American Inventor: Open casing-calls, part two

by Keith McDuffee, posted Mar 23rd 2006 10:42PM
american inventorThis week we visit Chicago, L.A. and Atlanta. It sounds like the next round is actually going to be yet another pitch round, where the people who were allowed to "move on" will have to pitch their idea once again. It also sounds like it's not airing again for a while, judging by the previews at the end of the show.

As for the judges, I'm really not liking the woman judge. She just wants her own way too much, and really whines when something doesn't go her way. Those guys on the panel must really get a headache at the end of the day.

Oh, and the bald judge? He should start telling people he doesn't like that their idea is "Inconceivable!" Princess Bride fans will know where I'm coming from.

Those allowed to move on this week:

Receiver's Training Pole
-- These guys know how to present, expecially to the audience they'll need to sell to. This thing will be great for high schools, colleges and the pros. Not a fantastic idea to win the show, but I can see its application.

Bulletball/Bulletball Extreme -- OK, this one didn't win, but it really was a hard story to hear. I really did feel bad for this guy, and his idea really wasn't all that bad. I really think the judges were too harsh on this idea and have never seen how insane some professional ping-pong games can get.

Bathroom door holder -- Everyone loves this idea, and so do I. Such a basic idea to solve a common problem, and well executed.

Here Comes Nya Doll -- Why the hell did they let this idea go, yet they let the idea from last week go? Like they aren't using this purely PR? There must be a lot we're not hearing during the interview process. Anyway, it is a good idea, though I'm not convinced it's worth winning the show.

The Headliner -- An invention that's incredibly simple, though it could apply to a lot of people. But honestly, it's not all that exciting. I sort of felt like the woman was playing the cancer patient card a bit too much. And I'm really hating the woman judge for

Other's that made the cut: Video Tattoo (um, I've seen these, no?), Water Baseball, and My Heart Bra.

The 'My Therapy Buddy' was the creepiest thing I've seen. I think I need therapy after seeing it. In fact, here's the quote of the episode:

"My issue is the fact that if I needed a cuddly toy to tell me that everything is alright, I can assure you I'd know that it wasn't alright."

Oh, and a blogger at http://www.AmericanInventorSpot.com has attached the name "Mary Lou Boo Hoo" in one of their blogs to one of the judges, which I think is a great name for her. Too funny!

This is a great blog, it is good to see all the frank comments. I hope you don't consider this spam, but the inventors who were washed out are proud of their web sites which are posted at http://www.InventorUnderground.com The list keeps growing each week as more contestants are voted out.

The web site is going to operate the best internet talk show concerning the show. Listen in or better yet call in.

Anyone else catch that the girl with the brilliant "bow lingerie" invention has been on reality TV before?? She is the infamous Gina Huerta from Fear Factor. She's a producer for the Jerry Springer show, and made a name for herself on FF by being the biggest trash talker ever. Most noteably on the episode where everyone had to eat animal penises, and she was making puking/gagging sounds while everyone before her was trying to choke it down. Then, when it was her turn (with the biggest one of all - the bull pen1s), she ends up having the worst gag-reflex ever. Probably one of the most obnoxious guests ever. She even came back for a "losers" episode.

I commented to my wife after the show that I should hack off a limb or two, lose a finger or two and have some heartbreaking story about how I was molested as a kid and my invention would SO get 3 yes votes no matter how retarded it was.

The woman judge is voting entirely based on the people she sees and the harder they make her cry. Ridiculous.

The "inventor judge", on the other hand, is really subjective as well. He appears to have a really limited sense of what makes an innovative idea and what doesn't. Everytime the inventor in question appears to be like him, he's all over the invention.

The Brit and the ad agency dude at the ends of the table are on the ball though, most of the time.

I like the bathroom door holder, too. I think she should a small hook or knob on one side so that people can hang their jacket or purse on it, too. (in case the regular hook is missing, of course)

On the Ribbon
I was shocked at the behavior of the female judge. I can not believe that she was not fired, on the spot!!!!
Her actions were totally beyond belief!!!

On the topic of the ribbon for women thing... I think it would be a great idea if it's easy and quick to put on and idiot proof to take off. The fact that the thong was connected and tear-away was brilliant. It's a shame that the female judge was too much of a prude to actually give the product a thought in her head... to busy being embarassed that she is on the same show as famale nudity like she is so elite or something.

On the subject of too much commercials... this will be the downfall of tv in the future. Itunes like distrabution will win over regular tv if this stupidity continues. This is why I do other things while watching shows like this.

Agree with J, this is certainly a Tivo-Only show. I couldn't watch this live if you paid me.

The bathroom invention is great, I see it selling big time. The sports one was alright, it reminds me of those hitting things you see on TV aimed at little league where the kid can hit a ball that's tied to a tree.

My problem with the doll is that it's not really an invention...a talking doll? That's been invented. So it speaks multiple languages? I find it hard to believe that a product like that doesn't exist, but even if it doesn't, I don't see that as an invention, I see it as a basic update...and I am pretty shocked if no bi-lingual doll is on the market.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention the ribbon thing for women. Although it might not be the right thing for the show, and I still don't think it's an invention...I promise you, every straight male would love to see their women in that.
