Lost: Lockdown

by Ryan j Budke, posted Mar 29th 2006 10:49PM
locke; lost; sin cityAs someone in the chat said: "Now that's some old school Lost right there". That it was, that it was. I'm going to say something and I fully expect to get  both "You're absolutely right Ryan, I feel the same way!" and "Ryan, you ignorant slut" replies-- the second season is far superior to the first. Personally, I'm a huge sci-fi geek, but Lost has won over a crowd that is much larger than your typical sci-fi show. It won an award for best drama last year, and that's what they've been playing up this year. It's all about the drama, the personal connections, the hierarchy and structure of the tribe, who depends on what and whom, and you know what? I'm loving every second of it. I want more. On with the show!Lost picked up right where we left it last week, at the tail end of Henry's super-ominous comment about setting up the trio of Sayid, Ana Lucia and Charlie in a trap. If he was an other that is. So is he? Well, it looks like we won't know for sure until next week, but currently, "all signs point to yes". See we find out Henry Gale's true identity, and he is a balloon-ateer (yea, just made that up) from Minnesota. He also happens to be a middle-aged black man and the current resident of the grave that our Henry gave directions to. So who is pretending to be Henry? Is it just a generic "if you get caught" story that all the others are instructed to use? We'll find out next week.

Being a Locke-centric episode, we also got a couple of more glances at why he has such troubles letting people in. In his past, right as he had seemed to have been getting over the hell is father put him through, his dad put him through the ringer again and destroyed the life he had built with Helen. With really the only two people in his life leaving him at the exact same instance, it's understandable to see why it only take "Henry" sticking around to get on Locke's good graces. Locke also saw something that I'm sure will be dissected over and over again for months to come-- the map on the door. I have no ideas what it means. I'm staring at it right now, and can't come up with any sound theories, so I'd love to hear yours.

One of my favorite parts about tonight's episode was the return of Jack. For most of this season he's been so wishy washy and whiney, it's gotten old real quick. In his best moments, Jack always seemed to be a half a step ahead of Sawyer (who was normally a couple steps in front of everyone else) and we saw that return to form in this episode. I like when Jack had him beat in poker and he used not only Sawyer's vanity against him, but also the knowledge that if he lost, it would only go back to the status quo. He had nothing to lose, and managed to win it all. Go Joe Jack!

All in all, a great episode in my humble opinion, and I am looking forward to this home stretch of new episodes with a great deal of excitement. Let me know what you think.

"I think I noticed a production goof, too. When everyone's spying on the card game (with Libby holding the binoculars), it looks like Locke enters the left hand side of the frame. But he couldn't have because he was impaled in the hatch."

No, it was someone else. I rewatched it. He's younger, but also bald and dirty. Here's a screenshot:

Good eye though.

My daughter pointed out that the numbers that were to be entered into the computer were on a "Post-it" on the monitor. So Locke should have told Henry to enter those numbers on the "post it".

The one thing I don't understand is why everyone has just assumed that "Henry Gale" actually entered the numbers into the computer. We didn't see him do it, we heard the sounds that the timer previously made when it reached the end of the countdown. Everyone on here has been trying to make some kind of connection between the blast doors and the shipment that was dropped, I think it's much more likely that the drop was triggered by the timer running down. The timer running down would also explain why the blacklight went on, why the blast doors went up, everything. Perhaps after the timer gets down the zero, the whole system has to do a reboot and the lights turning off and the blacklight coming on is like the BIOS screen on a computer before the OS starts loading.

In regards to a few of the other points made on here, I personally think that the CV on the map stands for civilization, which someone finally said. It could be places where people (like Danielle) had set up camps, or it could be areas which could someday be used as a camp (the beach and the caves).

I had never heard the word Dharmatel before but it's all over the map. That along with the intranet seems to imply that most if not all of the island is wired in some way. The map always contains A LOT of references to accidents and failures, which seems to imply that whatever Dharma initially had in mind for the island, things have gone wrong and plans have changed.

The Others have not sent a rescue team for non-Henry. Does that mean he is not one of them, or that he is an outcast of one of them, or that they are afraid to rescue him, or that such a rescue is in the next episodes? Let say that he is not an Other

Perhaps, as suggested before, non-Henry is Desmond's replacement...but then why does he lie about being Henry Gale? Agressively? Let say he is not Desmond's replacement.

Let's look at non-Henry. Smallish build, goofy looking, evil eyes, very very smart...I'd guess he is a scientist. (I am a scientist and I work with scientists). So could non-Henry be one of the original scientists that set up Project Dharma, on the island to check on things? Maybe see why Desmond has not done all the duties besides pushing the buttons?

This would explain how he was able to release the doors off of John's legs. The boy did something besides/in lieu of pushing the buttons.

Non-Henry is most important character going forward. I hope he does not "escape" and fall of the island like Walt and his dad.

Maybe more of the island taking away and giving him stuff involving his legs?

Just thinking out loud here:

A) The blast doors came down while the shipment was made. Not sure why. To keep people from getting crushed? To keep them from seeing where it came from?

B) The blast doors appear independent of the countdown. It'd make no sense to have the doors down and have it count all the way down, unless the countdown wasn't as important as we think.

C) An airdrop makes no sense. It would have to be insanely high to keep from being heard. Do we have much of a sense of how far the hatch is from the beach? Would it be possible to 'airdrop' supplies from the mountain?

D) Is there anyone on the Island that doesn't have a connection to at least one other person? I can't come up with one for the Tailies, but I don't think they've been around long enough to let the writers establish that.

There was a warning before the lockdown. I don't think I saw any post yet tranlating what was said over the PA before the lockdown.
