Short Lived Shows: Hack

by Richard Keller, posted Mar 27th 2006 8:54AM

Hack stars David Morse and Andre BraugherAll right, kiddies, let's continue our review of Andre Braugher's television shows in preparation for his new show, Thief, which premieres on FX laster this week. As we mentioned, after Braugher left NBC's Homicide: Life on the Street, he headed for New England and donned the role of Dr. Ben Gideon on ABC's Gideon's Crossing. While that show was a critical success it only lasted one season.

He returned to series television again in 2002, this time co-starring with David Morse (St. Elsewhere) on the CBS drama Hack. In the series Morse played Mike Olshansky, a disgraced former Philadelphia police officer who now drove a taxi while attempting to rebuild his life. Braugher played his friend and former partner, Marcellus Washington, who was still on the force.

The show was part cop drama and part Taxicab Confessions; he would talk to his fare and realize that something was amiss in their lives. If his 'Police-Sense' tingled he would involve his former partner to work the legal investigation of the matter while he used his unconventional role to find the information he needed on the hard streets of Philly.

The show lasted for two seasons. Despite being lauded by critics and fans alike, it was canceled in 2004 when CBS decided to get rid of its original Saturday night programming for, um, repeats (Brilliant!). In 2003 Braugher won a NAACP Image Award for his role on the show. As far as I know, Braugher's character did not have a cardiac episode on this show.

Well, that brings us up to date on Braugher's career up to Thief.  Here's hoping for a four-season run of the show. Hey, stop laughing! Really, I meant what I said!

I agree 'Hack' was a good show. The only reasons I can think of why it was cancelled was maybe because it wasn't set in New York City or L.A. as a location (Seems ALL too many TV shows are? Plot settings in NYC & L.A. seem to give shows an advatage being picked up by networks. Don't the TV producers realize that more people live somewhere else other than those two places & might be interested in other settings instead? Oh, I forgot... Those cities are where the TV networks are located so maybe it's a matter of home town favoritism? Go figure?) & possibly because when the 'Hack' 3rd season programming was being determined, the network gurus missed their dart board completely when they threw the 'Hack' dart... That IS how they decide which shows to schedule for each season on the networks, isn't it? ...By throwing darts? Sure seems like it based on the crappy shows they schedule & the good shows the cancel. They pay those network program people TOO much as far as I'm concerned! Any dumby could set program scheduling as badly as they do...

just some dude

Hack season 1 was great. It had a great season-long story arc with sub plots, and extremely rich character development (for a broadcast show). Hack's problem was that it resolved its first story arc fully and didn't have an equally compelling one to replace it.
