Criminal Minds: A Real Rain
Wow, talk about an episode that makes you question your own beliefs. Hands downs, this was the
best (and most thought provoking) cases that the BAU team has handled this entire season.
The team is brought in after an NYC serial killer has claimed three victims but problems arise when no connection between the deceased is found. Is he just killing people at random with no real pre-meditation? Gideon compared him to the Zodiac Killer, who had no pattern to his murders and wasn't caught for almost thirty years. Now that's just plain ol' scary when you think about it.
Well it turns out there was a connection. All the victims had been accused of some pretty terrible crimes and all had been acquitted on shaky evidence. Our killer is a vigilante and the local news was applauding him as a folk hero, getting the job done where the NYPD had fallen short. I didn't realize it, but there's actually a term for when someone such as a child molester is murdered. They're called "public service murders." Weird, huh?
There were a lot of things I really enjoyed about this episode. We got some great background on Gideon and Hotch when they first started working together. It also seems like Gideon is finally starting to accept the mistake he made (he got a handful of agents killed in the line) and it would appear he's no longer blaming himself.
The most intriguing part of the episode was the closing montage of NYC citizens sounding off on the vigilante killer. It really made you think as people made arguments in the killer's favor. After all, he was taking the lives of some lousy people anyway. It makes you wonder. How would you feel if something like this actually happened?
On a side note, I believe Michael C. Hall (from Six Feet Under) has a new show coming out called Dexter. In the title role, he plays some sort of forensic investigator who spends his evenings killing serial killers. So that would make him a serial killer killer. I like it.
