American Idol: Cough, Cough

ai logoA few weeks back, I talked a lot of crap about contestants who blamed their poor Hollywood Week performances on being sick. Well, I take it all back. I'm sick with a capital "ICK." I've OD'ed on NyQuil, and (unlike Paula) I think it would be wrong to slur my way through evaluations that include references to moths and salads. So, I apologize in advance for the brief commentary and the lackluster witicisms that are as stale as Ryan's running "Kevin is a stud muffin" gag.

Just like Elliott, I've never been a Fanilow, but...

I'm impressed with Manilow's professionalism. This guy really works hard with the contestants and I respect that. He could do the normal guest bit where he hears their performances, drops a few sound bytes, and then waves to the crowd. But he really helped them rearrange the songs. I'm impressed. But, does Manilow always wear a blazer? I've never seen casual Barry. When is it dress down day for easy-listening pop stars? And, how long are we going to go before it's revealed that Clay Aiken is Manilow's love child?

Mandisa- She was great, like always. But, I was more intrigued by the hug that Barry gave her. His arms were all over her. Barry likes 'em big.

Bucky- He's gone. Soooooo gone.

Paris- She sounded great tonight, but I was more into her outfit than her voice. I loved the finger wave too.

Chris- Wow! I didn't love the new arrangement of "Walk the Line", but I'm impressed with the balls on this guy. He's on a totally different level than the other contestants. I think the producers should have laid off the strobe light during his performance. It felt very Halloween House of Horror circa junior high school, and it jacked up my dog's pacemaker. I had to change the batteries during the commercial break. And, is Chris getting more handsome each week, or am I just falling in love with him?

Katharine- She sounded (and looked) very sexy and sultry tonight. If they ever make a Katharine McPhee wig, then I'm buying one. She's got great hair. But I just want to point out that it doesn't make sense to say you have McFever unless you spell it McPheever.

Taylor- I think he looked cute in his suit tonight. I know that it's not okay to wear white after Labor Day, but when are you allowed to start wearing white? 'Cause those white shoes were pretty cool. More grandpa in the Florida Keys-cool than hipster-cool, but still. It looked like he still had all his grey hairs this week, so hopefully it was all just a rumor. Until we know for sure, the Taylor Grey Hair Watch continues.

Lisa- That outfit sucked. It was cute for the mall, but not American Idol. That was a great song choice, but she didn't bring enough excitement and charisma during the live performance. She sounded better in rehearsal.

Kevin- Get your hand out of your pocket! I can't believe I'm about to say this, but...I think he sounded okay this week. In fact, I think he sounded pretty good. It could just be the NyQuil delirium speaking, or maybe I finally see what all those grandmas see. I actually found out this week, from my dental hygienist, that a lot of the little girls who come into her office have the hots for Kevin. I sorta feel sorry for these girls. All the boys in the world and they lust after Kevin? Do these girls have low self-esteem? It makes me think that Kevin is someone you crush on when you think that Harry Potter is out of your league.

Elliott- Not a good week for him. Very boring and very forgettable.

Kellie- She was great tonight. Way too much blush though, but an absolutely perfect performance. Minus the blush, she looked great, sounded great, and did an amazing job making full use of the stage. In fact, she was the first contestant to travel to the mini-stage behind the judges. She really matured tonight. Also, it was great that they didn't play-up the dumbness thing this week; although, they tried to bait her with the minx thing.

Ace- I like the return of Ace's trademark sexy come-hither look at the conclusion of his performance. As long as he does the come-hither, it's a good night for Ace.

My pick for elimination: Bucky

My pick for the "surprise" person in the bottom three: Elliott

My vote: I'm too sick and drugged-up to vote. I'd accidentally dial the wrong number, and INSERT WITTY JOKE HERE.

Is anyone else ELATED that Kevin was FINALLY voted off????
Mandesa was amazing! Katherine wasn't bad but she doesn't have a lot of likeability (IMO). Bucky or Lisa should be the next to go. Paris wasn't bad, as well as Elliott and Chris. Although I'm disappointed to find out from you all that Chris's version of "Walk the Line" was Live's, I still think he's very talented. I'm not a fan of Taylor, although yes he does have personality. Not a fan of Ace either.

