted to whisper in his ear, "You should see how crazy this bastard looks when sings." But Taylor was great tonight; he did Stevie justice. And yes, he does look like a drunken dad at a wedding. But apparently, Taylor does perform at weddings. How awesome would that be to have Taylor perform at your wedding reception? He'd probably accompany the Chicken Dance with his harmonica. But what was Ryan trying to start with the gray hair thing? They aren't gonna dye it. Are they? It sounds like a ratings ploy, but AI doesn't need such a desperate ratings ploy. Not yet.

Lisa Tucker- She sounded great tonight and she definitely looked edgier with her leather belt and shrug. I'm still confused by her new look though. At times she looks amazing, but those twitchy eyebrows throw me for a loop. Sometimes, it seems like she's a gender reassignment procedure away from being one of those dudes with a handlebar mustache that ties damsels to railroad tracks.

Bucky- He never heard Superstition before? Yikes. He sounded okay, but just for Bucky. Meaning, that if one of the other contestants sounded half as bad, they would have instantly been voted off before voting even began. The judges gave him adequate comments, but I think he just stunk tonight. His hair did look pretty though. Very, very pretty.

Kellie Pickler- I personally thought she looked gorgeous with her big hair and black dress. But I think Dolly Parton looks gorgeous too. She did look stiff while performing. I guess it's because she was so uncomfortable in her new shoes and "tarantula fake eyelashes". Tee hee. Her dumb blonde act is getting old.

Mandisa- I thought she was the first good female performance of the night, but it wasn't her best. She kicked up the vocals at times, but something was lacking. Mandisa's performance included my favorite awkward editing moment of the night. I loved it when producers cut from her family's jubilant celebration to the most stagnant white family I've ever seen. Good segue to Seacrest, guys.

Elliott Yamin- I actually would have preferred him singing "My Cherie Amour", but I think he did pretty good with "Knocks Me Off My Feet". I'm not sure when Elliott started to wear scarves recreationally, but I dig it. And, forget about Simon calling him the best male vocalist in AI history, when Stevie Wonder says you're made to be a singer then....hey!

Katharine- She's not going to stop any pregnancy rumors by wearing that dress. She sounded great tonight. The judges compared her performance to Kelly Clarkson, but I thought her post-interview was more like Kellie Pickler with her repeated "I don't know" response. Nobody is a fan of a dumb brunette.

My pick for elimination: Bucky

My vote: Chris

Last night's show was good. I just wish they could find another judge to replace Paula though. She's just too nice, and doesn't really want to tell the contestants the truth when they stink. Thank God Simon is there to bring people back to earth. Now then, on to the contestants:
ACE- The boy band wanna-be was not impressive last night. I think he has a great look, but his voice is average, and he's not half the performer of others in the competition.
KELLIE: She's cute and cuddly, but she belongs on Nashville Idol. She was way out of her league trying to sing a Stevie Wonder song.
MANDISA: Arguably the best female vocalist on the show, but didn't perform as well as last week.
KEVIN: Go away now! Just go! Please! Your presence makes this competititon a joke. He's even worse than Anthony Federov was last year. Note to the judges: STOP TRYING TO FIND THE NEXT CLAY AIKEN...ONE IS ENOUGH!
BUCKY: Not bad last night. I honestly thought he should have went home before Gedeon (who looked like Buckwheat), but he showed some improvement with a tough song.
LISA: I'm still amazed at her poise considering her age. I don't think she can win, but it won't matter. She has at least 30 years of recording ahead of her.
PARIS: Another youngster with great talent. She won't win either, but I could see her singing a Metallica song. Maybe a little "Nothing Else Matters." She could pull it off.
ELLIOT: I'm still not really a big fan of Elliot. He has a good voice, but he's not a great performer. He also looks like Adam Sandler, and I keep expecting him to break out with "Red-Hooded Sweatshirt."
TAYLOR: Great Performer, has fun, above-average singer. I'd pay to see him just for the show. Although, I'd like independent verification of his age. I think he's closer to 39 than 29, but should there be an age limit on talent?
CHRIS: Will this be the year the "Rocker" wins? I tell you what, I'd like to see him break out with some heavy stuff, like "Down With the Sickness." This guy is a top-notch heavy metal vocalist. He'll sell out stadiums. He's a guaranteed Platinum artist. If I were Simon, I couldn't care less if he could sing tired old pop songs, get him signed and have him rock the world! Forget American Idol, he's a Rock God.

