Lost: The Whole Truth
We're back! The first new episode of Lost since sweeps, which was the first new episode since... sweeps. Luckily we won't have to wait until
May to get the next episode. Tonight's episode of Lost dealt with Sun and Jin
and their struggle to expand their family. Did they succeed? Is their baby going to be picked up by the Others? Was it
what they both wanted? Were they both *ahem* even involved? Well... that's a whole other story, and one for a
flashback. With that in mind, on with the show! The focus of this episode was on Sun and Jin, this is the third time we've gotten a back story devoted totally to them, and I honestly had a hard time keeping up with this one. Their (and really any) story in subtitles is just naturally alienating, but this episode in particular just didn't seem to grab ahold of me. I was much more interested in all of the sub-plots going on than I was in that main story, and while they normally balance the side stories and main thread pretty well, this one was pretty lopsided. We learned of Sun and Jin's quest to have a child together, and of Sun's love and relationship with another man. Fast forward to "now" on the island and with a little help from Dr. Jack and pharmacist Sawyer we find that Sun is pregnant. Considering that she hasn't "been with" anyone, including Jin for quite some time, they both chalk it up to being a miracle. I, myself, chalk it up to Sun being a liar.
As I said earlier, the stuff on the side was much more for me. I liked the trust that Locke is just all of a sudden throwing at Ana Lucia. I liked Charlie's continuing urge to "fit in", no matter what the costs (his safety among the top of that list). I find the budding attraction between Ana Lucia and Sayid fascinating. They say that hate and love are the two closest related emotions and nothing says "I hate you" like killing the woman you love. Above everything else, I abso-freakin-lutely loved the last couple of minutes of the show. The mind games that Henry Gale continues to play on Jack and Locke are entertaining to the Nth degree to watch unfold. It seems like no one is going to win that battle of the minds.
The producers of Lost said that they were going to explore the dynamics and society of the group more this year as opposed to the mystery of the island from last year. That's caused a pretty big uproar among the fans, but in my eyes, this has been a brilliant season so far. Above all else, this is a drama, and that's what we're watching unfold in this arc, and I'm enjoying it immensely. I think once this is done, and everyone can look back and watch this without any weird or extended breaks, it will be appreciated more. Let me know what you think.