Katherine is pretty with a good voice but no "cool factor." She has no sense of identity or originality as an artist, her fashion choices are horrendous and she cannot dance or move well. She would be much better suited singing cabaret/broadway. Kellie definitely has a country career ahead, but the two most interesting and creative singers among the women are Mandisa and Paris. Paris is a creative time bomb waiting to explode. Chris is the clear standout among the men.Great rock voice, solid artistic identity, and sexy intense good looks. a star. It will be hard for anyone to beat him.

Clay Aiken as Manilow's love child? You must be kidding. I despise Manilow and love Aiken. They're nowhere close. Have you never seen Aiken live? Go once, you'll see what I mean. The man can rock and does and I'm a Who fan so I know something about rock and roll....;-)

I agree that Chris was very flat at the beginning of his song and the judges did'nt seem to hear it at all! I think that Mandesa and Catherine were the best overall and Bucky was the worst. Elliott has always been my favorite musically. He always sings very difficult pieces that change alot harmonically dispite the fact that he has lost most of his hearing in one ear. Kevin really does have a nice voice, but he just doesn't fit the american idol persona. I thought Lisa was not up to par last night. She sang her song very heavily instead of the light, bouncy feel it should have had. I think she will be in the bottom three tonight. I can't stand Ace! He seems to be stuck on himself and was eating his hair during his song last night. Yuk!!!!

LISA IS THE BEST

This is a disgrace how the judges and America both don't respect her voice. I can't believe that she doesn't have a larger fanbase.

Regardless of how she finishes, she will have the best career in the end.

Wow I am glad that other people recognized that Chris was doing the band Live's version of Walk The Line. I didn't know it was on their "Best Of", and had only heard it on a fairly obscure PBS special soundtrack for a Tribute to Sun Records.
Anyhoo, I wasn't even upset that he used it, but more at the fact that the segment made it sound like he created that version of it. I have a feeling though that it was more a production decision...someone on that show knew it wasn't his verison and made the decision to make it look that way. Probably someone who got some heat for letting him mention he didn't know Higher Ground was a Stevie Wonder song.
Well there is a big difference between telling a legend you don't know his music and pretending that you wrote a new version of a song.
Shame on American Idol for not handling either situation properly. Their overreaction to what they should have done last week just makes him look like a thiief now instead of a punk kid who just really didn't know any better.
On the other hand, I think if you like a song enough you know who it's written by and if it's a cover... Otherwise I classify you as one of "those people" who have a strong opinion that Lynyrd Skynrd and Jethro Tull are both really good singers. If you don't understand that one, please do not procreate.
Am I the only one who thought the Pickler was a bit crosseyed and disoriented last night? Me thinks she was sipping out of Paula's cup. And with all the product placement on this show, when is Bacardi going to get their logo on Paula's Coke glass?

I did not know that Chris did not create the arrangement of Walk the Line.....too bad, because I voted for him because that blew me away....He is still the best though. I think Mandisa was awesome....I am getting tired of Kevin going on to the next round...he is so lame (He is NO Clay Aiken)...Bucky is out of his element - he is a southern rocker - and needs to stay in that catagory...I do not understand why everyone likes Taylor so much - he reminds me of a Holiday Inn Lounge act.

In response to comment #20.

WRONG! Do your homework before you speak!

With the exception of "Come Rain or Come Shine" which was written in 1946.

"Teach Me Tonight"

The music was written by Gene De Paul, the lyrics by Sammy Cahn. The song was published in 1953.

The biggest hit version of the song was recorded by The DeCastro Sisters, charting in 1954.

"When I Fall in Love"

Written by Edward Heyman and Victor Young. It was introduced in the film One Minute To Zero (1952). The song has become a standard, with many artists recording it, though the biggest hit version was by Doris Day.

Doris Day's recording was made on June 5, 1952. The recording was released by Columbia Records. It was issued with the flip side "Take Me in Your Arms." It reached #20 on the Billboard chart.

A version recorded by Nat King Cole on December 28, 1956, though not issued as a single, is well-known. It was issued by Capitol Records on an LP album, Love Is the Thing.

And yes, I did hear his lyrics faux pas at the beginning of his song, but so did he and he pointed that out to the judges. Lighten up on the guy. ;)

people may think that elliott has no personality because he's not given as much airtime or backstory as chris. in my opinion, elliott is the best vocalist of the guys and he always chooses a song that challenges him unlike chris. go elliott!
