Prison Break: By the Skin and the Teeth

by Keith McDuffee, posted Mar 28th 2006 12:29AM
prison breakI think FOX made a big mistake (what else is new?) in putting this show on hiatus for months, right in the middle of its first season. If the show had continued on with relatively regularly spaced episodes, I might not be finding these past couple of weeks to be a bit lackluster. We should be on the edges of our seats right about now, especially with Lincoln supposedly about to die at the conclusion of last week. Is it just me, or are these episodes just so-so?

The conversation between C-Note and Westmoreland brought up a subject I'd wondered since Sucre was interesting in breaking out. Would these guys really head to their families once they broke out, knowing full well the authorities would likely be waiting for them there? I'm not really sure what satisfaction they'd get to have maybe a few minutes with their loved ones before they were either shot dead by the police or taken away for the rest of their lives. Honestly, unless you have one heck of a plan once you broke out, life (or a few more years) in prison seems a lot better than running for the rest of your life, possibly living in poverty on the streets, only to eventually be taken back to prison anyway. As far as I can tell, only Michael and maybe Westmoreland have some sort of plan once they get out, one that may set them up just fine.

A bit of possible foreshadowning going on with what Michael's told while at the phych ward. There's mention of using drugs to keep the inmates there in line, and I just felt like there was a little more emphasis on that tidbit than usual. Might Michael grab sme of that for use later? Seems it might be pretty easy to do so, though I'm not sure the attending guard(?) at the phych ward will let Michael slide by so easily next time.

Oh, and did you ever notice how close to the wire Michael always seems to get as far as making it to the bunk check in time? Come on guys, we were tense the first time, but t's een way too many close calls now.

Next week is definitely an episode that could make up for these past two, as it will focus on the stories behind the inmates we've come to know and how they got where they are today. T-Bag's story already looks chilling from the short scene we were treated to.

I just watched every episode back-to-back over three days: I noticed absolutely no drop-off in quality between 13 and 15 (the hiatus came after 13, right?).

Go back and watch 12-15 again without a break, you'll see the edge-of-your-seat thing is still working.

I was so upset that they put the show on hiatus, and then so excited when it finally came back; but but with these new episodes I'm starting to lose interest. THEY NEED TO BREAK OUT ALREADY.

It's just you. Last night's episode was one of the best.

I loved the scene with Sucre, Pope, and Bellick.

Bryce, I am right above Chicago, it snowed on Sunday, it was 60 degrees today. He wasn't kidding about waiting an hour for the weather to change, it's actually like that.

Something I forgot to mention in my earlier comment, I wonder if Haymacker will make another appearance.

For sure the weather is like that -- it was a beautiful 65 a few weeks ago for about three days, then near freezing temps the following two days. I woke up just the other day to snow on the ground after going the day before without a jacket outside.

You didin't even mention the wonderfully witty episode title.

Also, is anyone else extreamly botherd by the fact it was snowing? I mean, I don't live anyplace near Chicago, but does it really go from a heatwave to snow in only a couple weeks?

"Is it just me, or are these episodes just so-so?"

Well, if it were according to me, ya it's just you. The past two episodes, especially the one that started off the break from the hiatus was the best episode to date in my mind. Probably because there was no real, "follow the tattoos on Michael to get out scheme", going on. It was all about the characters. We got to see what Michael and Licoln are actually like when they are truly afraid. The character development in these two episodes have really propelled the characters to a new realm, in my opinion. I care a lot more for Licoln now, then before the hiatus. I care a lot more for all of them, and I care less for T-bag (which is probably supposed to be), than I did before the show went off the air.
Before the hiatus I was more interested in the tattoo and Michael's amazing ability to do EVERYTHING. But, after the last two episodes I'm really rooting for these guys now, not just how elaborate the escape plan can be.
