The Sopranos: Join the Club

After the shocker that closed off last week's episode, it's not too out of line that we're treated to a famous Sopranos dream sequence this week. I got a big kick out of the show description on my TV's program guide, saying that Tony experiences "mistaken identity while on a business trip." Surely, this "means" something overall, but it wasn't even that simple. I'm truly beginning to feel like every little thing that happens, every nuance, means something to the overall plot. The previews for next week show what will presumably be the beginning of some troubles for the Family, and we're getting teased with more about that every week.

Looking into the title, "Join the Club," might lead down the direction of people who end up working as rats for the feds. And with Christopher having the Feebs in his face about terrorists being funded in this country by drug dealers, etc., we got a little taste of foreshadowing when he bumps into the two Middle Eastern men in the Bing. He already knows what got his girl offed, so it'd be a really big deal if he started talking to the agents. As for the real family, I thought seeing Carm the way she looked was almost as intense as seeing the open wound on Tony's stomach. She's in a rough place right now, and somehow holding it all together with her slacker son making a confusing attempt at making things good with his dad.Looks like David Chase & Co. aren't going to disappoint when it comes to Vito's backstory - hearing him make an excuse related to Eugene's suicide by saying "maybe he's a homo and couldn't talk to anyone about it." Those words will probably come back to bite him. As much of a punk as AJ has evolved into, it's pretty clear that his skipping out on visiting his dad at the hospital and the way he's acting seems to be more about deflection and less about the rest of his personality. Flunking out of school isn't going to help him get points with Carm, but that's okay. Settling the score with Junior might be a huge point this season, should anything actually come to fruition there. Needless to say, nothing will ever be the same. Oh, and what's going to happen when Dr. Melfi finds out what is going on?

I was so happy that this episode's dream sequences didn't try and be 'real' and let us know exactly what they were. Seeing the helicopter lights targeting Tony as he walked outside and showing the doctor peering from behind a light was kind of cool. What I was wondering about there was whether or not Tony actually saw the doc, or not. The completion of this week's dream pretty much sealed the deal for me as far as Tony's death to come. What might have ended if he'd made the "call home" on the hotel telephone looks like it'll be delayed at least another week. Also, his telling the doctor "I'm lost" at the hospital was a bit curious. Could that be some sort of realization as to his situation in reality, or something deeper? I'm also very interested in finding out about the voices on the other end of the telephone when "lost" Tony calls home. His wife doesn't sound so much like Carm, and his daughter appears much younger. And did you notice that Tony's calls all have either his wife or daughter on the phone, no AJ? That sounds spot on with him "hearing" their voices when they spoke to him during his coma. He didn't make another call, and never got to "talk" to his son.

It doesn't look like any of the other members of the Family are going to be cool headed enough to settle this situation fairly. Whether or not Vito makes it through the next few episodes will be smart to watch, because he appears to be the first person to be looking to "take over" a bit - or at least the only one really vocalizing it. In some ways, knowing that an "end" is near for this show and having what goes on during the next year's worth of shows truly lead up to that will make the coming weeks even more addicting to watch. Now, about those product placements...

I think the alter "wife's" voice IS Artie's wife. They were previously dating and she didn't like that he was in the buisness. Remember she broke up with him because, "That life wasn't for her.".

This show is definitely the best show on television especially for us Italian-Americans who understand all the little cliches and Italian sayings. It's dissapointing to see Uncle June written out or less involved. He was certainly one of the old time Italian guys with so many sayings, for example when he fell in the shower and yelled out "your sisters c_ _ _ _!" Which in Italian would be "la fessa di sorda!"

Carm had a falling out with Uncle June because he planned to have Tony clipped with Livia.

First of all, it was not Gloria Trillo (A. Sciorra) - as HBO has already denied it was her. It seemed pretty straightforward to me that it was Artie's wife Charmain (sp?) - who dated Tony when Carm was away prior to the marriage, and as mentioned before in earlier post, Charmain has always been dead-set against the mob life.

