Criminal Minds: A Real Rain

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Mar 23rd 2006 10:29AM

Criminal MindsWow, talk about an episode that makes you question your own beliefs. Hands downs, this was the best (and most thought provoking) cases that the BAU team has handled this entire season.

The team is brought in after an NYC serial killer has claimed three victims but problems arise when no connection between the deceased is found. Is he just killing people at random with no real pre-meditation? Gideon compared him to the Zodiac Killer, who had no pattern to his murders and wasn't caught for almost thirty years. Now that's just plain ol' scary when you think about it.

Well it turns out there was a connection. All the victims had been accused of some pretty terrible crimes and all had been acquitted on shaky evidence. Our killer is a vigilante and the local news was applauding him as a folk hero, getting the job done where the NYPD had fallen short. I didn't realize it, but there's actually a term for when someone such as a child molester is murdered. They're called "public service murders." Weird, huh?

There were a lot of things I really enjoyed about this episode. We got some great background on Gideon and Hotch when they first started working together. It also seems like Gideon is finally starting to accept the mistake he made (he got a handful of agents killed in the line) and it would appear he's no longer blaming himself.

The most intriguing part of the episode was the closing montage of NYC citizens sounding off on the vigilante killer. It really made you think as people made arguments in the killer's favor. After all, he was taking the lives of some lousy people anyway. It makes you wonder. How would you feel if something like this actually happened?

On a side note, I believe Michael C. Hall (from Six Feet Under) has a new show coming out called Dexter. In the title role, he plays some sort of forensic investigator who spends his evenings killing serial killers. So that would make him a serial killer killer. I like it.

does anyone look for info on songs played in the tv shows? i wrote down part of lyrics for a song i heard in criminal minds, or without a trace, or ?? i think it went like this: lightning cracks the shadows and the calm of the wind blows the leaves down your street.... forever..... but a good hard glance at what's happening now... any ideas on the name or performer for this song? THANK YOU for helping get this song out of my head and freeing up my time instead of searching endlessly....

This was a good episode plus it gets extra cred for having Joel Heyman in it(he was the 2nd interviewee at the end), Tucker from Red vs Blue

Definitely one of the best CM episodes. Several scenes reminded me of "Homicide: Life on the Streets" - I'm not saying they were derivitive, although the shooting of the priest came close. Anyway, in a show that usually reminds me of "Law and Order," that's a high compliment.

FYI: The end sequence interrviews were an almost word pertect transcript of the ending of the film "Boondock Saints" which is a black comedy about a very similar subject.

I also "believe" the song was the one I mentioned. Thanks.

I beleive the final song on last nights episode was Jeff Buckley's version on Hallelujah...a Leonard Cohen song also covered by Rufus Wainwright.

I can't wait to check out Dexter. It's based on two novels, Darkly Dreaming Dexter and Dearly Devoted Dexter, about a guy who is a forensics blood expert by day and a vigilante killer by night. It's an interesting concept. Dexter had a terribly traumatic event in his childhood, is adopted by a cop who helps him channel his anger at the event into taking out bad guys. Part of you knows this is wrong, but the character is written in such a way that you really start to root for him. Michael C. Hall should be perfect in this role.

By the way, this last episode of Criminal Minds was their best yet.

I'm for the death penalty for criminals. However, I think someone dying because he beat his wife is a bit harsh. It seems like a good idea to have a vigilante, but then you have the nuts (like the one that killed the undercover cop). All in all, I don't think it's something to be encouraged.

I can't wait til next week's show. I can't wait to see Dr. Reid in action!

I love, love Criminal Minds. It is a great show, and I love how it makes me think about it and it makes my wife's hair stand on end. I would love to get the soundtracks that they play. It seems at the end of each show they come up with the "perfect" song to conclude that week. Anyone know where I can find those songs?