I knew Melissa was leaving tonight...hopefully Kevin will be next to go home. Kevin is acting very arrogant, and dorky. He isn't a "sex symbol," where did that come from? He keeps singing in the same tone, meant for school choir. He...is very strange.

I was impressed with Chris, the microphone stand should've been set aside (Bo already did that).

The comments that Kevin said to Simon will hurt him, being vulnerable is what kept him on the show.

Melissa was nervous, I'm looking forward to seeing what song choice she picks next week. I agree that Kellie's dumb act is getting old.

I love Elliott, I'm sure he will be an inpiration to alot of people for what he has overcomed,(Very talented).

Bucky is growing on me. I thought he would be gone two shows ago. I am glad he is still with us.

WHY OH WHY IS CHICKEN LITTLE SAFE?

Seriously....I am ready to stop watching over him. Anthony Federov and John Stevens overstayed their welcomes, too, and never should have been top 12 to begin with. Kevin is even worse than those 2.

Make it stop!!

There must be a way to write the network and make a case for the voting off rather than voting for...that might be a better system.

Love Chris generally, but as far as I'm concerned, you may as well just hand the whole thing to Taylor Hicks right now. He has something the others really don't - an unforced, sincere and totally apparent sense of passion and feel. Believe me, the audience gets it, too. I voted for the following folks at least once:

Elliott
Mandisa
Melissa (disagree with you - she sounded great lyrics problems notwithstanding - try to sing "Lately" just once all the way through and you'll understand)
Catharine
Taylor
Paris
Chris

The only number I had consistent trouble getting through on for the whole two hours of those I listed was Taylor's. I bet if they published the weekly voting totals you'd find that he's been at the top every single week.

The past 3 years I have been able to predict the winner each time at this phase of the competetion.
This time I am still at odds with who I believe will be the next AI, but I predict the top 3 to date.
Katherine,Mandissa and Elliot.
Now my feelings on Kevin ! This kid reminds me of a bobble head, How he has made it this far is beyond me.
I thought Gideon had an incredable voice but his attituded doomed him early.
Tonight Kevin will go home, Next week Melissa or buckey and so on.
Chris is getting old with the same old style, he will make it to about #4, he is good, but limited.
Pickler? I have to still laugh at her dumbness, she will make it to #8.
I will be glad when Bobble head Kevin is sent home, only then can I focus on the real talent.

i thought taylor blew past everyone last night- what a showman! i loved chris too.
that kevin is even there at all blows my mind- how embarassing, and lucky for kellie.
would the show change if we got to vote off whomever we wanted each week instead of who we wanted to win/ just asking.

Kevin has got to go! I do not understand why he is still there. How did he get this far in the competition? There is some great talent this season but my favorite is TAYLOR HICKS! He is just fantastic! I hope Taylor makes it to the finals. Keep up the great singing Taylor!

Well first off I do not see why that Kevin person has even made it this far. There is absolutely no talent there. Mandisa has a nice voice but she has to lose weight. I can't get past the weight issue. It looks very unhealthy. And she knows she cannot wear shoes like that. Kellie is annoying and her singing is not that good. She can only sing one type of music. The only real talent on that stage last night was Paris, but please stop with the singing/talking thing, Taylor, Lisa and Mandisa. If Kevin doesn't leave tonight then something is real wrong with this show. The rest I just seem to forget about.

First off, I agree w/ the person who said give Bucky credit for singing something so out of his element. Not my fave by far, but as it was said, imagine Paris---great though she is---singing Metallica.

Second, PLEASE let Kevin be gone already after tonight. Gideon was not my fave, either, but he was a better choice than this awful lisping Chicken Little JOKE! I cannot stand the sight of this kid, he really erodes the credibility of the competition worse than probably anyone I've ever seen in the final 12.

Third, Kellie Pickler...the act is beyond old and it IS an act. I mean, how much more contrived can it be? Need proof? Why does frosted head idiot Seacrest only talk to a select few at length? The public may vote...which I don't entitrely trust, but the producers and judges sure do their best to lead the voters to certain conclusions.

I love: Taylor (most original) and Paris...I like Mandisa, too, but she may have a Jennifer Hudson shouting tendency, great as she is... I like Elliot, but he needs better choices and more fire on stage. I like Chris, and while he is consistent, he does the same thing over and over, too...and I am not a fan of Nickelback so that wears on me a bit.