The allegory and symbolism was rampant and occasionally cool, but most of it was too damn obvious (gee whiz - Kevin "Infinity" Finnerty; wild fires; crosses; monks; "I'm Lost"; light in the distance - all kind of pat and predictable. David Chase is capable of better.

I would bet the ranch that Tony does survive and comes out of the coma in some way shape or form by the end of this "season" (i.e. prior to the extra 8 episodes in January) at the latest. Whether he emerges to find AJ has shot Junior or awakes wanting to go legit or awakes to generalized chaos in the Family thanks to in-fighting among the capos remains to be seen.

Some great foreshadowing on Vito, AJ, the muslim guys, etc as previously mentioned.

When tony fell down the stairs, that was corresponding to
when the doctors induced a coma in him.

Thanks for pointing out the 'beacon of light' vs. the 'burning
landscape.' I knew he was in costa mesa and that was what was
on the TV when the wildfires were burning but hadn't figured out
the other part.

Hey I agree "join the club" was a great episode. The thing that bugs me, and I can't believe he would do this but are both the dream and what we are lead to believe is the "real" show could actually both be dreams. That open wound looks real hokey to me. I mean you see the gun shot wound and next to it is this big hole in his gut. Other things about the "real" show bother me. Janice's over-reaction, the media coverage and the conversation in Meadows room. What if these are delusions are from food poisoning. Remember Tony was eating all that sushi in the last episode. It's a stretch, especially since they already did the delusions from food poisoning thing. Remember when they sent Big Pussy to sleep with the fishes. Tony had food poisoning that day and had several delusions. Just another theory. That's what's great about the show. You have know idea where it is going or how it is going to get there.

I am not sure if anyone else has posted this or if anyone else has noticed but was it Sydney Pollack who played the doctor with the very grim prognosis of Tony's condition?

If it was it seems to tie in with the "Ren, the secret name" or the "Director" who "directs the film of your life from conception to death".

PEOPLE TONY SOPRANO IS NOT GOIN TO DIE IF YOU DOPES LOOK AT THE SEASON TRAILER CLIPS YOU WILL SEE TONY IN LOTS OF OTHER EPISODES AND HES PERFECTLY FINE!....TONY WILL RECOVER AND SH** WILL BE BACK TO NORMAL WITH HIM!

MY favorite part of the show (besides the line paulie said to aj) was when all the guys( silvio, chris, bobby, paulie, etc etc) where driving up the soprano's driveway and paulie yelled at the reporter " oooooohhhhhh get the fu** off the property i thought i told you yesturday the curb was your fu**in limit" ( or somethin along those line) and then he pushes the camera away....i love how paulie acted there and i love his character for those types of things and i dotn think anyone who could play that part better then tony sirico!

I HATE VITO!...to me he is still a nobody ya know like those character that arent part of the main group...like eugene, patsy, benny, bobby, etc. To me the main group is tony, sivio, paulie, and chris ( the big guys. And who the hell does vito think he is to start talkin about him bein boss or movin up, he may be a top earner but hes one of the lowest in the respect catagory. That would be the day pauile walnuts lets someone like vito take over. Which brings me to say that i think paulie is realizing how vito is throughin out hints about movin up which as we could watch paulie is not abotu to sit back and watch as we already see a little bit of hate forming toward him. And all paulie needs to find out is that the vitos a fag and he'll probably kill him on the spot

Gettin back to the scene where all the guys drive up tony's driveway, whos gmc yukon was that..looked like silvio getting out of the drivers seat?

Anyone else think that Connie is easily impressed by MSNBC hacks who know how to google Jacques Pr鶥rt? Cross posting does not a good blogger make...

Gee Vince I guess Andy just isn't bleesed with your gift for nuance and atttention to detail. Love the Badfinger dude...follow the light...follow the light!

Anyone else think that Janice was way over the top in her reaction to Tony at the hospital, bet she'll be chomping at the bit soon enough to get her Bobby a good position in the reorganization.
